Teri Moore RMT RYT

We have a guest columnist this week, Debbie Milam. Here’s her article on Spiritual Activism

We are living in a world where we are constantly shown, by the media, man's inhumanity toward each other through violence, terrorism, and war. Never has there been a time that our light is more needed than now. During this powerful time in history we, as a group of conscious beings, actually can shift the awareness of the planet. The soul work we are doing has prepared us perfectly for this precise moment. Our voices, actions and intentions will inspire and heal so many. No longer can we sit by and just visualize our government making conscious choices. We must combine our spiritual practices with uplifting words and positive action.

If we can do this, I believe with my whole being that we are on the brink of something truly amazing. The vision I hold is that we are a moment away from creating a world safe for our children, their children, and all generations to follow.

Some of you might be saying, How can I as one person change what is happening in our government and our world? By becoming a spiritual activist, and by being that spark to help others raise their awareness and find peace. By committing to creating peace within yourself and your family, by voting and encouraging others to vote for political leaders who value humanity, and by helping others discover their light, you set in motion the intention of positive transformation.

If one by one each of us takes personal responsibility for raising the awareness of humanity we begin to shift the global consciousness.

There is a powerful phenomenon in group behavior called reaching a critical mass. What this means is that one person begins initiating a behavior, others observe it and begin imitating the action. Then one by one others join in until enough people are behaving in the same way and the entire crowd follows: this is the critical mass.

I personally witnessed this phenomenon over the weekend when my husband and I took our children to a Marlin's game. The stadium was filled with the energy of 25,000 people, each an individual brought together for the collective purpose of enjoying an afternoon of baseball. My six-year-old daughter Riley, who is very wise and observant, was fascinated by the crowd. As she looked around with determined eyes she leaned over and said, “Mommy, do you think I can get the whole stadium to start doing the Marlins cheer?” I told her, Go for it and see what happens.

She began very quietly chanting, Lets go Marlins, then she looked around and noticed that her father, brother, and I were chanting with her. She became more confident and began cheering louder. The section behind and in front of us joined in. Within moments all 25,000 people erupted in a frenzy chanting Lets Go Marlins. My daughter beamed, knowing that she ignited a spark of inspiration and passion that spread so quickly.

The healing light within each of us is so needed by our government and world. It can be ignited by each of us at any moment, in the same way that Riley started the chant that was taken up by the whole stadium. Change always occurs with one little spark: just look at Martin Luther King, Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, Moses, Christ, and Buddha.

We can all take courage and strength from the immortal words of Mahatma Gandhi, Be that change you wish to see in the world. You never know, you might just be the spark that changes our collective consciousness to peace and integrity.

May you have the courage to speak your truth, may you find peace within, and may we all know peace on earth.

Reader's Corner

Responses to Prema’s Discussion in the newsletter before last:

Zannie Rose: Prema says she has felt tired after attunements/giving reiki treatments. I wonder if this is connected to resisting the flow of energy in some way. The morning after taught my first Reiki class I was so tired I did not want to get up to teach day 2. The morning after I taught my first Awakening the Light Body class I felt zonked as well. This is no longer the case so my assumption is that my system is now more open to the extra flow of energy available when we teach. Perhaps one approach could be to say before the session 'I allow myself to open up more and more to the constantly expanding flow of energy

Bonnie: Attunements as well as Reiki sessions are more physically strenuous than they appear. Before attunements and sessions I make sure I have sufficient sleep and I also watch my diet because of my hypoglycemia. My sessions are spaced out so that I can afford to have a rest day after attunements/sessions. Increase your water intake--whatever amount you are drinking, drink more. Unless you sense an underlining medical condition, do not be alarmed. To be a Reiki practitioner is to give. Giving can be exhausting. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your students and clients. During my Reiki One training I frightened my Master and the other students in my class when my blood-sugar level drastically dropped. For Reiki Two and Three my Master and the one other student who progressed with me were still cautious. I am experienced with the sensation; I always keep a protein bar handy on trips or day-long events. When I first began giving Reiki I was not surprised that my blood-sugar would drop at the end of a session. Often I will sit for a moment between attuning two or more students. I always sit and eat my protein bar after attunements and sessions. If I have something to say no one seems to mind I say it while sitting and eating. During a recent attunement after a long, busy day I felt my blood-sugar drop. I did not panic. I slowed my pace. Keeping a calm nature and a clear head I accomplished the attunement--without fainting :) Then I ate my protein bar. My student did not say the attunement was faulty because I changed tempo and ate afterwards. I taught him what I thought he should know, I gave myself fully to the purpose, I ate, I went to sleep early. Today I received an email from my student expressing his appreciation and how moved he was to be Reiki Two.

Elizabeth: I have spoken to many people who are very tired after doing energy work. For the most part I used to find/think it was because they were not allowing the energy to just flow through them; they were putting themselves into it. Now I find that in addition to above, the energy which flows through us can over-amp our systems. I find this to be true when the receiver needs much energy or sometimes the receiver is resisting which causes the energy to build up in the energy-worker; or - It's a good idea to create a connection - a drain if you will, so the healing energy actually flows through the receiver and doesn't get stuck and 'flow' backwards. With practice, I have learned how to hold myself/my energy aside; I always pray about the healing to be performed to make sure it is in the person's best interest - don't want to take their lesson for it will come back, usually worse. I am amazed at how many different types of healers I run into that say, 'I can take peoples pain away,' and they actually take it on themselves. They say they are good at ridding themselves of it later, but I feel that this is very dangerous. I've seen healers that don't fully clear themselves and become very ill. That's why I like Reiki - the energy flows out into the universe to be cleansed and healed. It's a good idea to ask that this is what happens to the energy. Intent.

Dawn: I have also experienced tiredness after Reiki attunements. There could be several reasons. Here are some things that caused my tiredness: Not being grounded firmly. Forgetting to become a clear and open channel of healing energy and using some of my own energy. Having an emotional attachment to results for the person in the session. Not seeing each client as 'perfect just as they are'. How have I overcome these? Some things I do: I regularly 'feed' my self spiritually so that I am very grounded. I remember constantly where the healing energy comes from and pray to be a clear and open channel for this abundant, loving energy. I separate myself from the person and ask for my own healing during the sessions so that we both are energized. I appreciate the wholeness and beauty of myself and each client no matter where they are on their journey. Teach clients to breath as though the energy comes through their crown with each breath in and have it flow right through their body so that they learn to receive energy themselves. (Some people have forgotten and they drain us). I practice these things in every session and attunement and if need be I verbalize some of these things. We need to take care of ourselves and nurture ourselves too. I have regular exchanges with other Reiki therapists including some of my students and with other therapists. I wish you well, Prema.

Lisa: 1) Tiredness after teaching - I also encountered this when I didnt follow my Reiki master's instructions & taught not during a full moon. I have no idea why it being a full moon helped, but I suspect that it is related to my energy & that I was missing something myself that the full moon could replete. For e.g. It could be related to the sacral chakra & incoherence that I still needed to heal there. Or it could be related to my 'spiritual evolution' at the time as I was still affected by the moon & the signs of the zodiac quite heavily (we eventually get to a point where we move from the 'path of the moon' to the 'path of the sun'). Since doing more work on myself I am no longer restricted to full moons to teach.
So my advice to you is
(a) continue to treat yourself & clear your own onion layers of baggage
(b) try teaching on a full moon
(c) always set aside 1/2 day before & a full day after teaching. 2) Tiredness after treating - Somehow you are still too involved in the treatment, & need to let go of your attachments to the results, so that you are only using Reiki energy & not yours. Here are a couple of hints for you that I have used in the past (eventually they become second nature) a) Set the intention before the session that you want to channel the energy that is in the highest & best interests of the client & that will help them physically, emotionally, mentally & spiritually. Thank the universe for this opportunity to help your client. Then ask your ego to go & sit in the corner & give it some games to play with - (thank it for what it does for you, but explain that it is not needed for the next hour or so). b) Breathe in the white light of the Reiki in through your crown & as you breathe out imagine filling up your whole body. Do this until you are sure you are full. This will ensure that you are using Reiki, not your own energy c) Then remember to 'take no credit & take no blame'. It is your responsibility to ensure the environment is conducive to healing & that you are healthy, but that is where your responsibility stops. Try to not have an attachment to the outcome of the treatment - just trust in the energy. d) Don’t forget to treat yourself or receive regular healing yourself - that is the biggest help that you can give your clients.

Rachel: I don't have any answer my friend but I just wanted to say that I know this from my own experiences. Once I stopped myself from fainting by sitting down and stopping the treatment I had been giving, my vision had gone and I couldn't stand. Very disturbed person on the couch and I was in a challenging period myself, maybe not so able to keep my grounding? I also get this same sense of weakness and exhaustion when loved ones are having operations and car crashes and funerals without telling me- I can pinpoint the times when they do tell me. The questions I would ask myself if I were you ; Was I asking to much of myself considering my current form? Was maybe some (emotional?) part of you touched by the healing going on, the releasing of this causing the tiredness? I don't like suggesting that we may experience anything 'negative' with Reiki, but I know for myself I do share the persons experience of the treatment energetically (pins and needles up my arm, twitching, waves of heat and cold etc.) as well as emotions- it's funny, I don't feel their sadness as mine, I see it and feel enormous empathy. Maybe there were issues touched upon in those treatments that you were not aware of and physically you are regenerating. Whatever, there is no hurry, never hurry, it can take 25 years in a Buddhist monastery to achieve some of what Reiki gives us in a weekend, it takes a while for our crazy western thinking and lifestyles to integrate that. And never fear for whatever goes strange in one treatment will go un-strange in the next! And finally are you giving yourself more than everyone else?? Because you should be, you know...especially your feet

Sarita: I am a reiki master and I have experienced this tiredness and a great feeling of being cold in the bones. I had a talk with my Master and was told this happened because I was too sensitive and was feeling the pain of my students. Slowly I have been able to train myself to become detached from the students and the tired feeling has gone. Also, what is important is that you give yourself more reiki at the hara and the root chakras and to seal your auras with the golden light before you start doing the attunements

Nilay: I would like to thank you for such a nice newsletter, I missed it. I want to thank everyone for their wonderful comments and thoughts that the share about detachment. I am in Reiki 1 for 7 months. During this time I tried IVF and had to learn how to detach. It is still hoping for your heart's desire but at the same time trusting the universe and asking for the best of one and all. While reading the articles in your latest newsletter, I felt among friends here in Istanbul. Thank you for providing this.

Elizabeth: Glad you're doing well - you put so much into this, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!! I don't always have time to read and I miss it - so glad you're still here when I get back!!

Dawn: I love the newsletter. Thanks again for the site.

Auset: thanks for all that you do with the newsletter. i have a few responses for the newsletter: Thank you to Vicki for the 'letting go' description. i am going to hang that in my Reiki studio. Thank you to Tina-Lorraine for her offering on letting go, your words spoke to my heart. Also - does anyone ever respond to the building a reiki practice submission? I have sent a few questions in but never see them in the newsletter. Are there any practitioners out there who would be willing to do a little mentoring or provide some ideas, words of encouragement?

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in!

Reiki Experience

How did YOU find Reiki?

Kim: I have had many surgeries, about 15. After the last one in Feb. 2000, I didn't bounce back like usual. In fact, things got worse. I was in pain to the point were I couldn't sit, bend over, take stairs, or ride in a car. By Oct 2000, I had to quit working completely. I had lots of tests and was eventually referred to a Pain Clinic to determine the cause. I was diagnosed with "scar neuroma". The nerves that were cut for the surgery did not grow back and connect like usual. They formed neuromas (balls or knots) and sent out constant pain signals. On top of medication, I received injections every 6 weeks in order to have 1-2 weeks of "tolerable" pain. Every 3 months I went to the ER for a deeper freezing of the nerves which gave me about 7 weeks of "tolerable" pain. I was told that this was all they could do and it would be my way of life. At only 40 years old and with 3 children, this was not acceptable. I knew of "laying on of hands" but not any other name. Laying on of hands is not in the phone book! I looked! I knew this was what I was looking for but I didn't know how to find it. I prayed for the information. After a trip to the ER for the freezing, I took my kids to Phoenix, Arizona to see their Grandparents. They took us to Sedona. (I had never heard about Sedona.) That evening I had to lay down while everyone went to dinner. When they returned, their Grandmother brought me some flyers about some healing things in the area. I knew as soon as I saw the one flyer that I needed to go there. I didn't know what Reiki was or anything else that I was reading about, but I KNEW it was what I needed. I called the lady on the flyer and she "just happened" to have an appointment for the next day. She gave me the most amazing treatment and she told me she was guided to give me Reiki 1 if I felt this was right for me. She said to sleep on it and call the next day. I knew we were leaving the next day but when I told the Grandmother about everything, she said to call and see if I could get an appointment before we left. I called, I went, and I received the gift of Reiki 1. I was concerned about going home to my conservative Pa. area that I would not be able to find another person who practised Reiki. I had an appointment with my chiropractor after the trip to Arizona. He was amazed with my condition since he expected me to be worse after the trip. He asked what I did differently. I told him about my Reiki treatment. He said he knew of Reiki as he has a client that does it. (I didn't even get a chance to look for anyone yet and here a Reiki M/T was falling in my lap!) He gave me her number and I started sessions with her which turned into classes and attunements to Reiki 2 and 3. I now sit for short periods of time. I can bend over better. I can take a limited amount of stairs. I even work several part-time days a month. Best of all, I have not been back to the Pain Clinic for any injections or freezings for almost 3 years! Just a side note to show how we know we are where we are supposed to be: My children's Grandmother who took us to Sedona and gave me the flyer for Reiki is named Mary. The Reiki M/T in Sedona who gave me Reiki 1 is named Pat. The Reiki M/T that my chiropractor told me about and who gave me Reiki 2 and 3 is named MaryPat. Thanks for letting me share my story.

Elena: My best friend mentioned it as something her aunt was doing to her. She received the first attunement and excitedly told me "It's the Force, Laney, it's the Force!" Sometime after that I met a woman named Gladys who was a master, she gave me the first attunement at a very reasonable price.. I have since gotten Reiki 2 and 3 sort of "on the fly" and only wish to got htrough a full class to get all the bells and whistles including certification so I can teach. Reiki keeps surprising me. Recently I healed my cats of kidney stones, when Iwas told repeatedly that they would probably die within days. And I have developed a new sort of remote viewing ability with my distance clients that I find invaluable and a little spooky!:)

Up for Discussion

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it in!

Last issue's question came from Asha: I have heard about putting a protective light around one's self. This is helpful not to give away one's own energy. Please advice me on how does one create this light around one's self. (ed. note: or share ways you ground and protect yourself prior to doing any energy work). And, along a similar theme, comes this question from Mary: In my Reiki I class, we were given a protection symbol. I haven't seen this symbol anywhere, and other Reikis I've met usually haven't heard of one. Has anyone here had a protection symbol?

Debbie: In response to the question about the protectionary symbol. I had this symbol give to me during a mystical encounter with the ascended masters. Each time I use it I feel divinely protected and supported. I now do this symbol every morning and it has allowed me to keep my energy very high throughout the day. It is also an extraordinary symbol to use on others as well. Here are the step to drawing the symbol: 1. Draw a cross- Symbolizes our interconnectedness with spirit. Over the cross draw an infinity sign- Symbolizes our eternal nature 3. Over the infinity sign draw a Jewish star- Symbolizes as above so below 4. Over the Jewish star draw three circles- The mind, body, and spirit 5. Coming out of the circles draw seven rays of light-Symbolizes sealing the mind, body, and spirit with light

Ashok: I know Reiki I & II and practise Reiki occasionally. As for self-protection, I am not aware of any symbols. However, I have been taught to imagine myself inside a White Pyramid just before giving Reiki. I have found this useful as I don't feel any pain or other sorts of energy transfer from clients.

.

Next issue's question comes from Mary Ann: I am an RN who has completed Reiki 1 and Healing Touch Level 2. I have been a nurse for 30 years and have always been interested in Therapeutic Touch and helping people and have loved using both Reiki and Healing Touch on friends and patients. One evening I was with a patient who was dying. I spent a lot of time with the patient and family and kept my hands on the patient most of the time. The family called me in when they thought it was the end and I held my hand on the patient’s crown chakra as she was taking her last breaths. I guess I figured that all the energy would stop instantaneously but it didn't. Even after her heart and breathing stopped for a minute she had a whirl of energy circulating and about two or three minutes later it just stopped. I felt blessed to have witnessed this and feel it was her soul??? leaving her body???? She died of metastatic cancer and had been in a coma, so it was a blessing for her not to be in pain, and all her family was present. Has anyone else had this experience? I was just surprised that her energy didn't stop sooner.

Music/Book Review

Karen: I'd like to recommend a book, 'Servers of the Divine Plan'. This is a published book, available to buy from Amazon, etc, but it is now available for download for free (all legit and above board) from the writers/creators' website - http://www.thenewcall.org/book_download.htm. Tip: I saved the file as a Word document on my PC, then printed it out 10 pages at a time - easier than reading from a computer screen! I think this is a really special book - it's not aimed at Reiki practitioners in particular, but it is for anyone who feels that they are being called to do 'more'. For me personally, I felt that my Reiki attunement was just the beginning, just a stepping-stone on my journey to understanding the why, what and how of life and I've felt a very strong pull to find out what else I should be doing! 'Servers of the Divine Plan' (and the follow up, 'The New Call', also available for free download from the website) clarified an awful lot for me: it has brought all the 'pieces' together, and has given me direction and a purpose. I hope you enjoy it, too.

And from Mary Ann: I am a yoga teacher and a reiki 2 practitioner (who really has only practices on friends, my pets and myself). I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and I am runner. For my blessed 42 birthday another spiritually minded friend gave me this lovely book called "Running the Spiritual Path" by Roger Joslin. I've been doing and teaching meditation for a good many years now. But he has some interesting suggestions I had never heard of before. I thought I would share them with you because they have been helpful to me and are intriguing.

1. Toward the one--imagine as you are running/walking, that with each step
you take you are closer to god. Your god is waiting for you at the
destination or where your vision can see. Even better imagine that for each step you take
toward god, god takes 10 steps towards you. You can even use "toward the
one" as a mantra timed with your breath or steps.

2. Meditation of the heart. Imagine that with each breath you take, the lungs
fill and surround the heart, with each exhale they retreat away from the heart.
So, in essence, you breathing is providing a physical massage for your most
important muscle, as legitimate of a massage as a masseuse would provide for
your body muscles. This massage of the heart is healing it. Each breath
melts away layers of pain, heart ache, disappointment etc. The breath gently
comforts the heart, caresses it, holds it.

3. Are you running with me? Imagine your god or spiritual guide walking or
running next to you. Mentally share thoughts/concerns, or whatever comes to
mind. But then move beyond that and just share this walk with your god.
Discuss the wonder and beauty you find along the walk/run. "Oh Jesus, what
a beautiful flower that is". Or for me this weekend it was 10 miles with the
Guru
that follow--and we shared the most beautiful sitting of a blue bird--I think it was a mountain blue bird even though the bird book says such a bird would
not be here in Michigan.

4. The Benedictine run (one I have not yet tried this one). The author
reports that the Benedictine way of life each day filled with some time for each of the following: Work, prayer, Sacred reading, and Community building. The author suggest the first 1/3 or walk/run be dedicated to sacred reading. He uses a psalm written on a piece of paper. spend a moment or two before
beginning your journey reading it, memorizing it maybe. then run with it in
your hand. Focusing on the saying, rereading it a few time along the way.
Devote the second 1/3 of the run to what you consider prayer. On the last
third of the run community build by blessing those around you, smiling at
them, sending them good wishes, speaking with them, or picking up trash.
When you are done with your run, you are ready for your "work" for the day.

Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? Write a review and I'll include it in the newsletter (and yes, you CAN review your own book). Email your review to teri@reikione.com.

WEALTH, WISDOM OR BEAUTY?

An angel appears at a faculty meeting and tells the dean that in return for his unselfish and exemplary behavior, the Lord will reward him with his choice of infinite wealth, wisdom, or beauty. Without hesitating, the dean selects infinite wisdom.

"Done!" says the angel, and disappears in a cloud of smoke and a bolt of lightning. Now, all heads turn toward the dean, who sits surrounded by a faint halo of light.

One of his colleagues whispers, "Say something." The dean sighs and says, "I should have taken the money."
