~~Reflection~~ by Teri Moore, editor & RMT

I've been doing some reading and reflection on the
concept of the 'inner child' lately. The idea that we
possess our younger selves deep inside isn't a new
one, but it still continues to fascinate me.

I can remember once, a while back, I was visiting with a
counselor and she suggested we do an inner child
meditation so I could get in touch with the scared
little girl living in my heart. I took several deep breaths,
then was led to a quiet safe place where my child could
come out. I sat quietly, then she appeared. Me as I
looked when I was six - bobbed hair, messy bangs,
crooked smile. And, oh, I looked so small, so
vulnerable. I held out my arms to her, to pull her in
and offer comfort. Do you know what she did? She
refused! She crossed her arms, stomped her foot, and
said, "No!" Needless to say, my therapist and I were
a little confused so we let it go, deciding maybe it
wasn't the right time for this exercise.

I thought about this a lot afterward and it finally
occurred to me what the problem was - my little girl
didn't trust me! She had been promised so many things
before by me that I didn't follow through with, there
was no way she was going to make herself vulnerable
once again.

My thoughts recently have been drifting to this encounter.
As I take a closer look at the woman I've become, I face
the hard realization that I'm really not very good at
keeping the promises I make to myself. Everyone else,
I can take care of them and keep my word. Me? I might
make the decision to start exercising regularly beginning
today. Or, starting today I will eat healthier. Today I
will start spending an hour everyday working on my
novel. But you know what happens? I don't do it! Or
I might do it for a week, a month, but never does it
become a regular habit. So how can I blame my little
girl for not trusting me? I don't take care of us . . . and
the end result is that I end up feeling insecure and
betrayed and off balance because all my energy is
directed toward the promises I make to others rather
than those I make to me.

How to fix this? Well, I've also realized that if I take
just one small step at a time, I can build trust again.
The first promise I made was last August, to quit smoking.
My little girl had major doubts about this one (have to
admit, so did I). But I did it and I've stuck with it. And
I can feel the child within looking at me with a little more
respect now. In October, I made the decision to let my
loved ones live their own lives, especially when I
disagreed with what they were doing. I refused to bail
them out of trouble, forcing them to take responsibility
for their actions. And I've stuck with that one, too. It's
been harder than kicking the nicotine, I think - it goes
completely against the way I was raised. But I can feel
the self-respect growing.

I continue to make small promises, set goals and make
myself stick with them even when the habits of not
following through tug at me. I recently did the inner child
meditation again, on my own. You know what happened
this time? I held out my arms and she came to me,
crying and still a little afraid, but brimming with love, too,
that she so desperately wanted to share.

~~Reader's Corner~~

Teri: If the newsletter looks a little different this
week, it's because several of you replied to let me
know you do have problems viewing it (no word
wrap). This edition has hard returns at the end of
each line - please let me know if this works better
for you!

Also - I'm still open to receiving submissions for the
next issue of ReikiOne: The Journal of Energy Healing.
Visit http://www.reikione.com/subscribe.htm to view
submission guidelines. I'll consider all submissions
up until the end of January.

Teri (again!): I still haven't connected with the
person who submitted artwork for the next cover.
Please email me so I can get another copy!
teri@reikione.com

Laureate: "I would like to give a big Thank
You to Thomas Lee Jacobs for sharing the Reiki
Healing Technique. I have been practising it and it is
great! It does exactly what he said it would. Once again,
thank you, for this very powerful healing method! I do
advise everybody to have a go at it!"

Michelle, in response to teaching techniques
shared in last week's newsletter: I too give my
Level II journals for distant work...I also give my
Level I's "Attitude of Gratitude" Journals. The
difference is that I make the A of G journals myself
and I have Distant Journals made that are the same
color as their Level II student manuals. My Level II
cover is green, as are the Distant journals. The A of
G journals are made from those black composition books.
I buy fabric and cut it to fit the front and back and I cut
construction paper to complement the covers and glue
that to the inside. Then I write "Attitude of Gratitude
Journal" on the inside, with the date. Time consuming -
a little.... messy - yup, a little....and since I consider
myself artistically challenged, I tell my students that
this is truly a gift of love as my creative talents leave
something to be desired. :-) Sending the brightest
of blessings and Angel Hugs (())

Heidi: Once again, thank you for such a wonderful
newsletter! I look forward to it every week!!

Jeremy: I love your newsletter and I encourage
all my students to sign up for it when they take a class.

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't
have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or
other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in!

Book excerpt: 'Affirmations for the Inner Child'
by Rokelle Lerner; Health Communications Inc., 1990

"I will be gentle with the scared child within."

A child is crying. When I cannot bear the sobs, my inner
child hides in a closet, under a tree or in the attic. But
she is there, weeping for what is lost, what never was,
what ever will be.

My inner child hides, afraid to be hurt again, feeling
safe only in her hiding place. Yet alone she will find
no solace. She needs to be comforted, loved and
reassured. "You are a wonderful person." "I will take
care of you." "I'm so happy you are here, alive and growing."

Children who have been hurt are shy and afraid to trust.
Trust comes with gentle, persistent patience. So I, too,
will have gentle persistent patience with the frightened
child within me. I will encourage her to come out where
I can hold her, nurture her and give her a reason to trust.

Today I will care for myself by comforting my inner child.

~~Teaching Reiki~~
by Francine Milford, N.D.

I was never shown this, but I did create this later
on for my own students. For the Master Reiki Classes,
I have all the symbols drawn out on a posterboard and
placed on an easel (you can use an end table, etc.). It
makes it much easier for students who are practicing
the attunement process to glance over to remember
their symbols. An easel may be a good purchase for
Reiki practitioners who plan on attending fairs,
festivals, and expos. You can always use your easel
to put up a sign. It provides a wonderful backdrop
for your booth, or table. My sign usually reads,
"Free Mini Reiki Session" on it to invite the public to
"sample" the Reiki energy. It is VERY popular!

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week
for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments
received will be published in the next issue.

Last week's question: Do you suppose that there's
ever any energy left over after a Reiki session? I
mean, say your client has used as much as they can
but you're still putting the energy out there . . . .
where do you think it goes? Do you think it stays
with the client, encircling them until it's needed?
Does it disperse out into the Universe? Or, if you
believe this doesn't happen, let us know your
opinion on that as well!

Barbara: My feeling is that there is always more
energy channeled during each healing than the person
needs. Therefore, at the beginning of each session I
always ask my guides to please send any energy not
needed for this healing to Mother Earth, to assist in
her healing and also to anyone in need. Reiki is
given to us to share, and in this way I feel I honor
that gift.

Next week's question: comes from Ruth: I'm
interested in the effect of the various symbols in
one's aura. I am well aware of the purpose they
serve in the practitioner's hands and crown, but
has anyone written about or considered the effect
in the aura? I am also particularly interested in
various views of Reiki Masters on the use of the
Raku and whether it can be in the student's aura
even though it is not put in the aura or hands, but
used when disconnecting. I know that not everyone
uses this symbol, but many masters do. Your thoughts?

~~Music/Book Review~~

Quiet Places by Vinny Lee
reviewed by Teri Moore

I stumbled on this book in my local Barnes and Noble
and thought it worth sharing due to the amount of
queries I receive concerning how to set up your
home for practicing Reiki. Published by Reader's
Digest, 1998, Quiet Places contains wonderful
information for creating havens within your home,
your workplace, your garden.

Suggestions abound from using color to set mood, to
the types of sound which enhance quiet thought and
meditation, etc. Here's an excerpt from the section
titled "The Art of Repose":

+Touches of Color+

A calm environment will be based on tones from
nature's core palette, but to bring a room to life
requires touches of brilliant color, mirroring the
glorious hues of the flowers and birds that animate
the natural world.

A vase of freshly cut flowers or a bowl of spring
bulbs add temporary splashes of vivacity to a room.
Bright pillows on a sofa, an area rug, a painting, or
a piece of sculpture against a plan wall, can be
changed occasionally, perhaps to reflect the seasons.
As a more permanent feature, colored glass inset in
a door or window, whether it fills the pane or forms
a jewel-like border, comes to life when light shines
through it. The light, endowed with color, then
creates a vibrant, shifting mosaic on a floor, wall,
or other surface.

-Place crystals prisms on a sunny ledge to cause tiny
rainbows to appear on walls.

-Fix a glass shelf in front of a window to provide a
display area for colored bottles that glow when sunlight
is behind them.

Read a good book or heard some good music,
healing-wise? Write a review and I'll include it in the
newsletter. In appreciation I'll send you a ReikiOne
ScreenSaver! Email your review to
teri@reikione.com.

~~Just for Fun~~

A man came walking up to the house when he noticed his
grandfather sitting on the porch, in the rocking chair,
with nothing on from the waist down.

"Grandpa, what are you doing?" he exclaimed.
The old man looked off in the distance without
answering.

"Grandpa, what are you doing sitting out here with
nothing on below the waist?" he asked again.

The old man slowly looked at him and said, "Well, last
week I sat out here with no shirt on, and I got a stiff
neck. This is your grandma's idea."
