Archived issues of this newsletter are available for viewing at http://www.reikione.com/cgi-bin/news.cgi . If there's one change I've noticed since starting my Reiki practice, it's the shift in creativity I've experienced. New ideas bounce around my brain so often, I've taken to keeping a journal of them - everything from Goddess Figures/Dolls to Angel Paintings to Landscaping to Silver & Beadwork. Nothing is safe from this creative surge which Reiki has helped to bring about. Don't get me wrong, I've always made things, since I was a child. What's changed is the level of sophistication and detail, the abundance of ideas, the ability to see something where there is nothing. Most recently, I was helping a friend find a pattern for a zafu - you know, those round cushions used for yoga and/or meditation. While in the process of looking at how one was put together, I immediately saw in my mind's eye an entirely new item, complete, with the zafu as the base. Normally, I would have just sketched it out then put it away, but this one kept nagging at me. So, I dragged out my old sewing machine and got busy. The result? A combination zafu/yoga mat bag/prop strap. I can tell you there's nothing like it that I've been able to find. So, with the encouragement of my yogi friends, I've patented the design and set up a website, www.myzafu.com just to see where this idea might lead me. It's all pretty amazing when you think about it. I mean, where DO these ideas come from anyway?? I sometimes imagine them as whirly-copters (that's what we called maple leaf seed pods when I was little :o), drifting down from the Universe. Sometimes they land and take hold, growing roots. Other times, they get swept away and no one notices them. Much the same with ideas . . . I know there are several other Reiki artists/creators out there. Has the energy enhanced your creativity? If so, in what ways? Let me know and I'll publish your comments in the next newsletter! If you have a website, send the URL along too to share with everyone. Comments or thoughts? Would you like to be a guest columnist? Email Teri Susan, on last issue's warning to lightworkers: I was contacted by this man back in 2001, He used all the lines listed in your article, and in the other links. A part of me wanted to believe him, but the tone of his voice was edgy and menacing to me, and frankly, I have some experience with men's bulls--t lines from my youth. My gut rang an alarm. When I told him I had to run this by my sponsor and asked to many questions, he hung up on me. (ed.note: I actually received several responses to this from many of you who have been contacted by this man but my email program crashed and i lost them . . . so sorry i wasn't able to share your story as well). Other comments: Heather, on same virus topic: There is a minor Sanskrit symbol used for viruses which is called Motor (i.e. 'a source of energy used to give motion or perform work') when it is going in, and Zanon when it is coming out. Perhaps Star can research this symbol further on the website. Since I have been working with it, I have been shown the lightning flash in the middle light up with electric blue sparks which has proved to be very effective, not just for viruses but also for astral parasites. KayC on viruses: Just to let you know, I have come across a book that was recommended to me by my Master: "The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui" published by New Age Books, web: www.newagebooks.com It is a smallish book having a pink/purple cover by Dr. Mikao Usui and Frank Arjava Petter... it doesn't show the symbols, but does show photographs of relevant 'Hand Positions' to treat specific dis-ease and illness. Not sure if this assists your journey? Follow your heart! Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in! teri@reikione.com New Experience from Karyn: Now another lady at work is pregnant and she would like me to Reiki her baby, too. But sometime between the first lady and this one, I read somewhere that you shouldn't give Reiki to babies in the womb. Actually, specifically I read that you shouldn't give Reiki to pregnant cows, and I don't think human babies were mentioned, but now I'm hesitant to give Elin's baby Reiki until I get some feedback from you all. Does anyone have any experience with this, or comments? I'd really appreciate whatever you can tell me. Elin is anxiously waiting your remarks too! Following along the same topic, Gillian asks: Has anyone used Reiki during labour either whilst in labour herself, or working as a birthing partner or even the midwife? Look forward to hearing about your experiences, and particularly if you felt it was useful in the case of any complications developing during the process. This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it to me at teri@reikione.com. Last week's question came from Teri (yes! your editor! :o) Every so often, I get emails from folks regarding the Reiki Second Degree Symbols Poster I have available online for practitioners/teachers. Needless to say, the emails are seldom nice and, if I follow up with the sender, typically discover they've recently completed Second Degree training. Here's the latest I received just last week from Jacqui - - - "As a Reiki student I am absolutely appalled by your website. The Reiki symbols are passed down and supposed to be kept in confidence by Reiki practitioners. You however, are the lowest. You obviously don't respect the art and should not be a practitioner. You have really offended me and talking to other practitioners in my area I am not the only one." So, what do you think? I know we've had discussions in the past regarding the symbols but maybe it's time again. I follow the concept that the symbols are sacred and should be treated as such. If you're a teacher, what are you telling your students about the symbols? If you're a practitioner, what have your teachers told you? What do you believe? Janet: There are many places the symbols can be found for all levels of Reiki. Secrecy and charging high prices to learn Reiki defeats the purpose of Reiki -- that as many as possible learn about the energy. It would be wonderful if one person in every family could learn Reiki. I don't think making it 'elitist' is in line with the intention of energy healing. The more who learn Reiki, the more people can be helped -- and those learn it and help others. The rippling effect is important. Learning Reiki or other energy healing techniques helps the practitioner to lose anger. The more you use Reiki, the more compassionate you will become. We need peace in our world. Michael: Sensei Usui did not originally include any symbols with Reiki attunements (Reference Arjava Petter's books on Reiki in Japan). The symbols assist us with visualizing and manifesting -- they give us something to do until our consciousness shifts and we realize that Reiki works through Intention. The attunements are what matters. Discerning sacred and secret may also be beneficial. I know you hold all of Reiki in a sacred manner (worthy of worship); however, your posters attest that you do not keep them secret. Bob: I am appalled by the discloser of symbols to all and sundry. I would not dream of asking my Reiki master friend the additional symbols he is privy to, yet as a Reiki 2 I am not. When the time is right for me to progress to Reiki master then and only then will these symbols be made known to me. The same is also true of the three symbols of level two, I would not dream of revealing them to a level one or anyone outside Reiki. I have never been told not to do so, it is just something that I feel is not the thing to do. Deb: the bible and many other things are thought of as sacred and they are also in print. I feel you created this poster for teachers to teach Reiki, not to exploit the symbols. Reiki Master Teachers should display a poster of the symbols to help the students learn the symbols or for them to look at while they practice Reiki. This helps them to memorize the symbols faster. I also feel it is important for the Teachers to be more worried about teaching their student properly, than to worry about keeping everything a secret. I personally feel that Reiki Manuals and teaching tools are a good thing. There are way too many people who are taking these speed Reiki classes and they are not really "learning" Reiki. I call these people Reiki orphans and I am seeing a lot of them out there. Obviously, this person does not know you Teri. I know you work from your heart, as I do and that it is not your intension to dishonor Reiki or the symbols in any way. Prema: Now ,too after reading the reservations one has about display of Reiki Symbols, i feel compelled to join the discussion. The symbols per se do not mean anything to a non practitioner. If he/she is a Reiki Practitioner, then they will be exposed to the symbols. Moreover, just by knowing the symbols, one cannot do much unless they are attuned. Several books are available in the open market, where all the Symbols are displayed in print and even the attunement process is explained in detail. So, displaying them on the site will only increase one's curiosity and in the long run make them learn Reiki themselves. Heather: although I too was taught that the symbols were never to be shown, I have relinquished this thinking and now teach my students from my heart that while the symbols are obviously sacred, they are far older and wiser than any organisation. Can the resistance to their publicity be in the spirit of Reiki? Do we act in love or fear if we hold on so tightly to the past? Betty: This is in response about the person that was so upset over your posting the Second degree Reiki symbols on your Website. First I want to say that I love and enjoy your Newsletter and your sites. They are wonderful and help so many people, including me. We are living in a world where there is so much sickness and disease. Isn't it time we use what is available, and share it, at an affordable rate? There are many people who could benefit from it, but cannot because of this. I know from personal experience that Reiki makes a difference in so many lives, my own as well. I use it as hands on, and also long distance, including pets. I too have meet people that still believe the symbols should remain sacred. My teacher believes that too. I believe the symbols should be treated as sacred, but not secret. I think they should be available to all people interested in Reiki, starting from Level One. A book I enjoyed was written by Reiki Master, Diane Stein's, Essential Reiki, She believed in sharing what she has learned with others, including the symbols. I have met Reiki Masters that charge anywhere from $50.00 dollars up to $1000. for First and Second Level. Also $1000 up to $5000, to become a Master. I don't understand the wide range in fees. This sure makes me wonder, maybe that is why some people want to keep them secret. This makes me wonder how Mikao Usui would feel about all this? KayC: In response to Reiki II symbols: Yet again, Sacred NOT SECRET! Do we not want to share the gift of sending healing energy to anyone/anything within and without of this universe??? If you were given tools to remove and replace the engine in a car, without a manual you would be a bit dumbfounded, yes! So a person with a Reiki II degree / or student should have already been shown /or will be shown how to apply these symbols, and would understand about the Usui History, etc... So they purchase a poster with these symbols... obviously to that person it is a comfort to them that should they forget a particular symbol, it is there in front of them, and for a patient to see them it would be like reading Japanese... useless information for them to comprehend. I remember back to when I learnt Reiki - 8-9 yrs ago I was told not to draw the symbols, we had to remember them... but because I knew even then that I have a shocking memory, I did draw them. For me, I felt a bit guilty going against my Masters wishes, but I knew I would Cherish those symbols forever now, as I had a solid record! With my personal development over the years, I hardly use the symbols now as the Intent of sharing Healing Energy brings me joyous results within myself and my clients. Having been attuned to Master Level, I myself will not be teaching until I am happy and comfortable within my learnings and my Reiki Journey. Look around now (especially on the net) and look at how many different styles and forms of Reiki there are now??? And Why, because being Human we don't always agree with being told what and how to do things, so we make a couple of changes here and there, add a symbol or two and WHAM! A new creation... If you feel so deeply within your heart that you want to follow the truly original form of Reiki, then you will become a Buddhist, just like Usui, and you will live the Buddhist lifestyle, and only when you have shown that you can live so purely (is that a word?) then you will be bestowed with the true Healings of Reiki. For the rest of us, we were given a plan to follow, and just like a rumour, that plan has grown to great proportions. There is nothing wrong with this... Our original plan just has extra rooms and lean-to's built on as extensions. So long as we follow our Hearts, and our Passions, There is no wrong choice - only learning journeys which we share with others. Some in our agreeance, some in dis-agreeance. And to finish off Teri, I'm glad you put it out there, as if it wasn't you then it would definitely be someone else. Keep up the hard work and Thanking you for your Reiki Sharing! Aaron: Symbols again huh? Not surprising though. I agree with your comment Teri that the symbols are sacred. I believe, was taught, and teach that they are. However, this does not mean that they need to be shrouded in mystery and hidden under sworn oath. In fact, two of them are simple Japanese kanji (written characters) that are in everyday use in Japan. The founder of Reiki put very little importance on the symbols (I guess most people know by now of the research saying that the symbols were given to individuals that had problems connecting with certain aspects of the energy). I assume those that are angered over the 'public availability' of the symbols have emailed every webmaster and book author to let them know of their views. I do not post the symbols all over the place, or discuss them with non-Reiki people but I print them in teaching manuals and see no problem with them being made available to those that seek them for use and study. After all, they are of no use whatsoever unless you've been attuned to them. If you're offended by their display, simple - don't visit that website or read that author's work anymore. If you like, write them a quick note but make sure you respect the right of the author to have his/her own opinions - just like you do. Anita: Yes, Reiki symbols are sacred, but so are many other things that we see every day of our lives. Images of Christ and Buddha, Mother Mary and Kwan Yin. To view a symbol does not diminish its sacredness. Rather it is a reminder of a power beyond ourselves and the Source of All That Is. Seeing a symbol IS NOT THE SAME as being able to USE it. Only one who is attuned to that level of Reiki can fully utilize the energy of the symbol that has become part of them by virtue of the attunement process. I feel that at this point in Earth history, we are being called to help oversee the healing of the planet and the survival of the human race through the Earth changes. Because symbols speak to the mental body level, seeing your posters might trigger the awareness of a non-Reiki and provide the key to helping them find their path of destiny, the Reiki Way. Beth: I am a faithful reader of your newsletter and have just read the letter you received from the individual raking you over the coals for not keeping the symbols a 'secret'. My thoughts on this are as follows. I support you fully in your decision to publish the symbols as a teaching tool or in any other manner you feel in your heart is appropriate. My second degree teacher taught me that the symbols should be a secret and I should never share them with anyone, I never agreed with that. The symbols are a visual representation of healing energy, that's it. Keeping them a 'secret' doesn't benefit anyone, except the person who charges an exorbitant fee for classes to learn the 'secret' It's too bad when people who say they are healers spend their time criticizing other healers instead of healing. I hope these 'healers' who criticize other healers are aware of the laws of karma. LJ: I think it is very sad that there are people who need to get angry over something like symbols on the internet. Jacqui's post to you was merely an example of how small minded people seek to control and manipulate free thinkers and teachers who offer information and tools freely. Placing the symbols on the internet is not disrespectful. In fact. It is just the opposite. It is disrespectful to horde or keep secret such beautiful and powerful information which leads to profound and deep healing, growth, and insight. Please don't allow her negativity to impact your decision to post on the internet. As a healer, for the clients whose guides ask me to do this for them, I draw the symbols on a piece of paper and suggest meditating on it or using it as their guides have directed. As a teacher, I teach the symbols and allow my students to keep printed copies of the symbols. I even suggest that they research the web or books for more symbols, or follow their intuition in exploring new symbols. As a student of both Traditional and Non-Traditional Reiki I was told conflicting things about the symbols and reasons for keeping them secret. I have followed my path and come upon my own truths. I am respectful. I teach my students to be respectful and to honor the power and beauty of these symbols. I allow my students to come to their own conclusions on how to do this. Sharon: As a Reiki Master/teacher I believe that the symbols are sacred but not that they shouldn't be published. This is what I was taught by my Master and this is what I teach my students. I also teach them to practice, read, question, research and follow their intuition. I understand that in the past students Mrs.Takata taught that the symbols and the information shouldn't be printed and that she drew the symbols differently for each of 21 master students. It was also once taught that Mrs. Takata was the only surviving Master after World War II. But today, as more of the original information of Dr. Usui becomes available ~~ we know that what was once considered truth is in fact fiction. Understandably so, for it weren't for Mrs. Takata bringing Reiki to America when she did ~~ who knows if we would have even heard of Reiki. I for one will forever be in her debt as Reiki has changed my life in so many wonderful ways. Reiki, as we know it today, has evolved and will continue to evolve. The internet has helped connect Reiki practitioners and teachers from all over the world. The more we share knowledge with one another ~~ the faster our own knowledge base and expertise will grow. More importantly ~~ the faster Reiki will spread and ignite the fire of lightworkers to remember and fulfill their soul purpose. Instead of wasting time and energy arguing with one another about what should or shouldn't be made available for public knowledge ~~ members of the Reiki community should unite and send Reiki (love, compassion and understanding) to those who would fight so vehemently that theirs is the only point of view. Sharon: I am commenting on your question about whether Reiki two symbols that are on your poster should be available to anyone through your web site. I am a RMT, although I am not teaching at this time. My observation has been that there are many different beliefs and practices concerning Reiki. I have researched this on my own, and found that Reiki in itself does not seem to be connected to any rules, but that people have made rules about the use of Reiki. Some people feel you always must use symbols, others just visualize them, others do not use them at all. Reiki still flows freely regardless of the way one accesses it once you are attuned. Some people charge for Reiki, some exchange gifts, some give freely without charge. It's a personal choice. I don't believe the energy is attached to any of these things. My belief is that this is the human side of practicing Reiki, and we are all human and subject to our feelings. We have to answer to our inner voice in order to have peace. As is often the case in religion, politics and relationships, we all must learn to respect each other's differences and refrain from making judgments on one another. We each find our own path. I would humbly encourage you to follow your own heart when you share your energy, knowledge and light with others. As for myself, I ask for healing to go to the person that has sent negative energy my way, and then I ask it for myself. I honor your choice to share the symbols with those that are learning Reiki. And, I thank you for your commitment to provide support and information to all of us that receive your newsletter. Next issue's question comes from Deb: How does Reiki fit in with the Christian beliefs? Recently I find myself torn between the two. The bible has caused my concern. Keeping in mind that taking "parts" out of scripture that are less than the whole can be done to make lot's of things seem "right". I'm looking for some insight, hopefully from others with the same concerns. Send your comments to teri@reikione.com with "Discussion" in the subject line. Please send your ideas/experiences/thoughts/pitfalls on starting and maintaining a Reiki practice to teri@reikione.com. The Reiki Sourcebook Bronwen and Frans Stiene, founders of the International House of Reiki, were continually coming across hints that suggested there was more to the system of Reiki than meets the eye. Historical discrepancies, symbol variations and changed attunements suggested that the system had become somewhat like a game of Chinese whispers. The inability to verify much of the 'new' historical material was also causing disillusionment amongst many practitioners. On traveling to Japan they realised that traditional Japanese Reiki communities with ancient practitioners were slowly opening their doors to Westerners and many of Reiki's unknown secrets were gradually being divulged. This journey stimulated Bronwen and Frans to write a book tracing the history of the system through to the modern day. To help clear confusion in the Reiki community this book also includes lists of branches, schools and organizations throughout the world. There is a comprehensive lineage chart, timeline, extensive glossary and general information for novices and practitioners of all levels. This book is called The Reiki Sourcebook. To learn the system of Reiki is simple and yet today the processes vary considerably from school to school. Mikao Usui created the teachings in the early 1900s and they came to the West via Hawaii in the 1940s. Here it seems the system was quietly altered to adapt to the turbulent times of World War II. The consequences are that for the last 60 years Western Reiki students have been unaware that there were other sides to the system of Reiki. After the death of the Western Reiki Master Hawayo Takata in 1980, the system took on many new faces and there are likely to be over 1000 different branches of teachings available today. Some of these new branches have channeled information; others claim to have 'the only true teachings'. All in all there have been innumerable inconsistencies in the stories that Reiki Masters have told their students. Some believe the system of Reiki is Egyptian, Tibetan, or even linked to Shambhala. Questions have arisen such as; was Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, a doctor or not? Did he charge $10,000 dollars to become a Reiki Master? Did he use manuals to teach? Was he a Christian? The intent of The Reiki Sourcebook is to look closely at all these questions and to link together information that has been spread far and wide by time and circumstances. By capturing the results of this systematic global research, it aims to share the information and to promote and stimulate discussion in the global Reiki community. It is not entirely about 'new' information but the bringing together of histories and anecdotes to create a cohesive understanding of what has happened to and been said about the teachings during the past 100 years. It is believed that this will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Mikao Usui, his teachings, The system of Reiki and related practices. It is also for beginners or those who feel lost and confused by the myriad of choices that are presented to them as Reiki in today's society. This is an attempt to create unity rather than dissension. Until now no book has tackled these questions from such a practical and analytical standpoint. If we can see where we came from - we can see clearer where we are heading. This system is about to change. It will not become more complex or difficult or contain more jargon as has happened in the past. It will simply return to its simplest, highest form and its practitioners, as individuals, will blossom taking their communities with them. Read a good book or heard some good music, healing-wise? BEWARE OF DOG!" posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor near the cash register. He asked the store's owner, "Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?" "Yep," the proprietor answered. "That's him." The stranger couldn't help being amused. "That certainly doesn't look like a dangerous dog to me," he chuckled. "Why in the world did you decide to post that sign?" "Because," the owner replied. ~~Reader's Corner~~
David, on an earlier discussion topic regarding a symbol for viruses: I have not heard of a symbol specifically for viruses. That being said, there are lots of forms (over 40) of Reiki some of which have additional symbols. As I understand it Shamballa Reiki has over 200. First, I don't much "believe in" the embellishment of Reiki with extra symbols or anything else. In my view, Reiki is a gift of Divine energy, and there is no need for (or possibility of) improvement by adding bells and whistles. I am sure others disagree with me, and I don't mean to insult anyone who is a "big fan" of any of the various forms of Reiki. I personally have studied 6 forms to the level of mastership. But, I teach only Usui Shiki Ryoho (traditional western Reiki), partly because I feel it is elegant in its simplicity. Second, my understanding and belief are that symbols are ONLY representations of ideas. It is the idea that is important. As such the symbols themselves are essentially meaningless. The idea the symbol stand for has the meaning -- recall the widely cited quote within Reiki: "Intent is Everything". The only counter argument (I know of) to this position is that the intent of the master who attuned you with a symbol is "linked" to the symbol as well, as is the intent of countless practitioners around the world, who use the same symbol. Thus the symbol involves "pooled" intent. But it all boils down to intent, in all cases. I myself very rarely use symbols anymore, except during attunements. If I want to amplify, or balance or anything else, I simply do so with intent. Neither do I (any more) use symbols with distance Reiki. I simply connect with the receiver, by intent, and offer them Reiki. With this idea in mind, if our intent is to "target" viruses in a Reiki treatment, the idea is sufficient. Linking the idea/intent to a symbol is unnecessary. If, however, it would be easier to establish the intent in your mind, I would say by all means, feel free to use a symbol (pick one).

~~Reiki Experience~~
Last year a woman I work with was pregnant, and I regularly gave her baby Reiki treatments during the workday. My friend and I both enjoyed the experience, and the baby seemed to like it too - I could feel him moving around in there, pressing against my hands. The baby was born in May and he is a wonderful little guy - has always slept through the night, rarely cries, laughs a lot and is just a good-humored person. He likes for me to hold him, and of course is receiving Reiki energy any time I do hold him. I'm not saying that the in-the-womb Reiki made him so wonderful, but I don't think it did any harm.
