Using Crystals with Reiki

If you've thought about using crystals and gemstones in combination with a Reiki treatment, but weren't sure how to get started, I offer the following excerpt from my First Degree Manual:

Crystals and other stones can be used along with Reiki energy. Select several crystals/stones in the various colors of the chakras. Spend some time holding them, visualizing the energy of Reiki flowing through them to cleansing the stones. Once completed, store them in your treatment area. They’ll collect energy every time you do a session in their presence.

To use, after the client is lying down, place the colored stones over the corresponding chakra. If using all clear crystals, place them in the same fashion, or use your intuition to guide you as to their placement. Some practitioners place the crystals under the treatment table rather than on the client. Conduct the Reiki session as you normally would – the stones amplify the energy and aid in focusing it.

After the session, remove the crystals. Follow with a cleansing meditation or run the stones under cool water to prepare them for your next client.
If you happen to have a Reiki box, you can keep your crystals in it. Every time you send energy while holding the box and any written intentions you've placed within it, the crystals will also receive a Reiki charge. The crystals, when combined with the Reiki energy, become a powerful tool for doing distance work.

~~Reader's Corner~~

Lisa: I just wanted to send you some thoughts from way down here in Australia to say a big thank you for enabling so many wonderful beings of light to share and deepen their knowledge of not just Reiki, but all aspects of well-being, through your newsletters. I have also been blessed with the teachings of Reiki and my life is so much richer (meaningful) because of it! I hope that the universe surrounds you, your family and friends with much love and happiness throughout the new year ahead and may many great things fill your world.

Sandy, on the last issue's discussion topic: The discussion about how Dr. Usui got attuned leads me to another train of thought. I think many people have reiki in them already before being physically attuned by a master. For example, my teacher accidentally discovered something coming out of her hands when a friend broke her leg and she was trying to help. I discovered something coming out of my hands when I was doing yoga and my son, who was on the other side of the room, said he was getting "zapped" every time my hands pointed in his direction. My son seems to have it as well, even though he hasn't been attuned. Finding this energy led both my teacher and I to explore more and figure out what it was, which lead us to reiki, where we were attuned and learned how to use this energy properly. How do you think we get this energy before being attuned? Is it because we had reiki in a past life? Does everyone have it buried inside but only some of us become aware of it? I'd be interested in what you think.

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! Send them in! teri@reikione.com

~~Reiki Experience~~

Responses to MaryAnn's experience in treating her dog with Reiki - - -

crazeehound: In my experience with Dogs no you aren't they nudge/push you or position themselves where they want you to lay hands/feet on. if your dog didn't want reiki he/she would walk away, dogs are more aware than us and open, they don't need as long being treated either. watch they don't get to be reiki junkies! lol!

Rik: Based on the information provided, you don't seem to be doing anything wrong. Dogs in particular will often go into that "love me" mode if they are not in great pain or otherwise critically ill. Reiki is probably a new and pleasant sensation to your dog and you pet is responding in the most loving way it understands. When I encounter this I simply delay or interrupt the Reiki for a few minutes and give the dog a few minutes of quiet pet and talk time. Once they get a bit sated at that level (look for deep relaxed breathing or a nice long sigh), I go back to the Reiki. If I have to repeat this once or twice more during the session, it's no big deal. However, if the pet is a real attention hound (pardon the pun), I will ask a second person who knows the pet well to join in and quietly pet the animal while I work on the Reiki aspects. Dogs (and especially cats) will often just get up and walk away when they have had enough Reiki; pet sessions are usually shorter too. Good luck and consider releasing your fear, you are doing wonderful work.

Ginger: I did reiki on my dog Ginger almost every day after I had my reiki I attunement. I took the class especially for her because she suffered from cluster seizures and was on some serious medicines. Any time she would start having a seizure, I would put my hands on her head and she would almost immediately settle down and fall asleep. She wouldn't always sit still for reiki unless she was having a seizure. I was told that animals are very sensitive and that when they have had enough, they will walk away. I believe that I was given an extra year with her because of her reiki treatments. We had to put her to sleep in June because of all the damage done to her esophagus and stomach from the medicines that she had to have to keep from having the seizures. I still send her some reiki occasionally when I think about her and know she's happier in heaven.

Sandy: I have lots of experience doing reiki on dogs. They are very sensitive to reiki and definitely feel it. Every dog is different. Some are a bit leery at first, and seem to wonder what in the heck you're doing to them, but most settle down and start to enjoy it. They will often present you with a belly or some other part of their body that they want you to work on. Because they are smaller than us, the energy is absorbed faster and you don't have to spend as much time with them as you would a human. They will always let you know when they're done by getting up and walking away. Sometimes they'll come back in a few minutes for more and sometimes not. Once I've given a dog reiki, they seem to remember me and as soon as they see me they immediately flop onto their sides for a treatment! The key is to always respect the wishes of the dog. If he/she isn't in the mood, don't force it. One technique you can use is called "Tellington Touch," which is to gently massage in a circular motion with one hand while you administer reiki with the other. It seems to calm them if they're agitated. It's been very enjoyable working with dogs. They have sweet spirits (as do humans), and they are very open to telepathic communication. Once I worked on a dog who seemed to be close to death. He was very agitated and I had the feeling he was holding on for his family's sake. I mentally sent him the message that he had permission to go whenever he was ready, and he immediately sighed and relaxed in my arms. He didn't die--he just relaxed about it, and is still alive 5 months later. I send him long distance reiki sometimes and his family marvels over how much energy he still has. I've also done reiki on a depressed pet turtle, and her family noticed a huge difference in her energy level, and I give reiki to my pet bird, who reacts instantly since he's small.

Robin: I’ve had very little experience doing Reiki on animals, however, I can tell you that when I do Reiki on someone in my home, when my cat is in the house, she LOVES to jump up and sit on my Reiki table or the client and purrs like crazy! Also, once when I was Reikiing my mother-in-law’s Cockatoo, who is very busy and doesn’t ever sit still for any length of time, she sat quietly on my lap for about 20 full minutes! It was awesome to see her receiving the energy! I don’t think that you are doing anything wrong. Quite possibly she is showing you where she needs to receive the energy the most. Just as our hands often guide us to where we need to go, maybe she’s getting the same sense and trying to let you know what she knows! Keep practicing, as you will begin to understand and “feel” more and more with the more experience you get. Just trust that when the time is right, your knowledge and perceptions will grow.

Caroline: I do Reiki on animals, mostly dogs. Rolling on their backs is quite common. This is because they aren't used to the energy yet. What I usually do is play with dogs first, scratching and petting, then calm down the petting, then I'll place my hands on them. Even then, they may only take the Reiki for a short time. Remember, animals are very present, in the moment, unlike most of us. If they don't need it, often they won't take it and they will walk away when they've had enough. If there is an injury you're looking to treat, you can also try playing calming music while you work on your dog, that might help as well. Also, always remember to ask permission or at least inform your dog what you're doing either orally or through thoughts. PawsforReiki.homestead.com

Barbara: Recently, my dog became very ill w/infected teeth that I didn't realize that he had. He was very lethargic & had glazed eyes, would lay around all day & not move, not eat. In retrospect, I think he became septic from the teeth infection but at the time I didn't know what was doing on w/him & I was in the middle of moving so the timing was bad. I did Reiki to him & he just laid there & absorbed it, for several days. He perked up after a couple days of it, & I finally took him to the vet & found out about the teeth. I think the Reiki helped keep him going & found it interesting that he finally accepted it, right when he needed it most... probably no coincidence! So, you're probably not doing anything wrong, dogs have a different way of dealing w/the energy.

Bonnie: No, I don't think that you are doing anything wrong. In my experience, pets take Reiki much "faster", and therefore will need/tolerate much shorter sessions that a person does. It sounds as if your dog is happy, and accepting of the Reiki - he/she is not attempting to push you away, or to get away. The Reiki will be accepted, and will work, no matter what the hand positions. :)

Deb: First off, welcome to the healing community! While it is normal to experience self-doubt when beginning healing work, please spend some time each day on letting the self-doubt go and embracing the Work itself. Reiki can never be "wrong," so if in the beginning you are having trouble trusting yourself, at least trust the Reiki. The dog who lives with me now goes absolutely ecstatic when I do Reiki on him. The dog that I had before him was very uncomfortable with Reiki when I first began working on him; what I learned was that he did not like the "tingling" feeling that it gave him. Dogs, like people, have very individual reactions. Respect the feedback that you get, and offer the healing with the intention of the Highest Good, and you will be just fine!

Responses to Kathy's experience regarding pregnancies and Reiki - - -

Rik: Perhaps, while your bodymind was open to thoughts and feelings of pregnancy, the related message about your daughter came through. As to the source of it, well... Perhaps an Angel or guide. Did you feel a characteristic "signature" behind it which is associated with your Angel or Guide? Such as, a typical feeling, image, sound or something you sense when they are working with you? Perhaps the new life in your daughter, or yet some other source came through to you. Either way, congratulations on that new being soon to join your family. You healing intention is a wonderful expression of Love for your friend. Yet as we know, any Healing which does take place is between between the client and the Universe. Strong expectations or feeling a sense of responsibility on the outcome do not seem to help the Reiki Healing process. Simply trust the Reiki Healing process you have been trained in and have obviously been using successfully. If your friend is undergoing medial treatments through a fertility specialist (I hope so, there are several root causes of infertility related to endometriosis which are treated differently) and doing other healthful things to help herself. You can always add Reiki to those processes as well to facilitate their highest benefit. You are doing wonderful work for your friend, she is fortunate to have you near.

~~Up for Discussion~~
This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it to me at teri@reikione.com.

Last week's question came from Jan: Do you think it is always necessary to use the distance symbol to be able to send distant healing, or will it still be sent just by your intention?

Barbara: Everyone seems to want to skip steps with that big old distance symbol. I do an exercise with my students so that they can actually experience the difference. I have them sit across the room from each other and one person beams Reiki to the other for a few minutes. Then I have them draw the distance symbol out in light and continue to beam Reiki for a few more minutes. Students who are aware of the energy in the first place have been able to feel the increase in sensation and energy once the distance symbol is drawn. Try this simple exercise and notice the effect. If the difference can be felt across a room then surely it is of value to draw the distance symbol when you are sending Reiki a greater distance. I believe that we can send Reiki without the distance symbol. Just our intent will get it to where it needs to go the same way a prayer would. Energy follows intention. I also feel that when we actually draw out the symbols we are very clearly activating them. We know how to draw them and the energy is easily accessed. Drawing the symbols makes the request to Spirit, sets the vibration and makes the intent very clear. For me, it always feels faster and clearer when I take the time to draw out the symbols. I see the light patterns and feel the strong vibration of the symbols as I draw them. That big old distance symbols is a beautiful bridge of light that bridges time and space. There are so many ways we can use this symbol. I draw it at the beginning of every healing... even when the client is present. I want that bridge to be there because whatever issues the client wants to heal did not happen in present time. It took place in the past, so with the distance symbol we bring that into the present and it will also be healed for the future. Use it in spirit release work to create a bridge so that the spirit can easily cross to the other side. When you feel something negative in a room use the distance symbol to help it move up into the light and be transformed. It is to be used anytime you wish to transcend time and space. If we take the time to draw the symbols we really get connected to their energy. I can feel the symbols when they are drawn and my field has learned to discern which has been drawn. I very often see the symbols as they are drawn.... something I would miss if we never drew them again. Sometimes just saying the sacred name three times is enough to evoke them and sometimes I am guided to draw them out in light. However I do it, I like to feel that I have truly connected to the power of the symbol I intend to use. I think the first step is getting connected to the symbols. Perhaps the symbols are like training wheels, and once you know how to draw them quickly and can easily connect with the energy of each one, you won't need to draw them... you will feel them, see them or sense them. That, for me, is what clear intent is all about.

Jan: Yes, I believe intention is all it takes. Before i was reiki two, i did reiki for people by envisioning my hands as enormous, and picturing them standing between my hands, receiving the energy. Also, I was given a symbol when i first became attuned by my guides, and was told it meant to unify, so i use this even now to bring myself and the recipient together. I was surprised to find this symbol carved into a piece of marble at a gift shop, with a tag line describing it as "Asian". Anyway, intention is what causes each of us to exist in the first place, intention how the world is what it is, and i don't see how reiki could possibly exist outside of those laws. How fair would it be to someone who had some kind of damage to the brain, and couldn't perceive or translate symbols? Reiki is for everyone, and the so called sacred symbols are really just characters in a language a lot of people speak read and write every day. The most important thing is the energy and the intent with which it is sent.

Allison: Use of the distance symbol (or any symbol, for that matter!) is up to the individual, but for establishing the "bridge" between people when sending at a distance, patterning or imagining it can sure make the job easier. Once you become completely at ease using the symbols (I encourage respectful play and experimentation to this end!) you may find that you are no longer in need of them. Like someone learning to swim who uses water wings, the symbols are your safety net - your buoyancy aid - as you float around in the energy pool. As the days go by your skills and ease will increase until, one day, you may just find that you simply don't need to deliberately pattern the symbols anymore. Maybe you'll be fine with just picturing them in your mind's eye. Or perhaps.... not at all. Intention goes a loooong way.

Next issue's question comes from Barbara: Do you think Reiki should be taught to children and what age is a suitable age to begin teaching them?
