~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

I've been teaching quite a bit lately and the process of attunements has been on my mind. Looking at my hands as I type this week's newsletter, I can't help but feel awe and wonder at their ability to bring Reiki to another human being. Even though I am just a channel for this gift of the Universe, I begin to feel my artist self emerging during these times. Taking the energy and molding it, presenting it and the symbols to the student through the simple process of touch - I feel a bond to the Creator of All and a direct connection to my Higher Power.

In the Twelve Step program of Al-Anon, we say our world view is filtered through the Steps and Traditions. In the practice and teaching of Reiki, our view is filtered through the warmth and light of the Universe. At the beginning and end of each attunement, I give thanks for the simple gift of Reiki and the ability to share it with others.

~~Reader's Corner~~

Teri: Speaking of 'artist self,' I've been busy these past weeks in my workshop forming silver and gemstones into wearable creations. I now invite you to visit http://www.reikione.com/shop.htm to take a look at a new art jewelry piece I created just today - a silver and gemstone pendant bearing the Reiki Kanji I commissioned for the ReikiOne website.

Barbara: Thank you for putting the effort into the newsletter. I really enjoy reading it, but at times I'm so busy that I let it sit, unread for several days. then, if I can, I read, it not, I delete. but, I do not want to stop receiving it! I don't mind that it's coming a little less often, I realize that you're busy & am so grateful for your work.

Tina: Re the discussion on spirit guides, etc: I had been looking forward to receiving this kind of guidance, but following the attunements, didn't feel I had had any. Then one day I realised that almost every time I meditated I was seeing a smiling young woman in my mind's eye, standing in front of a blue ocean among hibiscus bushes. I recognized her as being my Fijian nanny from long ago, when I was a tiny child. There was enormous love between us in those days, and she was very sad when, aged six,I left Fiji, never to see her again. I had all but forgotten her since then. So now I'm wondering if SHE could in fact be a spirit guide for me? Any similar experiences or thoughts?

Iris: thank you for taking the time to publish this newsletter. i have been slow to submit things or respond to other submissions, mostly because i am lazy these days and also because i sometimes felt like Bill felt at his Reiki attunement (mentioned in the last newsletter). today after reading the newsletter i am moved to offer a few words. thanks for the call to action. bi-monthly or weekly is fine for me. i appreciate your taking the time to write and order your thoughts and create a family thru this newsletter.my response to Bill's Reiki experience. at my first attunement (i am second degree now) my conflicting inner voices were quiet because i was following in the footsteps of my god-mother and Reiki Master and felt safe and free. not long after my second attunement i started to feel like i was not really in a position to heal others as things in my life had begun to look less than what I though was fitting for someone who was acting as a facilitator for healing. can you believe those conflicting voices won out in my life for over 3 years? to date those conflicting voices have less of a place in my life and lately i have been growing more comfortable with the idea of starting a home based natural health and healing practice. despite the fear and occasional conversation with the judge, critic, and nay sayer that are a part of my mind set, i am prayerful that my truest intentions to serve, teach, and heal will grow into a health and healing practice that will serve as my career in serving the world community through God and fund my ability to release a 9to5 gig. when i read Bill's Reiki experience and your opening on Namaste, my guides spoke to me and peeled another layer of the onion like fear from my eyes, ears, and heart. thanks to you both for that blessing. that makes the third one today so far (smile). Today i have the strength to try one more idea and go that much farther in my pursuit of living and cultivating a life of balance and harmony through Reiki. Namaste to both of you. i feel good saying that now that your sharing has helped me to realize the divine in me - no matter what my life circumstances are.

Jan: Following on from somebody else's experience of attunement, I have to say I had nothing with Reiki 1. When I did 2 though it was the most beautiful experience, I saw a circle of angels circle around me holding hands, they were all smiling and sending out so much love I thought I was going to burst. They said that this was the right thing to do and that I was protected and perfectly safe, I cried my eyes out, that was two years ago now and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

~~Reiki Experience~~

Sophia: I have been receiving your newsletter for a while now and always reflect back on how many people find this energy so incredible and life changing, almost to a point were you want to give off this energy to others. Well that is how I felt until last week when the universe had a lesson for me. I had heard of a Natural healer in my neighborhood that held weekly group meditation and healing sessions that I decided to attend. On my arrival I found that I was the 'new' person in the group and that most of the people had been attuned to reiki by this gentleman. We were then asked the question as to whether we wanted to give healing or receive healing and I said that I would like to give. Everyone was paired off and before commencing I was told that I cannot do any form of reiki or healing on anyone as I did not know their code of ethics & conduct to which I was taken aback. I did mention that I was attuned to level 3 reiki and that I was fully aware thru my common sense and training to understand inappropriate behavior/hand positions etc. Well here I stood thinking that we have this incredible source of energy from the Universe that is freely available to all of us used only for the highest good of all beings and all I was told about was "my code, my ethics". I left feeling saddened by all of this and with the lesson that we are taken to exactly were we are meant to be, especially if there's a lesson to be learnt.

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue. Have a question you'd like to get input on? Send it to me at teri@reikione.com.

Last week's question came from Stephanie: There are a few things about Reiki I find confusing. Would someone help me with this one please......What is the difference between a Reiki Master and a Reiki Grand Master?

Richard: I have been studying Reiki for awhile and have been a Reikimaster for about four years. My understanding is that there is no such thing as a Grandmaster. The highest level anyone can attain is a Reikimaster. Someone can say they are a Grandmaster but it doesn't mean it's true. I could be wrong but my understanding is that there is no such thing as a Grandmaster and there never has been one. I read at one point after Mrs.. Hawayo Takata died her Granddaughter,Phyllis Furumoto decided she was the Grandmaster ,Lineage bearer of Reiki. But I have never read any proof that such a title every existed outside of peoples imagination.I hope this was helpful.I am looking forward to reading what others think about this.

David: I offer the following in response to the discussion question about Grand Master. This is excerpted from the book I am writing called "A History and Understanding of Reiki", presently still in draft stage.
*Western Reiki after Mrs. Takata:
Much has transpired within western Reiki after the passing of Mrs. Takata. Reiki has evolved substantially. Reiki has spread throughout the United States and Europe and India. Many masters have added or taken away some techniques and otherwise modified the teachings. The assortment of techniques added includes Tibetan, Chi Kung, and Wicca. And new symbols -- even whole new 'styles' -- have been created. Some argue that not all of this is good. On the other hand, we have learned so much and Reiki has spread so very far and wide. Please read on. Eventually you are invited to draw your own conclusions.
*The Radiance Technique and the Reiki Alliance
After Mrs. Takata's passing in 1980, western (American) Reiki split into two main schools. Barbara Weber Ray founded/developed the Radiance Technique (which she dubbed "Real Reiki"). Mrs. Takata's grand daughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto founded/developed the Reiki Alliance, which included the remaining masters taught by Mrs. Takata. This split was based on disagreements about the proper 'ways' to teach Reiki. The disagreements covered many things, ranging from the wording of the Reiki principles, to how much to charge. And, of course this all degenerated into 'arguments' about "right and wrong". In the process of arguing, some masters began to extol the concept of a "Grand Master and Lineage Bearer". In this view, Usui-sensei had been the first "Grand Master" and Dr. Hayashi had been his successor. Mrs. Takata, in turn, had become the "Grand Master". And, eventually her grand daughter, Mrs. Furumoto claimed the succeeding grand-mastership (and lineage bearing). It is generally viewed now that the concept of "grand mastership" was no more than part of the squabble about who knew the 'right' way to teach Reiki (no offense intended to those who choose to "believe in" these concepts). Mrs. Takata is not known to have ever referred to herself as "Grand Master" and there is no history of Usui using the term nor is it currently used in Usui-sensei's school, which still exists in Japan. (if you'd like to visit David's site for more info, go to www.davidsmithcmt.com).

John: None.

Franziska: I will start with an easy answer: If you learn Reiki in India and you are a Reiki Master you can initiate people into 1st and 2nd degree. If you are an Indian Grand Master you can initiate people into the Master level. In the West things are a little different and more complicated. Some people call the additionally channeled Non-Usui 5th and 6th Reiki grades the Grand master degrees. But I do not have any experience into these two courses. And last I believe the term Grand Master was developed in times when people felt a need for structure in the Reiki world and had to develop a term for the leading figures of several groupings.

Taggart: A Reiki Grand Master is someone who likes to have a big impressive-sounding title. It does not mean anything. There are no Grand Masters of Reiki. It is nonsense.

Allison: Grandmaster is a term that was created by the Reiki Alliance (located in the USA and Europe). The Alliance was formed a year after Takata's death by many elected Masters in an effort to preserve the Reiki tradition and to standardize its teaching practices. Takata's grand-daughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto was designated a GrandMaster of the Usui System by the Alliance in 1983, and today she still holds that position. In early 1988 Furumoto granted "authorization" for all Reiki Masters to initiate students into the Third (Master) Degree. Before this point, only Furumoto could initiate students into their Master level. Furumoto changed the system, thereby allowing Reiki to be spread quickly across the globe. Don't be fooled into thinking of Reiki as a hierarchy. The Reiki Alliance is huge and quite powerful, but does not have all the answers! The term Master, Grandmaster....these are titles that have, in my opinion, very little bearing on how powerful or ethical a healer you are. One of my teachers, Dave King (Usui-Do, Toronto) received all his Reiki training in Japan and commented that in Japan, there is no such thing as a Grandmaster! Grandmaster is an American creation in Takata's lineage. You can't be the Grand Poobah of energy - energy just....is. I believe that the Alliance designated Furumoto as "Grandmaster" out of respect for her grandmother (Takata). It sounds complicated but its really very simple, provided you remember that a novice Reiki I can be just as powerful, even more so, than their Teacher! So remember that the titles mean very little. Its how you use your Reiki gifts that will define you as a Master.

Next week's question comes from JT: I have been attuned to Masters Level, nearly a year and a half ago. I accepted what was lectured out to me without much questioning (like a good student) as I have not that much experience to question or doubt. It is always better to accept in good faith to begin with. Now, thoughts begin to filter through my mind as to how Dr Usui got attuned in the first place, ie who attuned him. Did it come because if intense meditation and rigid fasting by its own accord? Is attunement all that necessary and is there other ways that we can get our own attunement, other than by a Reiki Master, noting that all are born healers to varying degrees.

YOU KNOW YOU NEED A NEW CAR WHEN....

You have to go to a repair center every thousand miles to get the duct tape replaced.

You accidentally drive into a junkyard, drive out, and get accused of stealing.

The Blue Book lists your car under "Health Risks"

You return to your car and find someone broke in and left a hundred dollars and a new stereo.

You pull over to let a fire truck go by, and it stops behind you.
