Notes from the Editor

Teri Moore RMT RYT

Welcome to the first issue of the ReikiOne.com Newsletter for 2005! Moving into the sixth year of publishing this newsletter, I'm compelled to take a step back and look out over the years. What began as a simple publication to bring together a small Reiki community has now grown beyond any expectations I might have had for it. Over 2300 subscribers in all parts of the world receive, read, and contribute here. I thank all of you, from my heart, for making this possible. Without your continued support, there would be no ReikiOne.com Newsletter.

I look forward to sharing with you as we continue on this wonderful journey of life and energy.

Reader's Corner

Heather: Many, many thanks for all the loving words you have shared with us throughout this year. It's so wonderful to read thoughts and experiences of Reiki from all around the globe - truly the Spirit of Reiki as we know and love it.

Rick, on an earlier Editor's Notes on Reiki: I wasn't going to comment on your previous "Thoughts" - they were nice to read. But since so many did, I thought OK, here's a historical note. (-: I wouldn't be overly concerned about what you perceive as changes to the Reiki you know. This seems to be the natural way of Usui's students and their Reiki descendants. Usui Sensei's student, Tenon-in, tells us that Sensei began to change his style of teaching while still in Kyoto in 1921, adding in the Gainen or Concepts ( what we now think of us the Precepts.) Then in Tokyo in 1923, he broke up the teachings into many levels, modeling it after the Judo system of Jigoro Kano. When his student and friend Toshihiro Eguchi moved to Tokyo, he rented the Usui training hall 2 evenings a week and began to teach a modified version of Sensei's ideas. This would have been the first real "pollution" of the method of Usui, or Usui-Do. However, Sensei approved of this. By late 1925, Eguchi's version was becoming known as Usui Teŕte and now included many Qigong like or Teno-hira hand techniques, plus Hayashi's healing guide, the Kenyoku ho cleansing technique, a ceremony to mark the transformations students attained in each class (this led to Reiju and attunements), and the system was now compressed into fewer levels. By January of 1926 the system had changed again, thanks to Admiral Ushida, and it was now known as Usui Reiki Ryoho. Sensei never practiced any of this but it didn't seem to bother his students. After his death, the
various systems - now referred to as some form of "Reiki" - continued to
change, even after Takata-sensei brought her version to Hawaii. You can
still see these variations in Japan today, and they continue to change. It
seems that many of us are simply carrying on a long standing Reiki
tradition, making Reiki our own expression of the Heart.

Thomas, on an earlier Editor's Notes on Reiki: Thank you first of all for keeping up the work on your great newsletter. The thoughts and ideas published in it are always enlightening, though I often do not find the time to read each and every letter. So I was all the more surprised to read, in your last newsletter, about the idea of 'having to keep Reiki unpolluted'. Why? Even when I was a child I found every dogma, every doctrine, everything 'set in stone' quite unbearable. And discovering Reiki three years ago - I have received my Master Attunement in April 2004 - has finally given my life the platform which I had been looking for so long and which allows me to venture freely further into my future. And therefore the thought that Reiki can only be used alone does not make sense to me at all, as Reiki evolves and changes with every day and every person I treat. So why put a limit on ourselves?

Ashok: Thank you very much for your wonderful newsletter. I felt really happy to read the suggestions from so many people for my problem("no-change" when I give Reiki - newsletter 102404). Thanks to all for your suggestions. I will surely put them into practice and share the results with you. This goes on to show that no Reiki practitioner is
alone in this vast world. He/she can share his/her
Reiki practice, get suggestions from experienced
people and also guide people new to Reiki.

Reiki Experience

Comments

Responses to last issue’s experiences:

For Joan:

Maggie Batt: I too have recently come across EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and also the TAT (Tapas Accupressure Technique). I found when I was doing the TAT pose on my husband that I felt as if my hands were like acupuncture needles going right through his head. It was amazing. By channeling Reiki, exactly where the energy meridians lie, it increased both modalities capabilities. I can imagine that an acupuncturist with Reiki would be an incredible asset. The TAT pose is used for changing mental and emotional belief systems and can be found at www.celebrationhealing.com

Annette: I have had a similar experience, where previous work with Reiki seems to have opened me much more to new modalities. In my Chi Gong classes, I experienced immediate and profound healings. The teachers said that it was probably due to being already open to the energy. Since I have started Reiki, most interventions work more quickly and deeply, even a chiropractic adjustment is now very fast and long lasting. Before Reiki, it was a bit more work to get the adjustment and it usually did not "hold" until I had gone in a few times. It just makes sense! I have a lot of information on EFT, and one day hope to dig into it. It looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing,

How did YOU find Reiki?

New Experiences

Tina-Lorraine: Here's something I have wondered for a while: should Reiki practitioners be
vegetarians? Non-alcohol drinkers? Would this be more beneficial to our
practices? Or is it a matter of purely personal preference? My Reiki master
was vegetarian, but enjoyed an occasional glass of wine. I am
semi-vegetarian, drink very lightly, but wondered what you and other readers
thought about this subject?

Up for Discussion

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it in!

Last issue's question came from Angela: Have a question i'd be very interested to have opinion on.....I am level 2, my partner is level 1. Recently I felt somewhat ungrounded and unbalanced in myself and asked my partner if I could give him a full treatment. Usually my hands feel warm and tingly and the body sensation is pleasant. However this time I could barely feel any energy coming through my hand and after a very short time my whole body felt cold (really chilled to the bone) and i could feel energy shifts as 'shudders' all over my body but the sensation wasn't very comfortable. I finished the whole treatment but didn't feel any better (very different from the usual). My partner said he could feel the energy as normal and felt warm and tingly etc. After this he gave me a treatment. As he touched my third eye and throat he had a sensation of light pain in his hands but it passed within a couple of minutes on each chakra. After a 20 minute treatment to all chakras i felt much better but we are both perplexed on these issues:

* Why did my treatment on him not work well on me?

* why did I feel cold and 'shudders'?

* why did he have the sensation of pain in his hands over some chakras?

* What can we do if this happens again?

Many thanks for an outstanding online link to this beautiful life changing energy. I will continue to watch your pages with great interest.

Maggie Batt: *Why did my treatment on him not work well on me?
You said that you felt ungrounded and in need of healing energy. It would
have been wise to have your partner give you the treatment first. Once he
obtains Level II his treatments will benefit you more of course, but I find
soulmates sort of crossover levels and can do amazing healing work on each
other regardless their Reiki levels. My husband's treatments are my
favorite as they quickly work even better than I can give Reiki to myself.
Whenever I'm blocked and can't seem to clear something out, I ask my husband
for assistance. At any rate, your energy field was depleted and when you
give Reiki in this state, you tend to deplete it more. You see, you need to
be able to transmit what your recipient is needing by having a strong, clean
aura. The worst state being when you are sick or tired. *why did I feel cold and 'shudders'? I perceive cold energy as spiritual energy vs. hot as generally physical
healing occurring. I tend to sense emotional and mental healing by feeling
their emotions and belief systems pass through me quickly. You were
probably clearing out something deep within you. You didn't say how long it
had been since your Reiki II attunement, but you are probably going through
transitions as a result of that. *Why did he have the sensation of pain in his hands over some chakras? As I mentioned above, I perceive pain coming out of the recipient's body,
then I feel the Reiki fill it back up. Pain is related to physical
symptoms, which are usually the last to manifest and have roots in emotional
and mental layers of our aura, which is what you are cleaning out after your
Reiki II attunement. *What can we do if this happens again? Don't worry so much about what the Reiki is doing while you are giving and
receiving treatments. Acknowledge its presence, notice what it is clearing
out, i.e. the root of the problem if you are able, and thank the God/Goddess
and our many spirit helpers for such a beautiful gift.

David: Part of the wonder of Reiki is that the energy passes through the giver on the way to the receiver, with both enjoying the benefits. Each person may be in a very different "place" at that time, and thus have differing needs, and consequently differing experiences and sessions. I suspect that the treatment you gave him worked just fine on you, but apparently you were in "a rough place", to begin with. It is entirely reasonable for the two parties to experience the energy differently. I have numerous examples of feeling the energy as cold while the other person felt it as warm (at the same time and place), as well as numerous other types of sensation differences. My personal view is that Reiki is a Divine gift, and as such, had Divine wisdom about what best to do, for each person, and the ability to do two (or more) differing "things" at the same time. Hence the possibility of a differing perception of the same event -- I believe you simply had differing experiences of the (same, Divine) energy. There are differing explanations of the significance of cold energy, some say it means something is being released (whereas hot means energy is being absorbed), some say cold energy is just a more powerfully energy, and some say cold energy is earth energy (entering through the feet), with warm being heavenly (entering through the crown). I favor the 2nd - it is just a more powerful healing energy. But in any case, it is just another way that Reiki can "happen" -- which is just fine. I interpret the shudders as releases. I often shudder as I release for the people I am working on. (They "let go of" something and I "experience that. I also cry for other people, and cough ferociously...). And sometime I shudder when I am being worked on (by myself or others). In your case, what was being released may remain a mystery, but apparently something fairly big "let loose".... His sensing of pain at your chakras I understand as a "reading" of the energy he sensed in you. It may have represented real pain you were having (whether consciously or not (you could have been "numbed out" or distracted with other things, or the "problem" could have been at a higher vibration than the physical body)) or it could have been an "interpretation" of the information contained in the energy -- in this case, apparently something was "out of whack" and that was perceived -- as pain. All in all, it sounds to me like you had a very good session. If it happens again, congratulate yourself on doing a lot of good (and apparently "bigger than average") work.

Gael: Angela says:....Recently I felt somewhat ungrounded and unbalanced in myself and asked my partner if I could give him a full treatment. Well, to tell the truth, when I feel that way, ungrounded and unbalanced, I ask for a Reiki treatment, not to give one. What type of grounding practises do you use? Maybe its time to try new ones or spend more time with your tried and true practises. ....this time I could barely feel any energy coming through my hand and ...my whole body felt cold (really chilled to the bone).... I finished the whole treatment but didn't feel any better (very different from the usual)..... When this happens to female students I ask them where they are in their menstrual cycle, even those in menopause and post menopausal as well.. You would be surprised by how the tides of the menstrual cycle, even after menopause can affect our perceptions of the Reiki energy. Now as to why we perceive the energy as hot or cold is an interesting subject. In my experience I often felt the Reiki variants based on Egyptian lore run "cold". My colleagues at the Spa where I do Aquatic Reiki say that this perception is most likely due to an infection that the practitioner has. Examples could include: decayed teeth, chronic sinus problems, a badly cured bronchitis, even an incipient common cold. So it would do no harm to have a revision of your body´s workings. As a Reiki practitioner, Angela, you know that we enter a superficial trance state when we work, much like that which many experience when riding in the Underground and so I would suggest that you might have reached a new deeper state of trance than you are used to, which would, of course, significantly alter the blood circulation throughout the body and effectively lower the body temperature. In any case, the key word is: perception. You know that your partner received an unimpeachable session, so Reiki flowed AS USUAL. ....My partner said he could feel the energy as normal and felt warm and tingly etc.....I personally associate "cold" energy with deep healing, but of oneself. * Why did my treatment on him not work well on me? And I ask you: Why do you think your treatment did not work well? * why did he have the sensation of pain in his hands over some chakras? A very good question. It could even be answered in terms of a forced body posture, perhaps. In your partners place, I would have moved my hands to
another area to see if the perception was the same, even placing my hands on
myself in the corresponding sites to see if there a factor there. * What can we do if this happens again? First of all, lighten up. You know that Reiki is flowing and that you are working within a Reiki context, so that gives you a wonderful chance to explore together what is happening. Try different ways of doing a session together. You might try experimenting with Scanning or byosan in your sessions. You might try dedicating more time to your habitual grounding practise, or even find ways to ground together. You might even try chakra breathing. Or, since you use chakras as an energy reference, try doing
chakra treatments standing up. Or standing against a tree. Or...I think you have a great opportunity to share and grow and I hope this message helps you in your Reiki path, Angela.

Next issue's question comes from Jack: Is there a reiki website that details using scripts for reiki requests of all types? I'm not sure what to say when I want to ask for something.

Music/Book Review

Music Reviews from Hope:

Reiki Offering CD by Shastro and Nadama - beautiful instrumental, wonderful for a Reiki healing sessions. It won the "Best Healing Album" award in 2002. I just love this music. To listen to a sample, go to www.malimba.com .

The Essense CD by Deva Premal - Although I would normally shy away from something that has words that are not in English, I have found this album to be one of the best for raising my energy. It includes the indian mantra music called Gayatri Mantra. Deva Premal has a strong, sweet, pure voice and sings the mantras wonderfully, some with male vocalist Miten. For more info go to www.mitendevapremal.com or www.whiteswanmusic.com .

Adagio Music For Healing CD by Peter Davidson- This is a good album for relaxation, Reiki or massage. Instrumentals. Find at www.livingarts.com .

Chakra Clearing CD by Doreen Virtue (the "Angel Lady") This has a morning and evening meditation on it. I use it sometimes before a Reiki session or by itself to clear and activate my chakras. Very relaxing. Can be bought seperately or there is a book with the same name that can be bought that includes the CD. Doreen's website is www.AngelTherapy.com .

Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? Write a review and I'll include it in the newsletter (and yes, you CAN review your own book). Email your review to teri@reikione.com.

Just for Fun

Two women were sitting in the doctor's waiting room comparing notes on their various disorders.

"I want a baby more than anything in the world," said the first, "but I guess it's impossible."

"I used to feel just the same way," said the second. "But then everything changed. That's why I'm here. I'm going to have a baby in three months."

"You must tell me what you did."

"I went to a faith healer."

"But I've tried that. My husband and I went to one for nearly a year and it didn't help a bit."

The other woman smiled and whispered, "Try going alone next time."
