I’ve been contemplating the process of the opening and closing of doors. You know the saying, ‘when one door closes, another opens?’ This has been my life lately. Many changes and transitions within my being, my home, my soul. Sometimes the closing isn’t what we want. It can be painful and hard to accept. Sometimes it’s expected, sometimes it’s a surprise. As I ponder these doors, I’m reminded of the Five of Cups in the Rider-Waite Tarot deck – a man is standing, face buried in his hands, crying over three cups whose contents have been spilled on the ground. Behind him are two cups, standing upright and still full. If only he would turn around, he’d discover all is not lost. I think it is this way with our lives sometimes – we end up focusing on the parts that aren’t so good, not realizing if we would simply adjust our perspective, or turn around, we’d find the new path, the opening door. Reader's Corner Annette: Thanks so much for printing the piece on spiritual activism. I have been struggling within myself recently on the wisdom of choices I am making now. I feel called to campaign for peacemakers, to raise awareness of truth among my friends and relatives. I have felt this "call to action" quite strongly. It seems that just praying for and visualizing peace is only a part of what I need to be doing. Of course, activism is not so easy. Probably 90 percent of those I reach out to are grateful for the information, but the 10 percent who are not can be quite hurtful and mean. I am frequently very surprised by the passion of ignorance, and I pray that my passion arises from wisdom and not cloaked ignorance. In this pursuit, I am very mindful to listen well to what others say, even if I disagree...I try to see their viewpoint. At a certain point, there are irreconcilable points, and we must agree to disagree. Surprisingly, some of the most strong but subtle rejection I have come across is from people who consider themselves quite "spiritual." They eschew politics, deeming it beneath their spiritual station in life. I have been trying to look at role models, and I see that Gandhi, Jesus and many others spoke out when they saw injustice. This is how I see my activism right now. People say I am focusing on the negative. I think not. I think my entire life focus is on Joy, Peace and Love, and so injustice, brutality, greed, lies and war making are just out of place, and I must voice what I see. Thanks again for giving me some encouragement, Maria: i just purchased your Reiki I manual for someone for whom i will be giving an attunement to tomorrow morning. this is my first teaching/initiating experience and i was so delighted to find your wonderful manual. it is simple, clear, concise and yet says exactly what a Reiki I student is ready to hear. thank you so much for the labor that went into creating it. Victoria: Thank you so much for your newsletter! I very much enjoy hearing from other practitioners. I am interested in communicating with Debbie, who wrote of the protection symbol that she received from a guide. I am very attracted to learn more about this symbol, and to receive her permission to use it. (ed. note: Debbie, if you send me your email I’ll forward it to Victoria – teri@reikione.com). Cynthia: Thank you to Debbie for that real-life example of how each of us can be a spark in the world. All it takes is intention! And thank you, Teri, for a great newsletter and a place to exchange with other Reiki practitioners! Alistair: I have been doing research on the Net and have now found out that Usui Sensei apparently only used 5 hand positions and they are all on the head. Apparently all of the body meridians pass through the head but I can not find out any details about these anywhere. Feet and hands - yes details are available but on the head - No! Comments Even without teaching I have had to hold Reiki for a day or more when It's interesting that in the original Reiki society in Japan (Usui Reiki Tina-Lorraine: Thanks so much for the opportunity to share our first experiences of Reiki. I have been a nurse for 30 years and have always been interested in Therapeutic Touch and helping people and have loved using both Reiki and Healing Touch on friends and patients. One evening I was with a patient who was dying. I spent a lot of time with the patient and family and kept my hands on the patient most of the time. The family called me in when they thought it was the end and I held my hand on the patient’s crown chakra as she was taking her last breaths. I guess I figured that all the energy would stop instantaneously but it didn't. Even after her heart and breathing stopped for a minute she had a whirl of energy circulating and about two or three minutes later it just stopped. I felt blessed to have witnessed this and feel it was her soul??? leaving her body???? She died of metastatic cancer and had been in a coma, so it was a blessing for her not to be in pain, and all her family was present. Has anyone else had this experience? I was just surprised that her energy didn't stop sooner. Anita: Inner respiration (energy flow) can continue long after outer respiration has ceased. It can be a few minutes, especially where someone is terminally ill or in a coma and has been in the death process for a while. Although the average seems to be about 20 minutes, inner dissolution can take days for someone who is spiritually evolved. Ideally, the soul exits through the crown chakra. (There are karmic ramifications if it exits through another chakra). I was aware of that when my father was dying of cancer. When the end was near, I had a talk with him, told him that we loved him and that it was okay to go. I put on Hans de Bach's Chakra Meditation CD for white noise and placed a pyramid of white light above his crown to help guide his soul to its best exit. I told my guides to wake me when I was needed and feel asleep. Shortly after midnight, he was still breathing and I restarted the CD. I was awakened about five hours later (sleeping through the chime of my parents' clock--and you know how hard that is). When I checked, Dad was already long gone and at peace. In the days following his passage, I used my version of the Tibetan Book of the Dead that I had written for non-Buddhists (my dad was raised Pentecostal). I would suggest reading Robert Thurman's Tibetan Book of the Dead for more information on the dissolution of the senses and the Tibetan view of the death process. It's quite fascinating. Libby: I bought the CD "Reiki" from "The Mind Body & Soul Series" from New Janet: POSITIVE ENERGY by Judith Orloff, M.D. This is a book of interest to all, but especially to those empaths, healers and others sensitive to negative energies. She offers good suggestions on how to cope, to live peacefully in a world of sensory overload. "Dr. Judith Orloff's book takes you on a wondrous journey through the mysteries of energy. A must-read for anyone who's rushed, stressed, or stopped by fear." -- Deepak Chopra. "Dr. Judith Orloff has written a brilliant, intriguing, and extremely practical book on how to embrace the energies of life in order to create wellness, wisdom, and abundance. Judith is the type of physician we all wish we had. She has broken through conventional thinking about health. I consider her to be a true visionary." -- Caroline Myss, Ph.D. Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? Reiki Experience
From Rick up there in Canuck land: I wonder if some Reiki Masters have
considered that when you give attunements using the Western styles we have
learned, we are often passing through us far more Reiki than the student
may be able to hold. I feel the energy of the 4th Reiki symbol assists
this automatically, whether invoked or not. And we do this for each
student. I find that I am holding space and energy for the room for the
entire duration of the class. Students are being "worked on" even as they
enter the class. After about 7 or 8 hours of this, your bodies (physical,
emotional, etc.) may need time to integrate this amount of flow. And the
flow will increase each time until you have fully integrated the energies
you are working with. For some this may be months, for others years. Light
Body work also requires this as we are transmitting pretty much during
entire class - sort of in the background - as we assist students to attain
the vibrational spaces we are teaching. And resonating to these Light Body
energies is pretty much like getting an attunement.
running Reiki conferences or Reiki booths at wellness shows. At the end of
each day I may experience pretty much the same tiredness. I suppose it
depends on what new energies you are working with as well. Sometimes I
find I am tired simply because I have been holding back the effects of the
energies all day, just so I can be "sober" as I teach or conduct the
seminar. I wonder if anyone has been pulled over for driving under the
influence of Reiki?
Ryoho Gakkai), the Shihan (teacher) does not give Reiju like we give
attunements. Reiki is not channeled through the Shihan to the student.
Instead the original process used by Usui Sensei is involved - something
his living students call a transformation. Somewhere along the line either
Takata-sensei or her students misunderstood, or Dr. Hayashi may have
actually changed the process. I began traditional URR Gakkai training last
December with a teacher trained by the former URR Gakkai Shihan in
Kyoto. Because of my experience with several other Japanese styles I am
now in Shihan training although it will be some time before I am permitted
to teach. The Kyoto and Osaka branches retained a lot of the original
society ways, kind of a pre-1960 version, whereas the Tokyo area branches
seemed to continually evolve. The Gakkai methods I learned from 1999 thru
2002 from Doi-sensei of Japan were those that had been part of the Tokyo
branch. In the old system the doka (student) is told that their Reiki
energy will increase continually if they bring Reiki into their life daily
through meditation, self-practice or sharing with others), and if they
continue to receive Reiju from their teacher. I suppose given our Western
styles of attunement and Reiju (like Gendai Reiju) we can add into that
list, the giving of attunements. If you are curious to know more about the
Kyoto version of Gakkai training, see my article called What is Usui Ryoho
Kai? at www.threshold.ca/reiki.
How did YOU find Reiki?
long-running dinner theatre show in Vancouver, Canada. An older actress came
into the show, and almost immediately began helping some of the boys and
girls who had physical ailments -- sore necks and backs, sprained ankles,
bad headaches, etc. She had a marvelous ability to calm and cure. As I
began to talk to her, she told me more and more about Reiki, and to cut a
long story short, gave me my first attunement. Immediately a lot of things
fell into place for me -- my personal beliefs, so different from
conventional ideas and arrived at after lots of reading, thinking and life
experiences, seemed to dovetail perfectly with the Reiki principles. And I
remembered that when my children were little, I'd lay hands on them when
they were sick and do what they called "the heat treatment". It all suddenly
made sense. Royane, my reiki master, for that is what she was, gave me my
2rd and 3rd attunements, and became a dear friend. For the time being I live in New Zealand, a country whose indigenous people,
the Maori, have great spiritual power. I'm troubled by the cold, damp houses
(it's winter here, and there's no central heating!) but the sheer physical
beauty of the landscape is inspiring. My children, now grownup, still ask me
to "beam some reiki thoughts" to them whenever they need it, and I'm happy
to oblige. Reiki for me was like coming home, like having a place to put all
those things I always believed in but never had a name for. So far I
practice only on family and friends, but I'm open to anyone who might need
me. Namaste!
New Experiences
to my friend for the first time recently and was very happy that amongst
the normal wonderful feeling of deep relaxation she experienced the same
beautiful vivid colours that i see myself. she asked that i send her
distant healing the next day. What started as a fairly normal distant
healing session quickly changed when i felt myself pulled if you will into
her spirit/lifeforce. (I was definitely not in control at this point) I can
only describe it as being surrounded by the most perfect love and was
smiling but tears were streaming down my face at the same time. The
sensation was so strong that i had to withdraw and then allow myself to be
drawn in again (I felt this was the right thing to do) she experienced a
wonderful healing session with the colours and lights again. A few days
later when we were sitting together she laid her hand my arm to cool an
insect bite i had and i immediately felt reiki/healing energy flow into me,
since then she has been able to send healing to me although she has not had
any attunements or done healing before. She only seems to be able to do this
to me. do you think i could have possibly and unconsciously attuned her
into healing. I am reiki level two (practising about 4 years) I have known
my friend for about 3 years but it is only very recently that we have become
very close friends. In fact since this we have become inseparable. I would
be very grateful for your comments.
for them, so I could help them when they were sick. Right after my Reiki
I, I went home and of course Reiki'd both the boys. One got sick the
next day (vomiting) and was better in 24 hours, the other got sick after
that (vomiting) and was better in a day as well. I rather thought there
was something hanging around and the Reiki just cleared them out. But
how often should children be given Reiki in general? I know Reiki can do
no harm, but is there such a thing as doing it too often on such little
bodies? Right now I do them whenever they're not feeling well, or if
they ask for it, and occasionally just because it's been a while since
they had it. I only stay in one position for 5-7 seconds. Any more than
that and they start to stir or pull away, whether I do it when they're
sleeping or when they're awake. How often should children be given Reiki?

Music/Book Review
World Music Limited. http://www.newworldmusic.com. This is an album of
synthesized music with bells and bird calls included. It is set up in 12
tracks of 5 minutes duration each. This is designed to let you not think
about the clock while you're working on someone, there is a short space
of silence between each track for you to change hand positions. The
first and last track have light bird calls in them, which is handy for
knowing, without looking, that you've gotten to the end. I've found this
album helpful. The music is relaxing for my client, and fairly helpful
for me. I've noticed that with only 12 tracks, if I want to do 10
positions on the front of the body and 7 on the back, I need to keep my
time to 3 minutes on each spot, which doesn't match the timing here, but
it was still a good background.
