Self Healing With Reiki

I hear countless stories from people about how Reiki has changed their lives. Each time I feel deep gratitude for this incredible, boundless energy so easily accessible to us all. Work situations change, relationships become more rewarding & fulfilling. Sometimes endings make way for new beginnings. It is not always easy, but it is always in the upwards flow of aligning us with our Higher Selves and enabling us to fulfill more of our unrealised potential.

The healing process doesn't stop with the 1st Degree attunement. Nor the second. Nor Mastership! It continues till we become fully realised, enlightened beings. So the next time you wonder what's "wrong" with you, look within. Notice what you are actually feeling. Give it space! Acknowledge it. Accept it. Allow it to just be! In the act of acceptance and acknowledgement we begin to learn, grow and therefore transform the way we feel. The first key is awareness, the 2nd is acceptance.

In the words of Gaston St. Pierre:
1. Notice the facts.
2. Acknowledge their presence.
3. Then Let Them Be!

It is through an awareness of how we really are (not how we think we "should" be) and an open heart chakra that we release & transform withheld emotion and outmoded beliefs. It is through healing ourselves that we heal the world.

It never works the other way round!

~~Reader's Corner~~

Bonnie: I recently read of your website thru an "About.com" newsletter and am I glad I did!!!! I have been practicing reiki for 8 years now, mainly because of a nasty back problem, and although it hasn't completely healed, it is much better. I also give reiki treatments to anyone who asks, and get great results from that. It is true, that even though the reiki has not completely healed me, it is still good to give it to others.......and your letters have reassured me of that since I have had questions about it. and miraculously, your newsletter came by a miracle!!!!!! Thank you so much for this great website!!!! It has helped me immensely, not only for information, but also answering questions no one else could!!!!

Taza: I would like to share what I think is a marvelous tool for sending Reiki to the whole Earth right now, it's a huggable planet! available from www.huggaplanet.com, which is a small, family-type enterprise. They come in several varieties (political boundaries, no political boundaries, Spanish or English print, neon or standard colors) and the medium-sized ones are under $20. (Mine is so old that it lists the USSR on it--I got it when my son was about 4, he is now 19...) Anyway, wanted to pass this on to your mailing list. I use it to send Reiki every day now. Once on the home page for Hugg-A-Planet, click "Hugg-A-Planets" under "Products" on the left hand side and you will be able to see all the different varieties.

Renee: Regarding Reiki and Pregnancy the following ... I am in Los Angeles and recently came in contact with fabulous women who call themselves "DOULA" ( Greek for Woman of/in service). The doula's take care of women in their last stages of pregnancy -- they are not medically trained, but are taking care of the mother and baby. I met these women on a Reiki - initiation weekend -- and because of their high sensitivity to mother and baby were so well suited to be Reiki practitioners ... when they were practicing on each other, the room was filled with so much love energy ... So, if you are a Reiki Master and Teacher, please find out if there is a Doula organization where you live and tell them about Reiki -

Anita, on sending energy distantly: There are a number of ways that humans (Reiki and non-Reiki) can send distance healing. The simplest is to call on the Angels of Mercy and Healing to minister to those in need. The second is to go in meditation to the Principality, the Heavenly Angel in charge of that area's healers (both in and out of body) and ask her to see that those in need will find the help they require. Healing extends beyond physical needs. Relationships and political situations can benefit from healing energy sent that direction. For Reiki I's and non-Reiki people, a simple way to send energy is to amplify it through pyramid hands. Keeping four fingers together but thumbs apart, touch the tips of your thumbs together, and connect the index fingertips to form a triangle. With fingers up and palms out, center the pyramid over your heart and visualize, through the center, the person or situation in need. Now direct energy from your Third Eye, the laser chakras behind the eyes, and your heartsight through the pyramid to join with the energy flowing from your hands. This hand form ("finger mode") is what Shaolin Kung Fu monks use in their salutation to focus chi. I am Reiki Master to some of the Shaolin Kung Fu in St Louis and am an honorary member of the Black Dragon Society.

Paola, in response to an earlier discussion: I´m a Level II practitioner. When I was a first level, It worked perfectly well to me writing my request or wish on a piece of paper and send Reiki to it several time a day or whenever I could. As you said Karen the intent matters, I wish you the best. Peace and Love.

Tara: Regarding Schizophrenia and Reiki: I am sure that Reiki does not chose one type of experience or imbalance as unworthy over another. I think we must truly remember the humility that Reiki comes to us from. The peace and unjudgemental aspects of Reiki are what draw so many of us to rest in the bosom of self healing and the experience of Reiki. I think that as you delve deeper and deeper into the Reiki experience the defining lines become more blurry. Reiki being an always shifting and changing experience in and of itself doesn't not define those who are acceptable as a practitioner or those who are not. The gift of Reiki is that it is available for all and simple enough for every person and being to use. It is the judgment of self and our egos who begin to demand, in my opinion, for the hierarchy that sometimes seems to exist in the Reiki circles. No one is more deserving than everyone, and if one person out of everyone becomes undeserving, then do we not all become undeserving in that definition? In my recent experiences with Karuna Reiki, although I fought the need to learn more symbols, I am finding that the more I fight to change what I think is WRONG with me the harder my life seems to be. Acceptance of self seems to be the greatest gift that I can give myself or my clients, it is the only peace that I seem to find these days because it is not experienced outside of my self but inside of my own soul. Each time I judge a practice I am immediately hit with delving deeper into my judgment. For me the truth is that I AM, Reiki IS, YOU ARE, WE ARE, that great I AM in everything we speak and do and experience. No one is more deserving than another... no one is less deserving than another, we all deserve together and we just are.... simple, basic, human, GOD.....

~~Reiki Experience~~

Last week, Taza shared this experience:
I am a Reiki II practitioner. My 1st Reiki attunement was in 1985, and my second was in 1996. Perhaps one reason I waited so long to go on with the study of Reiki is that I had an experience of sharing Reiki that unsettled me deeply. I was trading bodywork (I'm also a LMT) for African dance classes in the spring of 1990, working on the instructor. I went to work on her one day and she was complaining of uterine cramping. I gave Reiki on her abdomen and my hands got very hot, which in my experience usually indicates an area in need of healing. Two days later, she was in the hospital having an emergency hysterectomy. I visited her there and could tell that she thought I had precipitated the need for the surgery. I couldn't help but associate the two events in a cause-and-effect way in my head. For a long time I carried guilt over this occurrence. I stopped taking the dance class and lost touch with the teacher. Over the course of time, I told myself that Reiki does no harm, and that she may have been sicker without the Reiki treatment, but I think I still have some traces of the "I did this" mentality. Has anyone ever had a similar experience, and if so, how would you recommend that I heal this memory?

Bonnie responds: In answer to Taza's guilt-ridden question.....the heat generating from the dance instructor's abdomen, (infected appendix), was already a problem and has absolutely NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!!!!!!!! You have NO reason in the world to feel guilty!!!!!!!!! and I can't understand why you do........my reiki master taught us......when giving a reiki treatment, if you feel an intense heat coming from anywhere in the body, it means something is wrong, an inflammation, infection, etc......and do advise the patient to seek medical help......simple as that!!!!!! To take away the guilt, pray the prayer before giving yourself a reiki treatment, that you're doing this for guilt healing......... give yourself reiki head treatments daily is my advice........or do the psyche treatment, and ask the powers of the universe to heal you. I hope this is of help to you........but I beg you to GET OVER THESE GUILT FEELINGS AS THEY ARE WORTHLESS!!!!!!! CERTAINLY NOT YOUR FAULT IN ANY WAY....just a good lesson you learned. That dance teacher would
have had that operation, regardless!!!!!!

Allison: Free yourself of the guilt of this situation - all you did was follow through on a request for Reiki energy - a marvelous thing! You offered the energy, and obviously it was accepted. Here's a tough lesson to learn - and I've been there! - Leave Your Ego Out of It! As hard as this is to believe, you had nothing to do with this woman's hysterectomy. The energy followed the path it needed to follow. Remember, you are the conduit, not the healer. The woman was her own healer. It was her body/mind/spirit that necessitated the hysterectomy. Perhaps the Reiki you offered acted as a catalyst to that end, but Tarza, YOU had very little to do with it. Remember as well that if she not wanted that energy, or had serious doubts about whether it was right for her, the Reiki would have simply switched off. Reiki does not impose itself on people who don't want it. If anything, the energy you offered probably eased what would have been an even more painful or dangerous situation. With that said, its time to heal the anxiety and guilt you carry from that memory. Send distance Reiki back to that healing. I like to wait until nightfall to send distance Reiki. I recommend waiting for the calm of evening or night, lighting a single candle, being still and at peace with yourself for a few minutes. Focus and relax - open to the healing you are about to offer. Imagine the date and the situation as vividly as you possibly can and relive the emotions of that experience. State your intent to heal the fall-out that resulted from that healing. Ask for release from the guilt. Use the 1st symbol to focus the energy and imagine it spinning all around you, bouncing off the walls, through your hands and heart. Cry if you want! Let any emotion flow through you - anger, sadness, guilt, joy - give yourself permission to be there for as long as you wish! Envision that you are free from the sadness surrounding the experience, and imagine yourself wholly liberated of this emotional burden. Once your distance healing is ended and you've given yourself a few days to let the healing settle, see if there is any kind of negative residue left from the situation in your heart or head. If there is, do another distance sending to heal specific issues. I'm sending you happy thoughts and loads of support!

Renee: Some times it's hard to realize that Reiki energy can be a catalyst for something that you did not expect, especially something like major surgery or even death ... but that is the beauty of Reiki ... I once was asked to participate in a healing session ... a dear friend of mine, a Reiki practitioner, had a friend who was in such pain that she couldn't walk or sit or sleep anymore ... i agreed and we give her a wonderful treatment ... somehow i could feel that this was "different" ... my hands got very very hot at certain times and the client was restless ... my friend said afterwards that she didn't think it "worked" and was very upset about it .. i reminded her that Reiki will do what is necessary and we are not in control of the outcome ... a couple of months later her friend passed away ... did we help her die ??? maybe ... maybe that was just what she needed ... the Grace of Reiki is always present ...

And a new experience from Shawn

TRAFFIC REIKI
Thanks for this newsletter Teri, i really enjoy hearing others experiences! I had a great experience driving with my wife on I-95 recently. The traffic was thick as it was a holiday weekend. Then we noticed the oncoming traffic stopped and became gridlocked. We drove past 4 lanes of gridlocked cars for the next 20 minutes and began to feel really grateful we were still moving, so we began to send Reiki to the gridlocked cars.

After a few minutes, I had the inspiration to directly ask the Angels and Spirit Guides of all the people i was passing to use me as a channel for Reiki for the highest good. I did this silently and gasped at the sudden increase in energy. I told my wife what happened and she silently did the same request and gasped in agreement at the increase in flow. We continued passing gridlock cars for another 30 minutes. This was some of the strongest Reiki my wife and I have ever experienced.

Since then i've adopted the mantra while driving "Angels and Guides, use me as a channel for their highest good" Ive also noticed that my Reiki is stronger when i have my favorite music playing and im singing along to it while intending Reiki to flow. Guess that keeps my head busy and out of the way so i become a cleaner channel.

~~Teaching Reiki~~

When I began teaching Reiki in 1996, I didn't know what to do about a handbook for my students. My Reiki Master Teacher had put together her own, but it mainly consisted of photocopies from books already published. Being a writer myself, this didn't feel right to me, so I settled for using the Arnold & Nevius book, The Reiki Handbook. It's a wonderful book for First Degree, but I found it to be too wordy for me. I like the idea of working from more of an outline so I can adapt to the energy of the class as I need to. And I didn't like just reading along with my students as I reviewed the book's material verbatim with them.

I wasn't sure I wanted to create my own handbook, nor was I sure I was qualified to do such a thing. After all, I was a newbie teacher and really needed to get some experience under my belt and develop my teaching style. So, for two years, I continued to use published Reiki books with my students, keeping notes of what I thought was important information for them to learn. By 1998, I felt ready to start piecing together my First Degree Manual.

Over the years, this manual has passed through various incarnations and has grown and matured right along with my teaching abilities. I feel good about it and get nothing but positive comments from my students. What I've found they've liked best about my manuals is the simplicity with which they're written. This doesn't mean they're light on information - quite the contrary - but I intersperse the text with colored pictures and examples. I give them an agenda to follow at the beginning of class, but we don't always stick to it. It's a guide for us so we can chart our course through the day, just as my manuals are guides for the information each student should receive.

I don't understand the phenomenon that says Teachers have to make their own manuals, and I've talked to some of you who feel almost guilty because you don't want to. When I started teaching, there was a limited number of books on Reiki that had been published. Today, the number has grown to around three hundred (at least, that's what Amazon says if you do a search there :o). If you're not the type of person who enjoys writing, or would rather put your focus elsewhere, then why bother when there are decent books now available for you.

I invite you to take a look at my Reiki Manuals at http://www.reikione.com/pubs.htm to see if they might work for you.

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue.

Last week's question came from Santosh: i want to ask you a few things about your experiences. I have had formal attunement of reiki a couple of years back. Since then i take out at least a few minutes.. maybe 1 or 2 some days to 5 odd minutes on others for reiki. But in spite of that, i am never able to concentrate on my act..even while performing reiki....that's the irony. can you please suggest me some remedies to my problem. at least as to how should i change my habits or maybe my daily routine to be able to concentrate better ...while performing reiki and on the whole as well.

Morgan: You are not alone in losing one's concentration while performing Reiki. A meditation called "Gassho" helps me a great deal. This is done prior to a Reiki session or teaching a class. I use a modified Japanese Reiki technique where you simply bring your hands together at the heart, breathe in the power symbol and with each exhalation, expand the power symbol throughout your body expanding it into infinity. I find this exercise very grounding and focusing.

Bonnie: she has a problem concentrating. She should give herself a full reiki treatment every day.......also, to clear mental confusion or busy mind....stand, or sit and keep both feet firmly on the floor, (ground), visualize a ball of bright orange...hold both hands on stomach for 5 minutes....that should clear your mind. I don't know what she means by giving reiki 1 or 2 min. a day??? You need to give more than that.....is she reiki 1 or reiki 2??? I would get a book on reiki and study that, and if she has a workbook ( I paid for mine at the class I took and it was well worth $25)......I refer to it often and I am reiki 2 for 8 years now. I hope this helps.

Kelly: Trying to stop the mind from wandering so that we can give our full attention to what we are doing, I think is a problem for everybody, whether they do Reiki or not. This is something that I am especially working on right now with good results although sometimes it is harder than others. Firstly, if you are only giving Reiki for 5 minutes at a time, then you aren't really giving yourself a chance to 'switch off' and relax. If at all possible, I would suggest that you devote more time to a Reiki session, and spend at least 5 minutes beforehand in a quiet space, unwinding from whatever it is that you have just been doing, stating your intention, asking the Universe for help, just being still. That way you will be in a much better space within to start your Reiki treatment from. There are many techniques that I often use not just for Reiki: following my breathe as it flows in and out, listening to the silence behind the day to day noises, imagining my whole body bathed in light. These can be done whatever you are doing and the more you do them, the quieter your mind becomes generally (they are also great ways to drift off to sleep). I also give thanks for the energy throughout a Reiki session; this reaffirms my connection and brings me back to what I am doing if my mind has wandered. I am currently reading an amazing book called 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle. It's a very important book about becoming fully present in the moment, turning off the mind and so much more. There are also many meditation books offering a variety of techniques, my favourite being 'Mindfulness Meditation for Everyday Life' by Jon Kabat-Zinn (published in the US as 'Wherever You Go, There You Are'). Perhaps you could join a meditation group which can be easier than trying to do it on your own. Best wishes and good luck.

Renee: If your intention is to bring Reiki healing to certain parts of the body, it will ... time is not important ... Reiki is about total relaxation and as a practitioner you will be relaxed too .. I am not sure if I understand what you mean by "I take out at least a few minutes.. maybe 1 or 2 some days to 5 odd minutes on others for reiki" ... do you mean distant healing ?
If that is the case, it might help you to get a Teddy Bear or use a big pillow and while you are placing your hands on the object, visualize the person you are treating ... this might help you focus better ...the subconscious mind tends to wander when relaxed ...

Next week's question comes from Rita: I recently received attunement over the internet. When I told a local reiki teacher how happy I was about this she scoffed and said this was not a real attunement and honestly said hands on is the only true way.I know there are two schools of thought on this. I feel the energy goes where it does the most good.I also believe I am able to use Reiki in my life in many ways. I guess I am looking for reinforcement of my thoughts. What do you think?

~~Just for Fun~~~

My husband submitted this joke, so go ahead and boo him if you feel the need!

The Truth About Women

A group of girlfriends are on vacation when they see a 5-Story hotel with a sign that reads: "For Women Only". Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in.

The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. "We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what's inside."

So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: "All the men on this floor are short and plain." The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.

The sign on the second floor reads: "All the men here are short and handsome." Still, this isn't good enough, so the friends continue on up.

They reach the third floor and the sign reads: "All the men here are tall and plain."

They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up.

On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: "All the men here are tall and handsome." The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor.

There they find a sign that reads: "There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman."
