Notes from the Editor

Teri Moore RMT RYT

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is its twin brother. Kahlil Gibran

How often do we find ourselves mired in self doubt, wondering if we're doing the right thing, if we're following the right path, doing the right work? Too often, I believe. For if we would only surrender to the inner knowing we all possess, and have trust and faith in our higher power, we will come to learn that all is as it should be and we are, in truth, one with the universe.

Donna: In response to Hopes experience / Karen's comments: Along with "Light workers Way" , Doreen Virtue has a great CD: Chakra Clearing, "A Morning and Evening Meditation to Awaken Your Spiritual Power" that's a true blessing!! I recommend this CD to everyone! It's a great AM preparation to the day, and a lovely PM relaxant.

David, on last issue’s ‘Notes from the Editor:’ I'm generally familiar with the idea you discuss – it is offered from a variety of sources. I have long struggled with the idea of detaching. For me, the bottom line is, detaching means not wanting what I want. But, of course, I do want what I want. The notion of being free seems like a "consolation prize" at best, a way to "spin" not getting what we want. In the case of the monkey, he want the nuts -- and in this example, he has to choose between avoiding being captive and having what he wants. Lousy choice, it seems to me. In my case in particular, I love someone who does not love me back. I have (consciously) choosen to abandon neither hope nor love, but that leave me "holding on to" unrequited love. So if I detach I guess I would be, as the parable says, "free to love". But, I already love, it's just not getting me anywhere. Actually, before finding myself in my present quandary, I was in a relationship that had some serious limits. I did let go of that (detach?), to have nothing for a while, in the hopes of finding what I really wanted. And what came into my life was the unrequited love. I know what I want, and I want what I want. I don't see how "detaching" helps me deal with either of these -- it seems to be the opposite. At times, this whole notion of detaching seems to suggest that no one can really have what they want, so don't want anything. I guess it would then be true, we would than have all we wanted...Maybe someone can enlighten me....

Sudha, on same topic: Wonderful anecdote. I practice and have always felt the need to let go in order to be and feel free. Believe me it works. We need to detach ourselves from feelings of what others would think if we do not abide by what they feel is right. We need to go deep into our own subconscious and feel what is right or wrong and abide by it. And this inner conscious which is our guiding light can never never go wrong. Let us all follow this guiding light which is right within us.

Sandy: In September 2004 Tadao Yamaguchi will be visiting the UK on a teaching and lecture tour. He is the son of Mrs. Chiyoko Yamaguchi a student of Dr. Hayashi and co-founder of the Jikiden Reiki Institute. His mother, who passed over last year, learnt Reiki from Dr. Hayashi when she was just 17, and went on to practice it quietly all her life (not knowing how it was growing in this part of the world!) 'Jikiden' Reiki is taught as Dr. Hayashi himself taught; it's very traditional and authentic and rather different in some aspects to the Reiki we're more used to in the West, which came to us via Mrs. Takata. Up until now only a handful of people have been able to travel to Kyoto to undertake training with the Yamaguchis, but now the training is coming to the UK, it is hoped that this authentic training will be accessible by many more students. Training will be carried out in Canterbury, Cornwall, London and Sheffield, as well as lectures in each of these cities. The Shoden and Okuden (Western 1 & 2) course will run three days and cost £400. For further information or to make a booking please contact sandy@reiki-works.com.

Jan, on an earlier Discussion: Very good question. I went through this state too. The first thing I do when I get pain is ask myself & my guides if the pain is mine. If it is not, I isolate the pain and send it away. As I do this, I see it turning into white light and positive energy. The pain is gone. I also have used a sweeping motion down my body and toward the ground. This will cleanse any negative energy associated with the pain.

Reiki Experience

New Experiences

Rhonda: I am at Reiki level two. I took the classes several years ago and I am sorry to say I have used this gift very little. I was reattuned last weekend. I am skeptical about how much it can change your life, but I know everything I have heard has to be true. I want to use Reiki more for myself for selfish reasons, then when I can feel the benefits on myself I would like to help others. I want to use Reiki to be emotionally happy on a consistent basis, to be more in tune to my gut instincts, and to attract more into my life. I have not been able to meditate. I need some need of a routine to do Reiki and it not be so time consuming. I am excited about trying. I do not know where to start.

Michele: I am Reiki 3. I have been practicing Reiki for 7 years this June. At one point another Reiki practitioner told me that it seemed I hadn't had enough attunements. She said there are more attunements than just one with each level of Reiki. I was told I was attuned to Reiki yet, not how many attunements this takes. It is these types of issues that keep me guessing and feeling as if I don't really understand how the attunement process works.

Up for Discussion

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it in!

Last issue's question came from Lesley: I enjoy reading all the many queries and comments about Reiki. I have applied some ideas into my personal way of practice. I now have both levels 1 and 2 and look forward to level 3/masters. I wonder how many masters out there studied with only one teacher? My teacher studied her master level with two different teachers. I too am considering doing the same, just for knowledge sake. I enjoy learning and discussing various manipulations. For example, upon reading your newsletter, I had no previous knowledge about the reverse Cho Ku Rei used in finishing. I will incorporate this into my next session and see if I notice a difference. I seem to be extremely sensitive to others energy and have had some unusual experiences regarding long lasting-physical pain. I have discussed this with my teacher. I do not practice as often as I would like because of this. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you ever so much.

Allison: About studying with more than one Teacher: I highly recommend it! I am a Master Teacher, and have studied with six (yes, six!) different Teachers, from the extremely traditional (Dave King) to radically non-traditional (Diane Stein). Each Teacher has a fresh angle, a new "lens" through which to view Reiki. What a gift to give yourself - a history of rich and varied learning experiences! When I took my First Degree, I was under the impression that once you had a Teacher, you stick with him/her. However, a move to a different part of Canada necessitated me finding a new Teacher. Little did I know how much I would gain from that change. I loved the completely opposite points of view both of these teachers offered me. One was Usui Shiki Ryoho, another was Tera-Mai. My Third Degree was meditative and angelic, my Master level was Non-Traditional. My "post-grad" work was in uber-traditional Japanese Reiki with Dave King and Laurie Anne King. What a hoot. Having a varied background (and, therefore, varied lineages) has enriched my Reiki practice and worked Reiki muscles I never knew I had. When I'm teaching, I have the luxury of being able to draw on six very separate and magical perspectives to help me explain the material. Sticking with one Teacher all the way through is like doing your B.A. , Masters, Ph.D. and Post-Doctorate work all at one school. Crazy! Get out there and explore!

Next issue's question comes from Prema: I experienced extra ordinary tiredness on three occasions. once when I was attuning a group of four students, one by one. I could not get up for the next day. Next twice I experienced this tiredness when I was healing two persons on different occasions. Can any one think of any reason for this tiredness.

Music/Book Review

Frans and Bronwen Stiene share this excerpt from their “The Reiki Sourcebook”

Mikao Usui’s teachings are a practice in motion, which means that in each moment we capture a picture perfect shot of its truth. But there are many of these moments and therefore many truths. It all depends on what sort of camera you use, when you use it and from which angle it is photographed.

There is a truth to these teachings that can’t be negated no matter which branch you may associate yourself with. This truth can be described as belonging to the energy of the universe, or that of the earth and the heavens, the yin and the yang, the soul connection or simply the spiritual or healing energy. No matter which language you choose to describe these teachings there will always be the sense of what that truth is: Reiki is far greater than us as individuals. Our desires and needs are impotent when faced with Reiki - it renders them powerless. Our intent opens us up to accept Reiki through us. It washes us, and others, clear. No life force is unaffected by Reiki.

We practise these teachings so that we may heal inside and out, let go and be One with the universe, reconnect with the path of our inevitable enlightenment and help others. To experience this we need to know that it is also our personal awareness of Reiki that creates an even more effective technique.

Controversy abounds concerning individual teaching methods and yet we all take this energy into our lives with the intent to evolve and heal. Reiki is far greater than our concerns of time, money and power. As humans, we are challenged by ourselves every step of the way. Reiki is our magical tool, proffering us strength, calm and light. We must take what we can with gratitude and work on ourselves knowing that we can do this. We are empowered and the world can only become a more beautiful place through this knowing and the practice of Mikao Usui’s teachings.

The intent of The Reiki Sourcebook is to link together information that has been spread far and wide by time and circumstances. By capturing the results of this systematic global research, it aims to share the information and to promote and stimulate discussion in the global Reiki community. It is not necessarily about ‘new’ information but the bringing together of histories and anecdotes to create a cohesive understanding of what has happened to and been said about the teachings during the past 100 years.

It is hoped that this will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Mikao Usui, his teachings, Reiki and related practices. It is also for beginners or those who feel lost and confused by the myriad of choices that are presented to them as Reiki in today’s society.

This is an attempt to create unity rather than dissension. Unity for all who work with this wondrous energy.

On opening his new store, a man received a bouquet of flowers. He became dismayed on reading the enclosed card, that it expressed "Deepest Sympathy".

While puzzling over the message, his telephone rang. It was the florist, apologizing for having sent the wrong card.

"Oh, it's alright." said the storekeeper. "I'm a businessman and I understand how these things can happen."

"But," added the florist, "I accidentally sent your card to a funeral party."

"Well, what did it say?" ask the storekeeper.

The florist read the card, "Congratulations on your new location."
