Notes from the Editor

Teri Moore RMT RYT

Working in the yard today, I had to stop several times to let bunnies get out of the way of my lawn mower, to shoo geese away from the fence, to watch ducks waddle by (wondering what is it about ducks that make them so wrong on land?).

The spring flowers are in bloom and the summer flowers are sending green leaves up through the mulch to connect with the sun. And as I work, I think of the Universe and our connection to it and all things. I ponder the cycle of life . . . how often we are faced with beginnings . . . and endings. I feel my heart tug . . . and then the Universe reminds me this IS life. I shift my attention back to the moment, reminding myself I can only live in today, that tomorrow will take care of itself . . . and I go chase another bunny. >:o}

Reader's Corner

Teri: Recent updates at ReikiOne.com! Several of you have asked for colored tees at the online Reiki Store - well, now we have them! Cafepress.com (where the clothing and accessory store is located) has added yellow, pink, and bright green to their standard white and gray. I've also added several new designs. You can check them out at http://www.cafeshops.com/reikionep. AND they have dog tee shirts now! Also, I've been testing a new message center format - please visit http://www.reikione.com/msgctr and register your vote at the opinion poll in the General Chat section!

Gina: On Reiki/Pregnancy: I missed the last discussion on Reiki and pregnancy, but wanted to add my own experience. I was already a Reiki III when I became pregnant with my second child...9 years after my first. I had had a miscarriage a few months earlier and was at a group Reiki healing at my Reiki Master's studio when I had a very special experience. I had been hoping for months to get pregnant again to no avail. I felt that Reiki healing would truly help, not only my mind and body, but my spirit. As I was lying there receiving my healing, one of the women scanned my belly area and said "You are pregnant with life". AT that time, she thought the message was given to her was figurative, not literal. A few weeks later, I found out that I was pregnant and, at the time of the Reiki treatment when the woman told me her message, I was only a day or two pregnant! Amazing! Later on in my seventh month, I went to take the Reiki Master class and felt my baby kicking happily throughout the entire attunement. He was born a huge 10 pounds, 6 ounces... a big surprise from my first little 6 pound, 11 ounce baby. My Reiki Master created the most beautiful Reiki Baby Blessing ceremony for him when he was 2 months old, where he was fortunate to receive 3 Reiki "Godmothers" to watch over him and send him Reiki whenever needed. Today, Baby Ben is the happiest, jolliest, and mostly contented baby I've known. Everyone comments on this. The power of Reiki never ceases to amaze me!

Teri: I tested this new color format in the last issue and asked for feedback - here's what some of you had to say! And thanks much for your comments.

Olga: I personally love it! It is so much easier to read and so much more manageable...I am a Reiki Master Teacher, and i maintain a list of the 100 or students i have trained...I regularly forward your newsletter to my list. I know they find it both useful and informative...Thanks for doing this!

Bonnie: Being a newsletter editor myself, I know how you feel! This is an excellent way to handle the issue - the newsletter turned out very, very well!

Caroline: I think the new look is great, refreshing, easy on the eyes. As always, I enjoyed reading it.

Roberta: Excellent idea! Definitely helped to define the areas. Keep up the great work.

Karyn: the newsletter looks great, and it's much easier to read. Good job! It's easier to tell where one subject stops and another one starts. Thanks again for all your hard work on the newsletter. It is an excellent forum and I really appreciate it.

Judy: I like the newsletter with the color very much. It did indeed make it much easier to read. I love the newsletter, it is always a pleasure to read.

Heather: THANK YOU! For a long time I have noticed that the lengthy responses and such make this newsletter hard to read and kind of a turnoff to read and therefore less effective. These new blocks of color are great!

Gina: I LOVED your new format! Every topic was truly interesting and informative...I like the way you separated each section and added links between them....great job!

Bonnie: I am sorry to say, your new format is hard to read....:-(.....perhaps you could change it to a color suited for easier reading. Thanks for a great newsletter!!!!!

Heidi: I love it! Please keep it!

Morgan: Really love what you have done. Much cleaner and easier to read. Good going as always.

Deb: Teri, awesome! I really like the new format. It makes what was always a delight even more special.

Taza: Love the new format! Very nice job. Appreciate you much.

Michele: The new format is easier to read but IMPOSSIBLE to copy. I always copy the parts that are of interest for me and this way, I have hundreds of files about many reiki topics. I have not been able to copy the 2 parts I wanted to keep this week. I had to go to the archives and, on your website, I was able to copy the texts I wanted to keep. This is not as practical as it was before.

LaDonna: The new format is great - The color blocks add a good dimension. Thanks for all the great information.

Lynne: I'd like to add another reply to the person who was using cho-ku-rei reversed for closing down reiki energy - I was taught that if you drew one the right way and then reversed it, it could increase reiki further. Which it does appear to. Which just goes to show that its not really the symbols so much as you intent that is important. If the symbols work at all its only because thousands of people believe that they do and
have empowered them.

Mads, on the CKR pendant she ordered at ReikiOne: Received my pendant this morning and it is gorgeous!

Kari: I recently received (you ship SO quickly) your BEAUTIFUL little CKR pendant, and I'm writing to tell you that it greatly exceeds my
expectations. First, it is SO pretty! Prettier than the photo, I think. Second, it feels VIBRANT with energy! I can feel your positive intent coming RIGHT off the piece. I haven't taken it off, since I received it.

J, on an earlier editor's column regarding alcoholism/alanon/recovery/reiki: I would just like to say that I also grew up with a family member who is alcoholic. I agree with the comment about learning at an early age to be the caregiver of someone much older than you. I still care for this family member even though I have reached adulthood. My person is in recovery though and has been for many years. I care for this person on a different level now being that this person has a lot of health issues. I am grateful that this person sought help thru AA and has done a lot work in the direction of recovery. Anyhow, in growing up with this person and now taking care of this person once again, I feel that I am learning a lot about being a healer. I did try Alanon for a little while and I would recommend it to anyone. I felt though that Alanon's teachings were pretty much the same as the teachings of the spiritual books that I have read. I decided that I would just keep reading the books that have been helping me and not go to Alanon since they were pretty much the same thing. I also feel that thru Reiki, spiritual reading, and spiritual practices I have become very comfortable with who and what I am. I think being that I was in a position at an early age to care for someone else besides myself, I was kinda cheated that I did not get to explore who I am at that time. Once I grew up and went out on my own, I discovered who I am mainly by reading spiritual books and using their practices. So I believe knowledge is power. Reiki is a tool I have used to gain more knowledge about myself and how by healing yourself, you become strong and then can help others as I try to do with my family member in recovery. I am grateful for the knowledge and power gained by the relationship I have with my family member.

Lynne, on Reiki & Religion: I wanted to let the readers know that according to a very well respected Physiology & Neurology tutor at my osteopathic college, there could be scientific reasons why energy based healing such as reiki or Acupuncture etc work. I though this might be useful for those struggling with the reiki and religion topic, as in its scientific. We have been examining cell structure and the matter between cells of the body, part of this 'extra cellular matrix' contains something called GAGs (proteoglycan complexes for the scientists among you), these GAGs have a high negative charge and attract water (giving our body its compressive strength). Without going into immense detail, this structure causes the existence of and electrical current, and at 90 degrees to that a magnetic field. Our tutor suggests that even the touch of someone with a healthier charge in their own body could improve the charge frequency of the patient, and manipulating current through meridians and chakras may increase the healing potential. (This may also explain why Reiki is not recommended when the healer is ill).

Gina: Reiki Practitioner Listing: Teri, I think it is amazingly generous of you to let Reiki practitioners advertise and get themselves on your list for free. Advertising is so expensive now and you never know if it will be seen by people...or the people you want to see it! Having your user-friendly website offer so many tools to advance the awareness of Reiki is something to be very proud of. I am spreading the word of ReikiOne.com!

Tara: I thank you for being the "hub" that so many people can access and be heard. I have written to you before regarding the AIDS volunteering that I do in which we use Reiki and educate about Reiki to assist themselves. I have come back yet again from a weekend camp retreat and I was so glad to see this letter sitting in the in box. You newsletter is the one place that I can immerse myself in Reiki. It is a place that I can fall into as I read the words and questions so that I remember what in the heck I am doing on the planet. Often times after a camp so much healing has gone on that I feel out of sorts. You and your newsletter have helped me get sorted!

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! ="mailto:teri@reikione.com">Send them in!

Reiki Experience

New Experiences

Norman: After reading your last newsletter, I reviewed Richard Rivard's website. Richard indicated that he posted the Reiki symbols on his website freely. I, like most Reiki practitioners, have an interest in the symbols since we come from different lineages. Initially, when I came across Dianne Stein's book [Essential Reiki] and found that she published the symbol, I was shocked as I was sworn to secrecy when I took my Reiki training. I never really resolved how I felt about her publishing the symbols so I was not surprised when I read that Richard Rivard published the symbols on his website. Anyway, upon further review of the Master symbol I found that the symbol Rivard displayed was different than the symbol [and attunement] I received when I took my Master's training. Not only did I find the symbol different, but when I invoked the symbol, I find a lot more energy coming from the invocation. Now my question is this. Do I need to get an attunement with this symbol for the full compliment or is just using it enough? I would be interested in other peoples feelings and responses. Thanks. (ed. note: Rick - if you're out there and would like to respond, let me know! of course, anyone else is free to respond as well :o)

Gail: I have recently begun to use Reiki on two young boys who are both Bipolar. One of these young men, who is 11 years old, also has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He is trying hard not to use meds and the OCD is really a problem for him. (Normally, if they give him meds for his Bipolar, the meds increase the OCD.) We are giving this young man Reiki every other day. The treatments last about one half hour and he falls asleep within the first 5-10 minutes. He is excited about the results and looks forward to the treatments. The second young man is 14 and receives Reiki way more sporadically as he is incarcerated in a children's home and can only come home for visits on weekends. I wonder if any of your readers have experience treating these disorders. I would appreciate any input/suggestions.

Marion: my hands get hot while working with Reiki & I assumed that was common. My most recent student's hands get ice cold while she is working with Reiki. When she worked on me, her hands were icy during the head positions, but warmed up on the body positions. I have no answers when she asks me why her hands get so cold. Also, I met a Reiki master this weekend who's hands get icy cold immediately after a Reiki session. They almost looked frostbitten! Any ideas?

Responses to Barbara's experience regarding EFT:

Char: I am a Reiki Master and wanted to respond to Barbara question about the EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) I have been using both together for a few month now and I have had some great healings with it. I have used it with a friend going thru a divorce ( great emotional pain ) after tapping a few rounds I would do a Reiki treatment and she would feel like her old self again. I have used it on a friend with cancer the tapping got her pain level to a zero and then the Reiki was like a nice warm blanket, that just made her feel safe and warm all over. I think there is no wrong way to heal. The intent is the most important thing. I love EFT I have seen great things happen with it. I love Reiki I have seen miracle happen with it. What a blessing to put the two together.

Teri: I would like to speak to Barbara about combining EFT and Reiki. I am just learning EFT, and previous to reading your comments in this newsletter, I was thinking how Reiki could benefit the use of EFT. So Barbara if you would like to speak more about this with me you can email me at ctnels@montana.com . I am interested to know if you have had any luck with EFT. And certainly, I think, Reiki could help.

Richard: My wife and I (both RMT) have been combining Emotional Freedom Technique and Reiki with our clients here in the UK for more than 2 years and have introduced it to over100 of our students. EFT can be successful in treating everything from a headache to severe emotional and/or physical trauma. With the help of Gary Craig's excellent website www.emofree.com and his training videos, we have been fortunate in empowering so many people to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. By following the EFT session with Reiki the client can experience immediate relief and the total sense of peace and relaxation that Reiki brings. So, Barbara, I have no hesitation in recommending that you pass on the benefits of EFT that you have already experienced to your clients and students. As regards certification I would gently suggest that a certificate does not make a practitioner. As you probably know, everything you need is on Gary's website. As in all things, be guided by your intuition when to introduce EFT and go for it! It's interesting to note that I first came across a reference to EFT in this very newsletter and that started the whole process - thanks Teri!

Betty Lou: Barbara,it sounds like you are trying too hard.REIKI is GOD'S energy we are only the channels.Once you receive an attunement you are attuned for life, as you use it gets stronger but even if you never intentually use REIKI after the attunement it is on.REIKI goes where it is needed you don't even have to think about it. REIKI can never do harm. My suggestion to you is RELAX enjoy your gift and share it with the universe any way you can think of.I send you REIKI Blessings.

Helen: Hello Barbara, yes, I have been using EFT for three years now on myself and with clients and I love it! In fact, for me, Reiki and EFT have been my life savers. I have completed advanced training with David Lake and Steve Wells in Australia (see www.eftdownunder.com) and often offer EFT in a Reiki session if the client has a particular emotional issue they would like addressed. We usually "tap" for about 20 minutes then finish the session with Reiki. It works really well. For more info about EFT visit www.emofree.com Hope this helps.

Up for Discussion

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it in!

Last week's question came from Adrienne: I am new to reiki, I only received my first attunement about nine months ago, so every reiki experience brings forth something new. My question is, when I am conducting a session and I feel a particular energy being expended rom whatever area I am working on, is that to be taken as an area that needs to be worked on or an area that is in a good place? Is the energy I am feeling negative or positive? What about the energy that the "recipient" feels during a session? Does the energy represent an area that is in dis-ease or at ease? Any explanation that you could give would be gratefully appreciated.

Teri: I didn't receive any responses to Adrienne's question. If you'd still like to respond, please feel free to do so!

Next issue's question comes from Naz: I wondered what people's thoughts are on protection during treatment. Do you have to make the intention to protect yourself and everything around you, or does the reiki do that automatically. If you don't make an atual intention, is it possible that you can end up picking up certain symptoms of the people you treat? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Growing your Reiki Practice

Marketing Reiki

From Francine Milford, Reiki Center of Venice, (941)-544-0076, www.ReikiSystems.com

When I opened my new office in Venice I purchased two acrylic signages. In the one I put in the Reiki principles which I had done in calligraphy on nicely decorated paper and in the other I put in brochures of upcoming classes. People pass the office all the time, even when you are not available to meet and greet them. This way, everyone who takes a flier is a potential future customer and everyone who reads the Reiki principle will develop a pleasant perspective of you, before they meet you. The two signages together were only $10 at Office Depot. This has become a wonderful way to track potential customers as you watch the brochures disappear.

Music/Book Review

Jim: I am a Reiki Master / Intuitive and I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I just recently created my website (www.BlueTranquility.com) and have released an instrumental music CD called Crystal Blue Tranquility (www.CDBaby.com/JimBlue). I created it specifically for Reiki, yoga, relaxation, meditation, massage, and energy work. I have been a professional musician and composer for nearly 4 decades. I've always had a dream of creating my own CD but was never able to make it happen until Reiki changed my life. I've done hundreds of Reiki sessions and the CDs I've used for background music were nice but I kept hearing that little voice telling me to create my own. So I did.

I composed, nurtured, and recorded my music for 14 months. I poured my heart into each and every inspired song. I was determined to create a CD that was perfect for Reiki, relaxation, meditation, and massage...... a beautiful tapestry of soothing melodies and captivating soundscapes. I've had wonderful reviews from Reiki masters, reflexologists, and massage therapists just to name a few.

Please give Crystal Blue Tranquility a listen. I think you'll be glad you did. You can listen to it and read many of my reviews at www.CDbaby.com/JimBlue.

Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? Write a review and I'll include it in the newsletter (and yes, you CAN review your own book). Email your review to teri@reikione.com.

Just for Fun

Carrying her newborn in her arms, Joan got on the bus. The driver said, "That's the ugliest baby I've ever seen!" Joan slammed her money into the fare box and took a seat at the rear of the bus.

The man next to her asked what was wrong. "The bus driver was rude to me!" she complained.

"That's outrageous," said the man. "He shouldn't be insulting passengers."

"I think I'll go up there and give him a piece of my mind," Joan said.

"Good idea," agreed the man. "I'll hold your monkey for you."
