~~Notes from the Editor~~ Teri Moore RMT RYT

In the last issue, I talked about all the changes I've been noticing lately and asked if any of you have been experiencing this. Here's what some of you had to say!

Lori: Teri, This feeling of change, magnetism and also openings is amazing. This month, people have sought me out to display my angel art in 3 different venues and for a magazine cover. 11 pieces sold within a week of hanging them in a hospital. So many remarks, such as 'we need them at this time'. Doors seem to be opening to push me and others I've spoken with this month to new limits in combining spirituality, Reiki, bodywork and artforms. January is usually a time for me to clean my studio and cocoon but this year, even with the below 0 weather we are experiencing, other forces are pushing me beyond. www.spiritcollage.com

David: I teach classes several times a month, but have scheduled 50% more classes (some of them individual) during the month of January. I'm noticing an increased connection desired by new people, as well as hearing from old students who want to reconnect. I think it's a part of the "January phenomenon" to some extent, but most of the people I have not myself connected beforehand and I chose not to advertise very much in January and it's the best month in the history of my practice.

Vicki: you asked whether we were making any great changes in our life? well I certainly have. In June of last year I completed Reiki 1. I only did the course out of curiosity, having absolutely no idea what would happen to me. I just knew that my doctor had suggested that I try having Reiki done to me years ago, when I was trying to get through the first few months of recovery from an addiction(alcohol). I didn't understand how it worked, all i know is that it made a difference. So I thought why not give the course a try, it was very rare we ever have an opportunity like this in the tiny town I live in. I didn't really relate to the Reiki Master,hence I haven't done any more. I also didn't and don't feel anything coming out of my hands- hence I haven't given it to anyone but myself and my dog(it didn't get rid of the mites on her- I think just made them grow with the life force????). BUT I DID feel an incredible shift in my emotional well being and.... knowingness, awareness??? correct words. From that moment on things seemed to slowly fall? into place, and my 27 year unhappy relationship with my husband started to seriously deteriorate. I was gradually able to make new friends and in November it all came to a head and I moved out on my own leaving my husband(which I have since found out, he was very grateful for as he had a girlfriend anyway). This has been a seriously big move for me, as I have been totally dependant on him suffering from depression and severe anxiety and fibromyalgia for the last few years. As well as scaring me to death, and causing a great deal of anxiety in me and still does, it also felt like the first really right thing I had done since I gave up smoking and drinking and did Reiki 1. I give myself Reiki as often as I remember but think perhaps I should take it a little more seriously, It might also help me find the higher power I desperately am trying to find. I am truly struggling with this separation business and want so much to get him (and her) out of my head and continue on with the growth I know is there for me as well as the exciting new life I have ahead of me. At the moment I truly am just in survival mode .Anyway just thought that this was a pretty major change you might like to know about. I have no doubt it was the right decision, just didn't know it was going to be SO SO hard! Many thanks to you for your news letter and any advice as to how to take the Reiki a bit more seriously in order to help myself and others would be greatly appreciated....... maybe it didn't work on me!

John: I am an avid reader of your newsletter. I have never written to you before but I believe that you or your readers may be able to assist in a task I have undertaken. My name is John Coleman. I am a committee member of the Australian Reiki Connection, the largest organization in Australia for Reiki practitioners. My role on the committee of management is to lobby the Australian Health Funds to issue rebates for Reiki Treatments.
In order to strengthen my case I am asking Reiki Practitioners everywhere...
1. In Australia, if possible, to find out which Health Funds their clients belong to if any.
2. In Australia, If a standard letter requesting Health Funds to give rebates for Reiki Treatments were supplied would their clients be willing to send it.
3. Worldwide, Do any Reiki Practitioners know of any scientific research carried out after 1997 which prove the benefits of Reiki.If so could they let me know where I can view it or get a copy of it.
ed. note: If you'd like to participate, John can be contacted through the website http://www.australianreikiconnection.com.au .

Reiki Warning

I recently received the following email from a fellow Reiki Practitioner, Taza. Typically, I don't pay much attention to this sort of thing and tend to consider it the stuff of 'Internet Urban Legend.' This warning is different, though. You see, last summer, I was contacted by this man and he told me the exact same story he's told countless other women energy workers. Don't be taken in by him if he happens to call you. I'm not trying to scare any of you, but believe we all need to be aware of the predators out there, even in the lightworker community. Here's the scoop (and the links will take you to even further information on his scam):

Do you know MARAJH (pronounced mirage)?

He has been calling us and women in our Spiritual Community saying he received their phone number while meditating in Tibet. He claims to be the WHITE LIGHT and can transmit it by Tantra Sex.

He has STDs. He says he is building a pyramid with 3 women, however, you are not one of three you are one of thousands he has told this too. He is a fraud and is raping the innocence of our spiritual community. He targets people who practice opening to the divine- Once the woman meets him, he begins stalking her with letters, email and phone calls.

He wants power and money. He works with a group who breaks up families by sending photos, e-mails and tape recordings of his phone calls to her husband. Once he separates the family from their money, lives and love; he leaves his victim and moves on.

Healing Arts Schools and Spiritual Centers are his resources to contact practitioners in REIKI, MASSAGE,YOGA, LIFE COACH, SPIRITUAL & PSYCHIC HEALING, HYPNOTHERAPY, MEDITATION, HOLISTIC HEALING, ACUPUNCTURE, TANTRA, ANIMAL COMMUNICATION, ROLFING, TRANSPERSONAL COUNSELING, ENERGY HEALERS, etc

Victims keep these contacts secret so that rarely does anyone in their circle know or understand what is happening. The isolation has helped this con-man to keep operating. HONESTY is the only way he can be revealed. Please WARN OTHERS and tell someone. Ask your friends if they have heard about him- Lessons from above may come in very unusual ways. Masters like Marajh are dangerous. DO NOT ENGAGE

~~Reiki Experience~~

New Experience from Tara
First I want to say YES I too have felt the overwhelming jump to light speed on the spiritual road.... wow! The reason hat I am writing today is to share with you and your readers something that I never really expected from myself. A year ago last August I received a communication from an e-group I was a part of asking for Volunteer help. I had been a Reiki Master for about 2 years at the time and was just fresh out of massage school. So I got online and sent an e-mail to the organizer of the event. It was a camp for people Infected and Affected by HIV and AIDS. Being fresh out of school I wanted the practice so I went. Cathy Robinson-Pickett answered my e-mail and invited me and my family to come and volunteer for the weekend. This organization is not for profit and provides a place to sleep and food and interaction in all events during the weekend. The basic premise is education. The first client I worked on let out the greatest sigh that I have ever heard and stated simply that "No one ever touches me anymore."

This was a life changing moment for me. Of the 75 campers I worked on 26..... so many were left untreated that weekend. I came home determined to get a healing force willing to come to assist in the camps. People from my Reiki share have come. Reiki shares and groups from other areas have come. Again and again you see these people, people that would not have been able to have this experience due to financial situations or just sheer dis-belief come off these tables feeling so much more peace than they can ever remember. Many of these families are foster families or grand parents taking care of their deceased children's children. This organization allowed me to hold a Reiki level one training that included all age groups. They plan for one Reiki training per year now, and love of all loves this past weekend when I was at another camp all of my students treated me with Reiki as I had been in a car accident. In the state of Florida we are 2nd in the nation for HIV infection and full blown AIDS. From Orlando to Miami one in one hundred people are positive and in the same area one in every forty-six black men are positive. The camp that I just attended was a hand picked group of people that are being mentored for their speaking ability. For their stories and for their VERY empowered children.

I am proud to say that all of my Reiki students from that organization were included and are using Reiki in their lives often if not daily. Reiki gave them back their personal power and made it possible for them to actively take part in their healing. I am so proud to have the children from this event setting a goal of raising money so that they can have a week long camp to become more and more empowered in how to be teen and peer mentors. The faces of AIDS have now changed. These children were never meant to live. The medical people thought they would not live at all. We are now looking into the eyes of an entirely new generation of AIDS infected young people and are not well equipped to help them in their lives as funding for AIDS programs is cut again and again. This group of kids formed their own committee under the organizations umbrella and now realize they are the Voices of AIDS. Reiki has become a force in Polk County as my friends and students mix with those who are yet unaware of Reiki but so very aware of AIDS. It has been a most powerful and pivotal point in my life. Reiki has led me home, and my goodness what a sweet place to be!

And some responses to last issue's experiences:

Ed: Dawn, Thank you for your frankness, comments, and questions. You do not sound dumb. I am not sure exactly what you are seeking, but would be happy to help share about Reiki if you are interested in correspondence over Internet. Though an RMT I don't charge. Are you in need of (distant) attunement again to reinforce, or historical information, or techniques, or personal healing, or guidance regarding spiritual development, or help in planning classes? Have you read books on Reiki - there are many wonderful works. One that I am now reading explains a great deal of what you ask: "The Reiki Sourcebook" by Stein, Bronwen and Frans, Alresford, UK: O Books, 2003, ISBN 1 903 816 55 6. Please do not give up on caring! Thank you for your wonderful service to humanity!

Lisa: In response to Dawn's experience ... I believe that we all get the perfect Teacher for our purpose ... not always the best for our teaching!!!! The gaps that you have noticed from your teaching are your gift from your teacher, because that will focus your learning. I really recommend ....
Vinny Amador's sites for information on different types of Reiki, manuals, & to fill in some of the gaps for you:
http://angelreiki.nu/ http://reiki-do.org/
And also Taggart's site for more information about the Japanese stuff incase that is of interest to you http://www.reiki-evolution.co.uk/
And of course there are Teri's manuals - well worth the price ;o)
To give you a clue about the extent of the differences here is what my courses are like (this is not necessarily right, just the way I do it) -
My Reiki 1 - has a prerequisite of at least 1 reiki session with someone & is 2 full days with loads of Background information, a comprehensive manual, & tons of practice. Why? Because I don't want my students searching the web & finding that they don't understand something.
My Reiki 2 - Is 2 days & normally a long time later (min 3 months). Again there is a manual & tons of practice with the symbols & distance treatments
After this they do 10 case studies & 1 observed treatment in order to get their certificate, not in order to judge them, but to help focus them so that they can be confident & ready to practice professionally.
My Masters Course - Is a 1 years apprenticeship, with a 1 day meeting each month (alone) and the attunements somewhere in the middle. The reason for this is that I believe that the Masters is a vocation & also the time that you are waving a big flag at the universe to say that you are ready to deal with all the rest of your big time karma etc!!! So a large proportion of the course is self-development work & flexed to the purposes of the student.
Check out my website for more information ... www.lisareiki.com GoodLuck with your Reiki life!!!!!

Michelle, in response to Dawn's experience: Hi Dawn: I am a Reiki Master Teacher; I've been teaching since September of 1999. I honor your desire to work with another RMT. I have worked with 6 thus far ~ different lineages, different styles of teaching .... Usui, Karuna, Spiritual Path, and a "Grand Masters Class" from a guy in India" - among others. I have 32 years in the pet industry and the person I chose to take me to RMT originally had considerable pet experience. We met once a month for several months; at the end of that time I certainly didn't feel prepared to teach. She taught I, II and III (RMT). I ended up developing my own manuals, based on information from all 6 teachers I had worked with; I teach Level I (one-on-one or in a group), II )also one-on-one or in a group), IIIA and RMT (both taught one-on-one only). Level II has 3 of the traditional symbols and 2 non-traditional symbols. IIIA has both the Tibetan and Traditional Masters symbols and 1 non-traditional symbol. My teachers training is once a week or every other week (whatever works for my students) ... and the teacher in training receives a "teachers manual" for each level, a master copy (to make copies for the students), a copy of the certificate for each level and all the materials I use in my private practice. It was my own 'anticlimactic experience' (I love your analogy!) that lead me to do this. I don't know if you have children, but as a mom I always wanted my daughter to have things that I didn't have ... as a teacher, I want my students to have things I didn't have ... and the confidence to go forward with teaching as soon as they are finished with their RMT training. This is what inspired me to do things the way I do... so, I considered myself 'inspired', rather than 'lacking in'. I don't believe anyone can teach you how to teach; it's up to you to know the material and to teach from your experience. As a teacher, I can show someone how to pass attunements, set up classes, and give them all pertinent paperwork for setting up a practice. I also ask my students to sit in on a Level I and a Level II (one or as many as they wish) before they begin teaching. I am happy to share classes with my students as well. I have set up classes and given the dates to my RMT students. If they wish to set up a class within mine, it gives them experience and helps them begin to earn money back. Most of us have paid out a lot for our training. I wanted my students to be able to start earning as soon as they could, that's why I did up manuals and provide everything they need to go out and start teaching right away. I don't expect my students to only teach what is in my manuals forever; I want them to have a starting point. As we become experienced in teaching and gain our own experiences, it seems only natural to me that we would also desire to make our own manuals. But, in the beginning, my students have a place to start. I applaud your desire to work with other Reiki Master Teachers and I encourage you to do so. A side note here - I run a monthly Reiki Share which is open to all lineages and all levels (most in my area are not run this way) ... and we have an awesome time learning from one another. So, if you have not hooked up with a group of practitioners in your area - please do so. If you cannot find a Reiki Share...Start One!! We all learn by sharing knowledge and experience ... the energy is simple. It is awesome and in the name of Love - it heals. Regardless of what we call it, any technique applied with unconditional love heals. I wish you blessings of unconditional love, light and healing on your path!

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it to me at teri@reikione.com.

Last week's question came from Star: I was working with a friend who was attuned by a different master, in another state. We were treating a man with the flu, and it was her first experience working with another Reiki master. Our client was markedly improved, and while everyone around him got sick, his symptoms stopped later that evening. The next day my Reiki friend told me, while working with me, she got an idea that there was a symbol for viruses. She went home and checked the information she had received from her teacher, and sure enough, there was. This is the first time I had heard of a symbol just for viruses. My girlfriend has been told not to share it with anyone. Has anyone here heard of this symbol? If this is something I should know about, where do I go for the information?

There were no responses to Star's question. If you'd like to still respond, please feel free to send in your comments!

Next issue's question comes from Teri (yes! your editor! :o) Every so often, I get emails from folks regarding the Reiki Second Degree Symbols Poster I have available online for practitioners/teachers. Needless to say, the emails are seldom nice and, if I follow up with the sender, typically discover they've recently completed Second Degree training. Here's the latest I received just last week from Jacqui - - -

"As a Reiki student I am absolutely appalled by your website. The Reiki symbols are passed down and supposed to be kept in confidence by Reiki practitioners. You however, are the lowest. You obviously don't respect the art and should not be a practitioner. You have really offended me and talking to other practitioners in my area I am not the only one."

So, what do you think? I know we've had discussions in the past regarding the symbols but maybe it's time again. I follow the concept that the symbols are sacred and should be treated as such. If you're a teacher, what are you telling your students about the symbols? If you're a practitioner, what have your teachers told you? What do you believe?

Send your comments to teri@reikione.com with "Discussion" in the subject line. Have a question you'd like to ask our readers? Send it in! teri@reikione.com. If you miss answering a question from a past issue, plea se feel free to still send in your comments, please just reference the question you're replying to.

~~Growing your Reiki Practice~~

Responses to Marcolene's practice space ideas in the last issue:

Masenn: I think that you idea of giving Reiki treatments in a garden setting is most splendid indeed! I have had the very same idea myself. I have recently discussed with my husband about enclosing our already attached large patio to the house with glass. I would love to keep it outdoors but I live in the desert ( Arizona ) and it gets frighteningly far too hot in the summer. I can envision orchids ( which I adore and grow ), ferns and weeping willows and keeping the large cherub/lion fountain which already sits on the patio as part of the scenery for a treatment area. We have a very large Mesquite tree that my daughter has fondly named Harold which throws off a beautiful yellow aura that would be grand for clients to gaze upon while having a treatment. We already have speakers on the patio so I can pipe in some lovely relaxing music while giving a treatment. I am a Celtic Reiki Master and the idea of involving plants/tree's in a treatment session seems a must! I believe that plants are like children, innocent, loving and pure and I just can't think of a better thing to add into a treatment area. I wish you all the blessing's I can offer on your wonderful idea, much luck and love in your venture!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Karen: In response to MARCOLENE's question regarding her 'Zen' den. It sounds like you creating a perfect space for your clients/ friends/family and yourself to unwind and relax. I'm sure you will continue to be influenced and guided with what will be appropriate for your Reiki space, Marcolene. For my own space, I've chosen natural materials and things such as plants, wood, water, earth and fire (candles). I like texture - so I have silky-satiny stuff and cashmere/fake fur throws in the Winter. I also have a small CD-player that plays quiet, relaxing music.
REIKI PRACTICE
Secondly, with regards to starting my own Reiki practice: At the moment I'm a self-employed website consultant: it pays the bills, but it is far from the spiritually-satisfying work that I'd really like to be doing! Also, since my Reiki I and II attunements, I feel far too sensitive, and less able to cope, with this kind of work. :-)
I've recently put out a 'request' that the Universe helps me on my path, and I feel that with the Universal awakening or 'quickening' that is happening right now, that it won't be long before I have my own Reiki practice.
Interestingly, since I've been focused on this request, I've really had to step out of my comfort zone:- it's like someone has said, "ok, if you're serious about this, Karen, and it's not just a 'wish', we'll give you a few tests!" So, my tests and opportunities for growth have been coming thick and fast these past few months! Eg, a project I've been working on has meant that I've needed to speak on live Radio in the US and speak confidently to Newspaper and Magazine journalists all over the World! I've never, ever done anything like this before. Still, I've got through it, and I'm sure the experience has prepared me for things to come...
It makes me feel very positive and comforted that there are so many people 'waking up' and looking to work with the light. I would say to anyone thinking about following their own 'Lightworker's' path (Reiki or otherwise) to just go for it and start the journey: be brave, let go of the fear and try and have some fun! I know that we are not given anything in life that we can't cope with, and we have an unlimited amount of help open to us. We just have to ask. Finally, thank you for this amazing newsletter and community, Teri, it's helping so many people move forward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Karyn: My comment, which I'm sure you've already thought of, is to bless the area whenever you are in it. Welcome your guides and angels and the Reiki Masters, ask them for guidance on plants or garden ornaments you might not have thought of, and see what happens. How I wish I had the space to do the same thing! It sounds really beautiful and I'm sure you'll spend lots of pleasant hours doing Reiki in your garden. I heard once that God created in us the desire to spread the beauty of plants by creating gardens, like he created bees to pollinate flowers. I love that image.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Valerie: I suggest that you do not have any fairies or angels in your garden ... and I would like to explain why. I was in the US last Dec and Jan and I can tell you that I met some people who do NOT believe in Reiki nor take it seriously because they have had a bad experience when they received it . One man said the Reiki practitioner he met gave him Reiki and read Tarot cards, the other said the Reiki practitioner was crazy about astrology , etc. So these people , and hundreds more, I am sure, believe Reiki has to do with mysticism , which is not true at all. Reiki has nothing to do with any religion or mysticism so it is better not to associate it with anything not to compromise its credibility and seriousness. Here in Brazil we are doing a great job and explain to people that Reiki is a kind of Japanese holistic therapy. This way people see it as "alternative medicine"and trust us and the benefits of Reiki. I wish you good luck and success.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Iris: i am responding to marcolene (growing your reiki practice) and others that offer their reiki services as a home based business. i have recently begun preparing myself, my family, and my home to offer reiki as part of a home based business. i have a room in my basement that i intend to use, but i am also interested in using my backyard/garden as a location also. i would like to know what type of outdoor structures others are using that perform reiki in their gardens/backyards. also, is anyone using anything other than a massage table to perform reiki? Thirdly, i would like to ask for all of you with home based businesses to send lots of loving, productive energy my way. i know that this is what i am to do; however, i am experiencing the conflict and fear of leaving the work world. thanks in advance.

While a friend and I were visiting Annapolis, we noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand. "What are they doing?" I asked our tour guide.

"Each year," he replied with a grin, "The upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."

"So what's the answer?" my friend asked him when we were out of earshot of the freshmen.

The guide replied, "One."
