~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

As I was reading the question/comments regarding the presence of mental illness and whether or not it should/should not preclude someone from practicing Reiki, I had several thoughts of my own being triggered.

Have you ever been criticized for not being able to 'cure' yourself of something? Say, a migraine. Or a stomach ache. Or even depression. And in the event of not being able to rid yourself of whatever was afflicting you, you turned to medication? Did this bring about feelings of inadequacy or failing from deep within? Thoughts similar to "Geez, I can't even help myself, how the heck can I help anyone else?"

Hard questions, aren't they? Or maybe, Goddess love you, you're a secure person who doesn't let negative self-talk affect you or your practice of Reiki.

I had never actually thought like this until one day my sister-in-law criticized me for having a headache. Granted, she doesn't believe in Reiki, but her smugness as she questioned my ability to heal myself threw me. This happened several years ago and it still comes to mind from time to time, even though at the time I explained to her it just didn't work that way.

Then, a few years ago, when I was in a severe depression, I was faced with the need to go on medication for it. My doctor understood my reluctance, my need to be holistic and natural in my treatment of myself, but he still recommended the SSRI. Before making a decision, I spoke to a dear friend and teacher about my struggle and my feelings that I should be able to 'fix' myself without meds. She took my hand, smiled, and told me she understood completely. She also said she had to make the same decision years before, when depression had shaken the very core of her being. She fought against it but in the end gave in. She shared with me it was the best thing she could have done for herself - that it was just another way of taking care of herself and self-healing, with the assistance of outside remedies.

In my friend's wisdom, I found peace. I remembered Reiki does not promise healing and no matter how I had wanted to heal myself, if it wasn't meant to be, it wasn't going to happen. The energy helped me to find closure in my decision to take meds, to know that it was perfectly okay, and that I wasn't less of a practitioner or teacher because of it.

The energy helped me remember its true purpose - its existence as a tool for healing, one of many we might find along our chosen path.

~~Reiki Experience~~

from Michelle: I was working on the heart chakra of a 74yr old client, we had never met before, this was her first treatment with me. She herself is a Reiki practitioner but has been inactive for awhile, she is planning to start practising again and take her Mastery later this year. I was working on a blockage between her heart and throat chakra, I started to feel incredible pain, I though I was going to have to leave the room and be sick but before I could my legs turned to jello and my knees started shaking uncontrollably. I felt like a wave crashed down on me and when I "woke up" I was on the floor. I felt very groggy and my brain was screaming at my legs to stand up, it took a great effort but I finally did. My client had not noticed a thing she was on the table in a state of complete relaxation. I took some deep breaths and regrounded myself, which I always do before I start a treatment but did again to get rid of some of the light headedness. I sat down and continued on with the treatment, everything seemed fine until I came to her Navel Chakra. I again started to get pain and feel like I was going to be sick, I felt my head become very heavy my legs even though I was seated were shaking and I said "please not again" to myself before it went all black. I came to, what I think was only moments later with my hands still in position on her Navel Chakra and my head resting on my arms. Still my clients lay unaware of what was taking place. I took some time to regain my composure and continued with the treatment. A while later when she was awake we talked about the blockage and her heart and throat chakras an worked on these areas some more. I had no other black outs or sick feelings. Once the session was finished she told me it was the best treatment she had ever had she felt completely relaxed, calm and energized. I had four other clients that day and I was fine with all of them. Has anyone ever had a similar experience and can tell me what that's all about? I am a young very healthy and active person who has never had any medical condition or fainted before. I am going to the doctor to see what he thinks however something tells me that this is a Reiki matter, something with the energy and whatever was going on between my client and I. No one that I have talked to seems to have any solid idea of what it could be. I would really appreciate any insight or information anyone may have.

REPLIES

Sandy: I might be able to help. I have problems with low blood sugar, and practicing reiki seems to deplete my blood sugar levels faster. I've had the same situation while working on someone, suddenly being overwhelmed with a wave of abdominal pain, nausea, jelly legs, and having to lay down on the floor, breaking out in a sweat. It was simply hypoglycemia--low blood sugar. I now make sure that I eat at least some small amount of protein shortly before I work on someone, and I keep trail mix in the car and in my purse in case I need something afterwards.

Linda: This is in response to feeling sick while working on her 74-year old client. I am a Reiki Master (also a Karuna Reiki Master and Lightarian practitioner). Being empathic all my life has led to many fainting spells, extreme pain, sadness, joy, and dis-ease on many levels. Of course I have learned how to ground myself, protect my energy field, etc. But sometimes I guess I either let my guard down a little, or the person's pain is especially strong and I pick up on it. When I participate in a Reiki circle with several other practitioners/masters, I rarely have a problem, but working on strangers with pain can really throw me for a loop. I have had backpain so bad that it was all I could do not to cry out myself. I don't know why some people connect so strongly and some don't at all.

I find that if I work at either the head or the feet, it works best for me. Scanning the body from head to toe gives me a feel for warm or cold spots, but my "visualization" skills are best for bringing in the energy at the head and pulling out the dis-eased energy from the feet.

Since I also do cranialsacral work, I start feeling the energy flow quickly if I am at the head. If the client has pain or a block in some area of the body, and I can release it or move it from the head, I don't feel the pain or sickness myself. If Michelle should find the same thing happening again, perhaps she could check her grounding anchors, ground a little deeper,
change her position, and visualize a healing blue (or any other color) light coming down from above and surrounding her, protecting her from taking on any of the client's pain or negative feelings. A few extra minutes before starting a session for implementing some extra protection for herself could make the difference.

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue.

Last week's question came from Mildred: I've so far read in two newsletters that "intuition" is the key, and I believe that true intention for the benefit of the person is good in whatever energy work is done. Now, I bumped into a friend of mine a few days ago who is a Reiki Master. We talked for a while and she told me that her ex husband is a also a Reiki Master - only problem is he is schizophrenic. So I asked her how could he practise Reiki being that he is this way and takes medication. Now before one jumps on me and reminds me about the film "A Beautiful Mind" allow me to say that I saw it and it's a wonderful movie about a scientist who worked with hard evidence. How does this work? How can a person whose energies are obviously on another level work with normal non medicating people? Should other people allow themselves to be treated by someone with that problem? Please let me know what you think.

Christine: Are Sylvia Brown, Jon Edward, and James VanPraugh also considered (labeled) schizophrenic because they have the "gift" of communicating with the other side? If this is the case, then anyone who is psychic or intuitive is a schizophrenic. I have been able to see, communicate, and play with spirits from other dimensions since childhood. These imaginary friends were very real to me. Because I was an only child, my family always said I had an overactive imagination. I thank them everyday that they didn't discourage me from playing with my friends or take me to a doctor to get me on meds for this problem. They, nor I, do not consider this a problem. I truly believe that those who are labeled with schizophrenia are just not ready to accept this gift and are not fully attuned to their abilities.

Sue: The answer for me is 'I don't know' My initial instinct is to say no someone with such a condition should not be offering such support to others. Your friends husband is vulnerable as well as those he is practicing on. But then again I am overwhelmed by the power of Reiki and know it to guard and protect me as well as It making me aware constantly that it is not I who is 'incharge' of the power. Reiki is a healing power that has no intellectual confines in order to make it accessible to everyone, with exclusion of everyone. so I guess my conclusion after this thought process is 'that spiritually I feel it is O.K, yet the 'earthly' being in me brings in some doubt and says no'.

Nunuk: Dear Mildred. I am going to be frank with you. And every one else. You are showing a classical opinion that comes out of prejudice. And this opinion, note this! is the hardest obstacle for the mentally ill Person to recover from. But this is an opinion that is shared throughout our western world. Did you know that in some Indian tribes the person who is showing signs of what we call mental illness are considered to be a holy person with close contacts to the spiritual world. Therefore the "ill" person is also treated as a holy person in these cultures. And in some cultures it is a conditional term (what we call to be a schizophrenic in the western world) to become a shaman. Also the percentage of people that recovers from mental illness is way greater in the third world than in the western world. I believe that the mentally ill are the ones that will benefit enormously from reiki. So please if you se someone who is walking down the street talking to themselves, send them some beautiful thoughts of love and light. They need it a lot. These people are often very lonely and misunderstood. We should, as members of the reiki community work against prejudice. On all planes. Reiki is for everyone. Also the weakest ones in this world. And truly the mentally ill are very weak and fragile. Did you know that the mentally ill person is absolutely normal when he is not psychotic. It is horrible to know what these people are being put through in the mental institutions. Not saying that we don't need mental institutions. But saying that it should be different in those places. Did you know that these people get so much sedative that after a short while their bodies literally falls asleep on a psychic level meaning that they lose all contact with themselves and their true feelings and thoughts. And that it takes very though therapies for their bodies to wake up again. These people also have normal beautiful feelings and thoughts of love and light in between their psychotic moments. I don't believe that mental illness has anything to do with reiki in the sense that they would be bad channels for reiki. What I have learned is that I myself have nothing to do with were the reiki is going, what it is doing to the person that receives the treatment. And that I am only a channel for the reiki energy nothing more. I cant interact with the process of giving reiki. It has it own will. Always for the highest good for the people involved. And I believe that a so called mentally ill person can sometimes be better at giving reiki because he is more sensitive than a "normal" person. And I am sure that if a "mentally ill" person is given the gift of being a channel for reiki then it is the will of reiki itself that he should have the gift. My advise is that if you meet someone who is mentally ill and have ability to channel reiki, and if you can put aside your prejudice about these people.and if you feel confident and secure with this person. Try to receive reiki from him. And if it don't feel right just don't do it. Please don't keep these people out of the reiki world. Reiki is for all beings. There are alot more that can be said about this topic.... Love and light to all of you.

Next week's question comes from Nicholas: I would like to know if anyone has any experience of the effects of reiki during childbirth? The information that I have came across has the mother stating that it was the quickest, easiest and most painless childbirth she'd had. The midwife also conformed the ease of delivery. This however was in 1942, and the only case I have heard of. Anything anyone can share would be warmly welcome. Many thanks, and may the light of the universe shine through us all at this time!

A mainframe computer on which everyone in the office depended suddenly went down. They tried everything but it still wouldn't work. Finally they decided to call in a high-powered computer consultant.

He arrived, looked at the computer, took out a small hammer and tapped it on the side. Instantly the computer leapt back to life. Two days later the office manager received a bill from the consultant for $1,000.

Immediately he called the consultant and exclaimed, "One thousand dollars for fixing that computer?! You were only here five minutes! I want the bill itemized!"

The next day the new bill arrived. It read, Tapping computer with hammer: $1
Knowing where to tap: $999
