Notes from the Editor
Teri Moore RMT RYT
I read an interesting parable the other day; some of you may already know it.

To catch a monkey, it’s said you should put nuts in a jar and set it outside. When the monkey reaches in the retrieve the treat, his hand is full and he can’t get it out of the jar. If he’d release the food, he would be free. As it is, he is attached to the idea of having the nuts so cannot free himself.

And so it is with us. When we are attached to people, places, or things, we lose our freedom. When we detach, or let go, we are free. Free to love, to be in the moment, to be at peace, to be at one with the Universe.

Reader's Corner
Loretta: Thank you everyone; I have been reading the newsletter for a couple of years and I have gotten so much from all of your sharing. I have often thought about joining in and responding to many of the things said but could not find my voice. This week when I read about the topic of protecting ourselves, I knew I really wanted to say something. -- I am also a massage therapist and I was taught to put a protective light around myself and to say a short meditation welcoming the persons energy to work thru me for their highest good but that I would not accept 'any' negative energy. I believe that this was important--especially to realize that whatever was happening, did not come from me but thru me. I had utilized and believed this for the better part of the past 10 years, until I received my level one master attunement. Part of my Reiki Master teaching was learning about a Buddhist tradition called 'Tonglen' with which you take in any negative energy and neutralize i t. I no longer feel that I have to protect myself. I have also learned that there is nothing to fear, my energy is strong, powerful and my intent is for the Highest good. A wonderful author, Stuart Wilde talks about this power in his book, "The Quickening" (and many of his other books). I believe that many things are used when we do Reiki, all that we learn, all that we are. Namaste.

Kamal, on an earlier Discussion: For Naz . . Reiki or any other energy healing has a very strong component of Love Healing. And with the Love Healing comes sharing ...... the joys, the pain, the sorrow ........ It is not at all surprising that healers often pick up the emotions of their healees. And by the way, it also happens the other way round. That is why clients walk away feeling better, balanced, etc. not only because of the healing energy they experience, but also because of the positive vibrations from the healer and from the healing room. Hence the importance of the healer being perfectly balanced at all levels, at least for the duration of the treatment, and of providing a balanced healing atmosphere. Now about protection. I personally do not feel I need to protect myself. I do experience the clients pain, and other emotions, and I take it as part of the healing process. I just do not make them 'my own'. I am aware that my feeling their pain is part of the healing process for them, and that is it. And always, all the emotions leave me when the treatment is finished and the person has left the room. It was not always like this though. I also started out learning lots of protection methods in my Reiki classes, and they were useful too, until I realised that I could control what I attract or allow to come near me, and later on, I realised that it was better to go with the flow, feel any pain, and release it later. This has led me to know not only pain and other emotions of my clients, but also some of their experiences which are then brought to the surface and released for more total healing.

Nick, on an earlier Discussion: Thank you for your newsletter. About protection. I was taught that we were protected and didn't take on anything. Well that was fine the first years but I began to understand the deeper meaning to it all. Reiki is the ultimate universal energy. What could possibly go wrong when you tap in it? What bad energy could do anything to you when you tap at the highest source of ANYTHING? If Reiki is the highest universal source, than anything below will not harm you. Surrendering yourself in the light of Reiki and letting it pass through or pass out through you is protection. Anyway, also the intent not to interfere or letting go of expectations is protection enough. When you place your gaze high into the Reiki light, there is nothing that can harm you since it is the highest source. Hopes this makes some sense.

Carol, on last issue’s editor’s notes: First, thank you for your newsletter. I really do get a lot of benefit from it. I have been teaching Reiki for only about 3 years, and I told my students the same thing. I have some who have had trouble with the concept, and some who say that all they have to do is start thinking about Reiki and their hands get hot. I never had to worry about detachment and not trying to direct the Reiki flow, because my mind wanders all over the place anyway, and my hands just seem to go wherever they are needed. But, what I really wanted to tell you is that, while talking to a new Reiki person, not one of my students, she said that one of her clients asked what she thought about when she was giving Reiki. She replied, "What do you think about when you are pumping gas?" I liked that a lot and now share that with my students and other Reiki people. Keep up the good work.

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in!

Reiki Experience
New Experiences
Evelyne: I have recently been attuned to Reiki (two months ago) and when practicing do not feel any hot, cold or tingling sensations at all. I only feel the muscles of my palm twitching. At the time I was not sure how effective my attunements had been (when compared with a friend, her lasted some 20 minutes and mine only 3 to 4). I am worried that I may be channeling some energy but not necessarily a good one. It might be because I am only a novice but I am very worried and would welcome some ideas on the matter.

Jan: I am a Reiki Master but also study many other healing vibrations. Early in my work I found a way to get past the headaches I would get. If you put your left hand on the main spot of pain and aim the right hand away from you body. Using your imagination, as you take a large, deep breath in, see the pain going into your left hand. As you let the air out, see the pain going up your arm across your shoulders, down you right arm and out the right hand. As it leaves your right hand, see the energy turn into white light and surround you. You can also put your right hand on one of your Chakras. When I use this, I get a burst of energy through my whole body. I have used this many times on myself and on others and it always works for me. The way it was explained to me is that the headaches are caused by excessive energy building up in your head or your Third Eye Chakra. If you channel the energy back into your body, you are just redistributing it to where you may nee d it more. Many Blessings to you and continue to do the work you are called to do.

Glen: I'm a Reiki II "amateur" (ie, I don't have a Reiki "practice"). Next month (June 5th) I will be hopefully receiving my Level III attunement from Master Rand in the UK. On the topic of sensations, I normally feel tingling as if my hands were going to sleep when the person is receiving Reiki either in person or at a distance. I may have only given one or two treatments using the standard hand positions. When sending to my office mates, I typically place my hands on their shoulders/base of neck. Tends to work well on their headaches & backaches. Other times I place my hands where they are hurting. What's interesting is that I don't seem to receive Reiki that well myself-- I always have to resort to the Advil! I originally learned Reiki to help my [now deceased] wife with her chronic pain and other illnesses; sometimes it would help, other times not. One day when visiting the cemetery I was thinking out loud that I wished the Reiki had helped her more. My hands were in my pockets since it was cold out, but I began to feel the same tingling as if sending Reiki. It was a wonderful experience, as if it was her way of saying, "I know. I love you."

Response to Hope’s experience
Karen: In answer to Hope's new experience on channeling and psychic abilities. Congratulations, Hope, on acknowledging your special abilities. We are all psychic - every one of us - but unfortunately, we tend to refuse to accept this 'gift' and work at developing it. I think the times are changing, though, and we're starting to stir from the deep sleep, as it were!! Anyway, in answer to your question, Hope, it sounds to me like your chakras are not 'closed' as you suggest, but just blocked. Your chakras are supposed to be of equal size, strong and healthy - if you are starting to open up to new experiences and vibrations, it could be that your crown chakra and third eye chakras are working overtime and need some extra attention. Also, as you probably already know, your root chakra needs to be clear and strong, especially when channeling, as it is important for grounding. It sounds like there's too much going on 'up top' with you, hence the headaches and fatigue! I feel t hat you need to work on clearing these blockages, either by yourself with daily visualisation, or with the help of another healer (or both). Could I recommend an excellent book that I've just read, Hope, that I think may be appropriate for you at this time? It explains step by step how to do simple, but very effective, daily chakra clearing, together with how to handle and understand your newly awakened channeling/psychic abilities: The book is called 'The Lightworker's Way', written by Doreen Virtue. Available from Amazon.com. I hope this helps.

Response to Marion’s earlier experience about cold hands
Rick: I finally found the reference to cold energy that I was looking for. I should explain that I too have had many experiences with Reiki turning cold, even freezing, from my hands - as have many of my students. It seemed to have begun in the summer of 1999 while attending a healing class in a non-Reiki discipline I suddenly received an extremely strong energy from one of my Guides. It was an energy I had tried to run before on my own, but could not, due to the strength. Suddenly it was coursing through me as I had opened up to any higher energy other than Reiki. I began to shiver, even though it was quite warm outside and in the room. As I held my hands about 6 inches away - front and back - from my partner who was seated, she too began to shiver saying it was very cold - although she said it was very good and didn't want me to stop. The following year I allowed my Reiki to expand at the urging of my Guides (for 4 years I was teaching Tera-Mai Reiki), and I realised I couldn't call it Tera-Mai Reiki anymore - it would be too confusing - so I termed it Threshold Reiki. My first student afterwards was taking Reiki 3 and he became very concerned that the energy would afterwards often run very cold. It took a few weeks for this to integrate and then it would switch as needed - hot, warm or cold. This became quite common with Threshold Reiki, but occasionally I run into other Reiki practitioners of different schools who too say their energy will run cold at times. (By the way, there are ways to make it run hot again.)

Then one day I was reading a Qi Gong book written by the student of a local master - Grand Master Peng Jiu Ling - with whom I had received a powerful treatment in the summer of 1999. I had also attuned him at this time but I felt he could hold far more Reiki than I could actually flow at that time. Here are the paragraphs from the book Shaolin Nei Jin Qi Gong by Peter Fenton (1996, Samuel Weiser Inc.) that seemed to offer some explanation.

"In terms of how practitioners use Qi for healing purposes, three general categories can be presented. Yang or hot Qi, Yin or cold Qi, and Spiral or penetrative Qi. Yang Qi can be used to treat most ailments but Yin Qi is far superior for certain problems, such as twisted necks, sprains, fevers, and so on. It is inadvisable to treat a Yin problem with Yin Qi, as this might compound the difficulty. At this level of practice, exercises to cultivate cold Qi are not given, so the possibility of emitting cold Qi will not occur. Spiral Qi has a great ability to penetrate living tissues and it can be used to remove difficult blockages in the channels. It is only by learning advanced forms of Qi Gong that you will be able to emit either Spiral or cold Qi. Spiral Qi, by the way, can be emitted to a distance of about 16 feet.

"If you notice a cold area in the body, particularly around the soles of the feet, during practice, or when treating others, it is an indication that the Yin Qi is starting to move. This is a good sign because it means that it is now easier for hot Qi to move into the afflicted area. Noticing these kinds of subtle changes suggests that you are developing the ability to distinguish among the different forms of Qi, and that you are able to actually move it through the body."

I found the references to Spiral Qi interesting - this sounds very much like the focused Reiki that can result with the use of the first symbol. The cold energy - actually a strong cool breeze sensation - emitting from the feet (and knees) is also something that I observe in all Threshold Reiki treatments, as do my students. This may actually be a common Reiki phenomenon. The next time you give a treatment, check out the breeze coming from the soles. I tease students that they are just passing wind at their feet.

Up for Discussion
This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it in!

Last issue's question came from Michael: When I learned Reiki II my teacher told me to send SHK to my car and the other drivers so that we might co-exist on the highway in perfect harmony. How else do your readers use Reiki in situations "other than healing"?

Aaron: In response to Michael's request for 'novel' uses for the symbols. Here are some I have tried and continue to use frequently: * stir your food while cooking, tracing symbol 1 and mentally saying the mantra; * I'm a secondary school teacher, visualise the 2nd symbol and mentally say the mantra over the classroom door as the little darlings enter the room (I've used a similar technique with 'moody' colleagues - it's extremely interesting to see what happens when someone walks through a 6 foot high symbol 4); * when watering the garden, I move the spray nozzle in a symbol 1 pattern. For what it's worth, everyone loves my cooking (I do nothing special), my students are calm (even when the rest of the school is going crazy) and I grow a beautiful garden (which I spend all of about 5 minutes in each week).

Kamal: I am a teacher. I have used SHK to bring mental clarity to children before their tests and Exams. I visualise it on their fore heads. And they almost always do better. I also visualise lots of SHKs in the exam rooms of my school children for the same purpose. I know of others who use the symbols as a protection for their house when they are away for holidays etc. And some of my friends claim that they have found lost keys by simply visualisng the keys and drawing all the symbols over them!

Linda: I use Reiki - CKR- to protect my car at night, to secure a parking space!!... try it... to protect my daughter when she is out at night, to calm an atmosphere at home!! etc etc.. whether its the symbols or my intent I don't know but I do know it works!!!

Karen: Great question, Michael - I'm really interested to see the responses to this one! For my part, I tend to use the CKR symbol quite a lot in visualisations. A few years ago, we had a real problem here in the UK with Foot and Mouth disease - many, many farms were affected, and thousands of poor animals were destroyed. It was a terrible time, with lots of bad energy around....Anyway, I decided to send out some Reiki to the situation. This meant that as a passenger in the car, every field I passed, I visualised the CKR symbol, really large in the field, followed by a blanket of protecting, white light. The other thing that I did recently, was whilst flying (in a plane!) I looked out of the window and saw the world passing beneath me - looking so small, and much more 'manageable', and thought I'd send Reiki.....I visualised CKR symbols, all bright and shiny, falling from the plane to the ground as we flew overhead - a sort of 'lightworker rescue package'! I know this sound s barmy, but it felt like a good thing to do! (and it passed a four-hour flight along nicely!) Thanks again for the question, Michael.

Next issue's question comes from Lesley: I enjoy reading all the many queries and comments about Reiki. I have applied some ideas into my personal way of practice. I now have both levels 1 and 2 and look forward to level 3/masters. I wonder how many masters out there studied with only one teacher? My teacher studied her master level with two different teachers. I too am considering doing the same, just for knowledge sake. I enjoy learning and discussing various manipulations. For example, upon reading your newsletter, I had no previous knowledge about the reverse Cho Ku Rei used in finishing. I will incorporate this into my next session and see if I notice a difference. I seem to be extremely sensitive to others energy and have had some unusual experiences regarding long lasting-physical pain. I have discussed this with my teacher. I do not practice as often as I would like because of this. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you ever so much.

Music/Book Review
Nina: I would just like to recommend a little pocket book - a snip at £3.99 (sorry I don't know the dollar price). It's called 'Reiki' and it's written by Chantal Dupont. It literally is a pocket book about A6 size I think and it explains in simple, loving terms the five principles, what reiki is, how it works and goes on to explain a little about chakras too. I have found it to be a wonderful inspirational book, the sort of book when you're having a hard time in work you can pick it up in your dinner half hour / hour and find some comfort and solace from. And what's more the size of it means you can carry it anywhere. I would recommend it particularly to people who have just started out on their Reiki journey or people who don't know about reiki and are curious to find out more about it. It's small, compact, doesn't cost the earth and has simple explanations that even I can understand!

Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? Write a review and I'll include it in the newsletter (and yes, you CAN review your own book). Email your review to teri@reikione.com.
