~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

Namaste all! As I sit here and compile this week's
newsletter, I find myself reflecting on the past weekend.
I did an intensive Yoga study for my teacher training
(about 15 hours which included a 2 hour Bikram class -
you yogis out there know what I've gone through :o)
then filled in to teach a Reiki First Degree class this
afternoon. Guess I don't have to tell you - I'm exhausted!
My eyes are drooping and my fingers are missing the keys.
So, if you'll forgive me, I'll be skipping my column this
weekend. Stay tuned for next week's musings and ideas!

If you'd like to be a featured columnist, send your
article to teri@reikione.com. I'll consider all
submissions, but reserve the right to reject any that
are inappropriate for this forum.

Winter: Karen asks: How important is meditation for a
Reiki practitioner? How does it help and how often should
one practice? Personally, I think meditation in some form
is crucial to a person's spiritual development and I see ReiKi
as a spiritual practice. (In fact, I've developed a set of
meditations for each level.) Not everyone can "sit," as in
Zazen or prayerful mind. There are many forms of 'moving
meditation,' like Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, dance, mindful
walking, etc. There are other forms of expressive mediation
like chanting and singing, writing with the passive hand.
There are almost too many types and ways to count. I think
part of taking responsibility as a teacher is to assist your
students in finding what works best for them, then support
them in that endeavor. Personally, I do a combination of
techniques (including water meditation - my name for a
sooooothing bath) and have a small self made ritual I use
for twice daily ReiKi sends. Also, there are times when I
will sit and recite the Principles repeatedly. I also use a
mantra developed from a translation of the symbols to still
my mind and it is a part of my meditative practices. "I am
One with All Things. In this Oneness, I heal body, mind,
and heart (or spirit). In Right Consciousness, I release
myself from (All) Attachment(s), living (or 'to live') in
the Moment of Great Shining Truth." May this be of use.

ladyleo: Thank you so very much for this wonderful
newsletter. I am new to Reiki (Level One Nov. 2001).
I so appreciate the information you provide. Especially
helpful for me was this sharing from Beth "Sometimes
the hardest thing is the faith part, just believing and trusting
that you are being a channel for healing energy." I look
forward to the newsletter and want you to know your
hard work is truly appreciated. Thank you also to all
of the readers willing to share their information.
You are great!

Helen: Comment to Julie about her 'blue lights."
Good news! According to Carl Jung the psychiatrist,
in his book, "Psychiatric Studies," p. 61. The blue
lights are "harbingers and also signs of an immense
spiritual power." and "(the blue light) ..... adapts itself
harmoniously to the most perfect mind and body." The
previous passage tells of mentally ill people who see
different lights and images. Jung wants the difference
understood between the mentally ill who see lights and
those who are just fine. Jung's autobiography, "Memories,
Dreams and Reflections," is a great help. Good newsletter!

Awen: This is Awen, Reiki level 1 practitioner, yogi and
pagan from Rio de Janeiro. I'm writing in response to
Karen's question about the importance of meditation
and to tell you that your newsletter makes my world
spin gentler. :) Meditation is the fuel to a happier and balanced Inner
Life. I'm lucky enough to have been practicing
meditation for about nine years, and I'm 21 now, so
that means half of my life. I am a living proof that
meditation takes you to step on a higher ground, and
not only creates defenses in you from disturbances,
but it shows you that disturbances are actually
illusions. In that sense, meditation makes you
concentrate more on ANY task you take, especially the
ones that involve the mind and focus. Talking about
Reiki specifically, meditation makes you calmer, more
confident and more tuned into this marvelous One
Source from which all goodness and all Real Power
comes from; to which we are reflections and channels.

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't
have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or
other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in!

~~Reiki Experience~~

Doreen, in response to Sirje's experience last week:
Reiki is a lot of things, but not to control another
person, by trying to get him to ring you. That is why
it doesn't work.

From Noelle: I have been a Reiki practitioner for a
year and I would like to let you know how Reiki has
completely changed my life.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about two years
ago. MS is an auto-immune disease where the body's
defenses attack and destroy myelin which is the substance
that surrounds nerve tissue rather like the flex around an
electric cable. If the myelin is destroyed then damage to
the underlying nerve can occur resulting in paralysis. This
debilitating disease can take almost as many different
forms as there are sufferers and the symptoms can be
just as varied. Contrary to popular belief, most MS
sufferers do not end up in a wheelchair although it is
impossible to predict exactly what path the disease
will take. In my case, I lost the use of my right hand and
suffered extreme pain and loss of sight in my left eye.
Over a period of time, Other symptoms began to develop,
the worst being extreme pain all over my body, but
especially in my hands and feet. While some of these
symptoms receded naturally as the damage to the myelin
was repaired, I was left with the extreme pain and my quality
of life was seriously reduced. I was extremely depressed
and the future looked very bleak.

Reiki completely transformed my life, to the extent that
I no longer even have to take any painkillers to control
the pain. I now treat a number of people including some
with neurological and auto-immune diseases. Reiki has
given me the strength to go on and taken me out of the
darkness and into the light. With the love and support
of my Reiki master Jeremy Browne, I will be going on
to my Reiki II in the near future. Meanwhile, I am busy
building my webpage which is about Reiki and MS. If
anyone has any questions about Reiki and MS or if they
have anything to contribute then they can email me at

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week
for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments
received will be published in the next issue.

Last week's question: came from JT: When I was
undergoing my Usui Master Level in August last year,
I was taught how to "protect" myself and the client,
when doing treatment or attunements. The protection
is done by visualising oneself being encased in a pyramid,
to be filled with pure white light flowing from the crown
to mother earth. Recently, something inside me questions
the need for this. After all, Reiki is harmless, so is it
necessary, this protection? Are there harmful guides or
negative elements that will enter your body if you do
not protect it? Or is it just one of those self-assuring acts
intended to give more peace of mind to oneself, which in
the end does nothing at all? I am just wondering what the
views and practices of Reiki Practitioners are like in this
Forum. I seek upon your advice and experience. Are
there any who have had any psychic attacks for not
protecting yourself?

Awen: Reiki requires concentration and both mind and Spirit
tuned into the Light. All kinds of visualization helps
with the process. Try to visualize a waterfall of
White Light pouring the delightful and divine Ki/Prana
on your crown chakra and you will see that the Energy
really gets inside of you and warms up your hands. Try
doing the visualizations after calming down your
breath, and breathing rhythmically and superficially.
Thank you for the space to let me add my ideas. May
the Everlasting Fire shine within you and light your way!

Parvati: usually i do not protect myself or the client
before the session. i just don't feel the need for it.
some people think that energy in general can draw
all kinds of spirits, including negative ones. this may
be possible, but i've never felt the need or had any
experience with it. so basically, you should really
follow your heart and intuition with each specific
client. if it pops into your head, do it. if you don't
feel drawn, then no need to worry.

Doreen: I always protect myself and client when
doing a reiki treatment or attunement. Yes Reiki is
harmless and can never harm another. People's
negativity could linger about. You have to remember
why are they there getting a reiki treatment. Are they
sick, emotionally injured, mentally unbalanced. After
the treatment, some of the residue can be left behind.
So cleansing and protection is very important.

Winter: ReiKi does no harm but that doesn't
necessarily mean it isn't without harm. I am
certain that any bacteria lovingly zapped by a
shot of Universal Energy might question whether
or not ReiKi is without harm. I ward and
protect my home daily in ritual and I do so for a
number of reasons. First, it's a habit I've gotten
into. I'm such a good little Tibetan Buddhist
Taoist Witch. Second, it does give me
peace of mind and to me, peace of mind IS
something. Third, the initial reason I was taught
to ground, protect and shield (back in Ceremonial
days) was explained this way. There are bad
things out there. That is a reality that is part
and parcel of living on this plane of existence.
There are also entities that aren't real bright
and don't understand what it is to have a physical
body and their curiosity about our actions can
be more frightening than harmful. If you turn on
a light in the middle of a summer night, the bugs
are gonna show up. Are bugs bad? Inherently
evil? Personally I don't think so but you may
not want to have annoying mosquitoes showing
up to nibble you. I suggest protecting and
warding just to keep the buggies at bay. And
this does not have to be an elaborate ritual
based on some arcane knowledge, complete with
clanging of cymbals, although all of that can be a
nice touch if yer into it. LOL A simple prayer, a
stick of incense, a glance at a statue of one of the
Taras, a candle, a moment of quiet. All of these
are useful to stilling the mind, setting the timbre
and providing safe space. Just my tuppence.
May this be of use.

Bonnie: I believe that each Reiki practitioner
should include in their practice what feels comfortable
to them. I use crystals when I am treating a client in
person, and I also draw the Reiki symbols over the
clients brow (third eye) and heart chakras. I mentally
ask my Guide and that of the client to be present. I
affirm that the healing be for the highest good of the
client. Non of this is *necessary*, but it is right for
me and my clients. The Pyramid of White Light is a
wonderful way of protecting oneself. I do this on a
personal basis each morning while doing chakra
balancing. Do I feel there is a necessity for doing
this before a healing? Do I feel that we are open to
psychic attack during a healing? No on both counts.
We are channels for healing energy. It comes through
us, it is not of us. The client will be allowed by his/her
guides to accept only the amount of healing energy that
they can handle. The one thing that I see as important
here is to realize that in a healing we! are helping the
client to release stress, tension and negativity. To that
end, *dragging* the released energy from the client at
the end of a session and releasing it to mother earth is
very important.

Rosemary: I am a Master Level Teacher : It is always
important to protect yourself, even at level 1, even
when meditating. Your soul is like the door of a house
wide open when we use Reiki, meditate (or even dream).
If all the doors of your house would open, anyone could
enter. Our intention only allows "invited" energies to
pour in, such as Universal Light, God's energy, angels
and so on. I use prayer before I begin Reiki, or see
white light around me.

Andrea: You are correct, Reiki is harmless. Reiki is
not the only energy out there, and not everything that
is out there is of Love & Light. Entities & others of
their ilk are always looking to find a free lunch. Reiki
(& all other energies) is visible on the other planes
and can attract undesirable attention. Speaking from
experience it is much easier (& less disruptive to your
life) to keep such things out of your space than it is to
remove them if they get in. There are many ways of
protecting yourself in addition to the pyramid technique
you were taught, you may want to experiment & find
what works best for you. I use a variety, depending on
what feels right at the time. Yes, I have been attacked
energetically, but I was not doing Reiki at the time. The
first time it was long before I had even heard of Reiki.

Diana: I have been a Reiki Master/Teacher for 3 years
and have also learned alot about The Universal Law of
Energy and other spiritual matters. If you do things in
fear, please know that you will attract those things simply
because the Universe always gives you back what you give
out. Our thoughts, emotions, words and actions are
boomerangs! There is nothing to fear unless you create
that fear for yourself. Reiki and other forms of energy
are wonderful, powerful, loving energies. And if you
surround yourself in love, let the love pour out of yourself
and be "in love" with yourself and the Universe, nothing
can interfere or will have any power over the frequency
of love! Love = healing, abundance, joy and life!
Brightest of blessings to you!

Next week's question: comes from Deb: What do
you know about or think of "animal communicators"?
I have an opportunity to attend a 4 day seminar on
awareness & communication with Jeri Ryan, Ph.D.
I currently work with horses and use natural horsemanship
techniques which require what we call "feel". Developing
"feel" is like knowing when the horse is thinking of doing
the right thing! I have also done wildlife rehabilitation in
the past. I have always thought there was a special non-
verbal communication and that I was just on the edge of
"knowing". I have now and have had some wonderful
animals in my life. Thank you for any thoughts on this
matter. I feel it is connected somehow to my discovery
of reiki last fall.

Judy was having trouble with her computer. So she called
Tony, the computer guy, over to her desk. Tony clicked a

away, Judy called after him, "So, what was wrong?"

And he replied, "It was an ID Ten T Error."

A puzzled expression ran riot over Judy's face. "An ID

He gave her a grin... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID
Ten T Error before?"

"No," replied Judy.

"Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out."
