~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

I received many comments on last week's column about combining Reiki, intuition (and a loose comment about Reiki Guides :o). Because there was so much response, I'm going to cut this column short this week so you can read on. If you have insight you'd like to share on the topic, don't hesitate to send it in! I really do love to hear from you.

One quick note - I'm offering a special discount to newsletter subscribers on the Artist Edition of 'The Reiki Teacher's Handbook.' Surf on over to http://www.reikione.com/pubs.htm if you'd like to check it out.

Have a wonderful week!

~~Reader's Corner~~

Here's what was shared:

Bonnie: On your editorial re the placements of hands during a healing, seeing guides etc. I too have always felt that I will be led to the placement of my hands during a healing, and that wherever I go is the "correct" thing for each individual client. I have experienced OOB when getting a Reiki treatment, and especially when acting as part of a Reiki Circle/Share. All kinds of guides come out to play! LOL I have always considered this not only normal - but great fun!

Libby: I was fascinated by Taggart King's piece and then reading yours... I have been an intuitive bodyworker longer than I've been Reiki, and my Reiki Master Teacher for Level I didn't encourage us to see Reiki as anything but the formal hand positions. I've always thought that my combination of formal hand positions and intuitive moves to concentrate on certain areas was "odd" and "just MY thing". How reassuring to find there's something called reiji-ho that is all about doing just that. My path to Reiki was first realizing that I tended to know just where to touch someone, where they were having something going on, my word for it was "interesting." I'd go toward where somebody's back, let's say, was "interesting." When I realized that I was doing this, I took Reiki I intending to have some more formal way to express this connection. What I found at that time was a bit TOO formal. Now that I'm Reiki II, my current Master Teacher (who, it happens, was my fellow student in my Reiki I years ago!) has Reiki Shares that full of intuitive bodywork, not to mention past lives and guides. I'm not totally at ease in that environment either, but I find it more spiritually enlivening than the Reiki Shares I used to go to.++++++++++++About the symbols: I've had a hard time connecting with them, especially with remembering the largest one, the Han-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen? I like the idea of using the symbols, and I guess I would benefit from some meditation and connection with them. Any tips on this?

MP: Just wanted to let you know that my Reiki teacher followed the same procedures you did. First we were taught the traditional hand positions, afterwards he encouraged us to follow our intuition and place our hands where we felt they needed to be. I have also experienced the same thing while giving someone Reiki. I can feel what is going on inside them. And when I mention something about the subject, they are very surprised that I know. After all ... Reiki brings you very close to the divine.

Paul: when i first heard of Reiki a friend of mine was attuned to level 1. he told me to stick with these certain hand positions. i started reading and searching out everything i could about Reiki. when i started out, i stuck with a standard hand position for a little while, even though i knew right from the beginning that the life giving energy was everywhere and in everything. and i knew that if i laid my hands anywhere, my intention to allow it to flow was all that was needed for it to go wherever it needed to go. but i still did the hand positions on my self. and, as you say, i have a much harder time following or sensing my own energy, unless something is very wrong. so now a days i mostly just Reiki my abdomen in the morning, and sometimes in different places as i feel i need to. but now its all intuition. on the other hand, when i do someone else, if i'm just doing a spot, or a quickie, i use intuition. if someone wants a treatment i use the "traditional" hand positions and just cover the whole body, front down, back up. i figure if i just do the whole person i got it covered. and as i do i listen, and feel what's going on. when it feels good i move on. so i use both the positions and intuition to do Reiki on someone. to end, i don't believe that any way is the wrong/right way, just different.

Beth: Thank you, Thank you! Thank you for your statement about guides. I have been attuned to Reiki for about 2 years now. I almost gave it up for a bunch of hocus pocus simply due to all the talk about guides and spirits. But because of the successes and experiences I've had, I have continued using it mostly for myself and my children. I believe in the science of Reiki, but I really have a hard time with what some are making as almost a religion of Reiki. Now granted that word - RELIGION - in itself denotes a lot of personal discord for me and maybe I am blocking out the spirits that guide us. But suffice it to say that I am extremely happy I am not the only one and I now feel I am part of the Reiki community.

Ken: I am a Reiki student(master) , I've been reading reikione for awhile and it has been a great benefit to many different areas of my Reiki practice. Currently I'm a PeaceCorp member serving in Central America. I have found that many people practice in many different ways according to their path. I have found that Reiki not only works for healing but it works in exploring Mayan temple ruins. I use the same sensing as when I channel the energy and images I receive are of the same quality as when Reiki flows into a body. In fact when I send Reiki to animals, plants, anything, I get impressions back
on health, integrity of structures.. ways to help. Of course I have taken the chance to expand the use of Reiki, but Reiki teaches me as I use it. The lessons learned are relative to my concept of life and healing. I suppose the point I am making is that life is full of variety and uniqueness and the Reiki energy adapts itself to that uniqueness in each of us. Its expression
as well as its use is for the highest good which is taken on faith based on a knowing, that cant really be defined.

JoAnn: I always get a reading of some kind during Reiki sessions with clients. It began in story form, unfolding as I completed the session. Sometimes now the versions are shorter and often symbolic but the client practically always sees or feels the same thing, or at least receives the same meaning, be it in the form of a color, words, visions, sounds or feelings of truth (a knowing). Most also get the feeling that someone else is in the room with us. (I do call on my spirit guides as well as the spirit guides of my client and ask if there is a message that the client needs help receiving). I also pick up what they are feeling in my body, in the same place. So when we discuss what went on we narrow it down to which chakra felt like what and take it from there. The few who don't see or feel the same thing can relate to my readings. Again, it usually is the feeling of an archetype or a symbol, not literal---sometimes like a wonderful fairytale. I never share anything of dark or low energy, as I only ask for help from the light and refuse anything else. I am also careful of what I say and often drop hints as to what I saw before telling the client to see if they pick up and speak of an experience similar. This cues me in that the client is ready to hear the rest of the story or either they finish the story themselves. Over the past few months probably 80% of my clients have some kind of emotional release after the session. From a tearful moment to sobbing. Reiki has truly brought new light into my life as well as others.

Pam: I am so happy to read your article on reading energy. I too will read the Reiki energy, and I always ask if the recipient wants me to share what I see. I call these Body and Soul Readings. Mostly I am able to see how our past lives relate to who we are here, in this time, but I've also been shown parallel lives. All of what I see is guided by Reiki, or at least Reiki is the tool I use to set things in motion. I start by reading the body, I never push, I just let it flow, and all their past lives unfold. Because Reiki is positive, so is the reading. The past lives are shared to aid in who they are now, to have an understanding of why we do the things we do, but all of what is shared is positive, helps for the soul to ponder. My feeling, also, is that Reiki is an open door for energy to flow through. And, if we are open to it, the information is shared.

Joe: We seem to be of like mind. I've been teaching the same way, as well... if you're not sure what to do, follow the "standard" hand positions for 3-5 minutes each. If you feel some intuition, or like your hands are being called or just "know" where to go, go with that. Regarding guides, I don't discount them for others, but have never tried to work with them myself.

Sharon: Thank you so much for the newsletters! I would like to comment on the use of intuition when doing Reiki. My Reiki teacher taught our class to use intuition. She also taught us that we are to allow the energy to flow through us, and to "listen" to or feel the energy, following it wherever it directs us. I always use the traditional hand positions, but I allow the energy to direct me to other areas if needed. I personally have no impression of who my guide is, and that is ok with me. I am fully aware that I am receiving guidance and that is all that is necessary for me to do the Reiki. Some of my fellow Reiki practitioners do know their guide and some can see auras. I'm not so inclined, but I appreciate each individual's gifts and style. Thanks for opening up discussion on these topics!

Anita: One word about Dr. Usui's Original Reiki Handbook. I LOVE IT. I highly recommend it my students. HOWEVER, I know Reiki Masters who are certified massage therapists who think it ought to be banned because of certain hand positions pictured and no warning about the danger of massage for people with certain preexisting medication conditions where massage could actually do harm. What I tell my students is to BE WISE. In our society, certain hand positions that are fine on a spouse are illegal for client use. No one will argue that massage is best done by a professionally trained and nationally certified massage therapist. This doesn't mean that massage wouldn't be beneficial, and any hand position can be performed without contact, above the area of concern. Perhaps if the editor would consider adding an appropriate precautionary statement at the beginning of Petter's book, more people would be willing to buy it and benefit from it. As for me, I will keep stocking it on my business shelves and recommending it for all levels of Reiki.

Stephanie: It is my firm belief that INTUITION is the most valuable tool to be used in Reiki. In this society we're all so used to "going with the flow", "doing as we're told" or "not rocking the boat" that it can be much more difficult than we could ever imagine to do something as simple as make a decision. And that's part and parcel of what evolution is all about, I think. Choice. We go through life making choices when we're NOT aware of it - even if it's just to bury our heads in the sand and let someone else lead us down THEIR path instead of firmly planting our feet on our OWN path and doing some real navigating. How much more liberating to do so when we actually KNOW what we really ARE doing... even if what we want to do is just NOT follow the rest of the herd! All that to say that while making a conscious choice to explore alternative and/or metaphysical thought and healing is ALWAYS a step or twenty up on the evolutionary ladder, we can still be mired in the muck of expectation and dogma when trying to begin that process. Healthy skepticism is one thing, but many of us go into the process of re-discovering our healing selves after listening to subjective experiences and opinions of others and then being disappointed or frightened when we don't experience exactly the same thing ourselves. I believe that HOW we learn is just as important as the learning itself. Allowing our intuition to guide us is key on both sides of that coin. Many practitioners are traditionalists, and they don't want to rock the boat out of fear or simple lack of experience in using their intuitive skill. And... if intuition isn't coming into play in a healing situation, then we're regressing back to
an "assembly line" frame of reference where everyone is the same as everyone else and we all cease to be dynamic, unique and precious individuals with different needs, impressions and ways of working and healing. That's not Reiki.

Taggart: I was interested to read your thoughts about intuitive working and the idea that this was a new discovery from Japan, described in Arjava Petter's book as Reiji ho. Certainly intuitive working is nothing new in the world of Reiki, but what is exciting about the 'Reiji Ho' technique is that it's teachable, and seems to work for everyone. So instead of sitting there hoping to become intuitive one day, it gives you a few simple steps to follow to deliberately open yourself to the intuitive side of things so that the energy guides your hands, rather like having your hands dragged around by invisible magnets. I teach Reiji Ho on my Reiki2 courses, and students are amazed to find that it works for them so quickly and easily, and once you have the firm belief that you are intuitive that opens lots of doors! It saddens me how rigid and dogmatic Reiki has become in some quarters, with students being told that they 'must always', 'should never', with rigid hand positions that should be followed in all circumstances, as if Reiki had to be practiced according to the 'one true way'. Reiki is beyond all that. I believe that we should take responsibility for our own practice of Reiki and not blindly accept what we are taught: we should work it out for ourselves, try things out to see what's possible, and find our own style rather than slavishly following instructions passed on by our teacher. No-one has all the answers when it comes to Reiki, it can be practiced in many different ways, and Reiki is a bit like a chameleon: it will adapt itself to our own way of working. Best wishes, and thank you for such an interesting newsletter. I really look forward to reading it each week. It must be a lot of hard work, but I'm very pleased that you are publishing it.

Kirsten: Just read your magazine and wanted to share my experience. When I was learning Reiki, yes, I was taught the basic hand positions. I was also taught that as I was giving a treatment, I could be thinking about my grocery list, etc. Well, I don't think so. When I first started working on people, I kinda/sorta tried to follow only what the standard pattern was. But it didn't take long before the energy let me know to just allow the flow. No two treatments are ever alike - because the energy is different each time. I am as you, and many others I'm sure, who "know" things when working with clients - I can sense it on some level, "see" things, but not necessarily with my eyes.

Morgana: How refreshing to read your comments on the intuitive placement of hands and also that you do not work with guides. I have tried very hard to "connect" with a guide because lots of people tell me that you do! but I just cannot seem to find one! They are probably around the place, but don't make their presence known. I also place my hands to wherever I intuitively feel they should go and don't follow the hand positions all the time. I feel quite comfortable doing this, as I wasn't taught to keep to a rigid pattern - I have had private attunements one on one from a very dear friend. On the issue of guides - I think it is important to be careful and not get carried away - just because they are dead doesn't make them intelligent! Last year, I heard a man speak on his healing practice, where he used a combination of Reiki and intuitive healing through guides. He gave a story about a woman who had come to see him complaining of difficulty getting pregnant. He began Reiki and then said he felt his guides pushing him out of the way, so they could continue the healing for him. He could see his guides put their hands inside the woman's abdomen - he asked her what she felt and she said "It feels just like someone is massaging my fallopian tubes". Personally I would like to know what that feels like ;) These kinds of claims worry me and I think lack credibility, which affects us all in the long term. I also witnessed the most blatant "acting" performance of some psychic "surgeons" at a fair last year - very scary stuff!

Joe: While I have used different forms of energy healing since the late 1960’s, in October of 2002, I received my Reiki II attunement. Every time I turned my Reiki on, to help someone, I am amazed that I no longer feel any feed back from them or experience their pain. This blessing continues by providing me some healing also. I found Reiki via massage, reflexology and family. I do no see auras or spirit guides. Often those that I am working with report seeing them. I have always had an inner sense that tells me where people are hurting and when they are in need of assistance. My sessions start when I turn the Reiki on (pain relief and physical healing most often). I start them out with a relaxation massage, transitioning to reflexology. I finish up with just Reiki, first where I feel they need the energy then the standard hand positions and I finally charka balancing. The whole process takes one to two hours. I have found that if I meditate and balance my charkas first, I am a better channel for the energy. Reiki is a blessing to me and to those I touch with it.

Barbara: thank you for this weeks magazine. I also recently received your second degree book & love it, I'm thinking of ordering the full monty package. Anyhow, about this week's reflections, I'd like to say that I support you in using intuition to guide you to an area to send Reiki to. this is how I was taught, but my RM also told us that others did not agree w/that philosophy. I can't imagine why not! At times, I can "feel" or sense things. One day I asked my client if she had something going on w/her digestion, as it felt kind of different over her solar plexus. She stated that she had eaten several oranges the day before & got bad acid reflux. Months ago, I had a client whose husband was cheating on her. She didn't want to admit it but knew something was going on. I sensed a large black area over her lower abdomen that felt very empty, like a large hole.

Elisabeth: I am replying to your findings about intuitive placement of the hands during a Reiki healing session. I believe that the traditional hand positions have their justification till the student/practitioner is sensitive and confident enough to listen to her/his intuition. My own experience is that only during my Reiki 1 training I used this positions because my teacher insisted on doing that. After that, I listened to my intuition, placed the hands directly to where they were needed, and my intuition even told me what was wrong with the client and why I should place my hands on a certain place. A year ago I started to see dark shadows where negative or blocked up energies were accumulated, and in case of physically developed cancer I even saw black energy. When I do distant healing I even see much more in the aura of a person, and
it always proved to be accurate so far. During attunements I often combine auric surgery with them when I feel guided to. I am in Austria (Europe). Yesterday I attuned a medical doctor in New Zealand who was usually very insensitive to energies, does not see the energies, but has great results with Reiki. When I opened his heart chakra to put in a symbol, a lot of negative energy debris (sorrow, frustration) poured out and I removed as much as I could with my astral hands. Later he told me that he could feel some sort of twitching and subsequent relief in the heart area the exact moment I was doing that. He also could pinpoint the moment I completed the attunement. And he saw a lot of colours! :-)))

Denise, on an earlier Discussion topic: In response to Kelly's question...I have always been taught by my RM that permission should be given when sending distant Reiki - of course, you needn't ask for it every time from the same person, and children (through my own experience) will pretty much take it at will. :) However, I make a point to ask permission, or offer the distant Reiki to the person in question. If it is a general situation, I simply send. Also, when sending Reiki, I was also taught a "prayer" of sorts to offer at the beginning of the session. " (person's full name), I bless the divine in you. This energy is given to you in love, whether you choose to use it or not. If you choose to use it, know that it supports your highest, most joyous healing." If I cannot obtain "permission" so to speak, I simply offer a prayer or blessing of safekeep. And really, that is not too far off the mark from Reiki after all.

Libby: Thanks for this e-zine. It keeps me in touch with Reiki at another level than working on myself or my few clients, or even going to Reiki Shares. I really appreciate all the resources you bring me in this format!

Teri (yes, i'm repeating myself from last week :o): Are you an artist? Do you Reiki? Watch ReikiOne for an upcoming addition - Reiki Artists Online. As I've expanded my creative self, I'm meeting many of you who are artists as well so I decided it would be wonderful to have a place to show our art and share our ideas. I'll be adding a homepage feature (fingers crossed here) where you can upload photos/scans of your projects for folks to check out and a bulletin board so we can talk. I'm also planning on coordinating some round-robins in different medias, which should be fun! If you're interested, drop me a note and I'll let you know when these changes are complete.

~~Reiki Experience~~

Elizabeth: There was a Native American Healer named Rolling Thunder. His methodology for accepting clients was to pray for 3 days and respond to the applicant on the 4th day. It is not always indicated for someone to be healed as through their dis-ease, they have a lesson to learn. If they are healed before the lesson is learned, the lesson will return, sometimes under worse circumstances than the original. I apply this to my clients. When I first became attuned I wanted to work on every one around me. It was at this time I ran across the book by Doug Boyd about Rolling Thunder. There is a woman in our group who had an inoperable brain tumor. She is a bright and shining example of a person in recovery so of course I wanted her well! As is turns out, Spirit's guidance indicated that it was indeed a part of her lesson, and of ours. Her perseverance in maintaining her sobriety through adversity has added to her beneficial example to the group.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KayC: when I went through my Reiki I and Reiki II attunements (with the same master) we got on to the topics of children. At the time I had none, but I wanted to know whether once I had my children, would they be born with it? I was told that we are all 'born' with the ability - it is only time and social pressures that hides the ability. I now have 2 boys aged 3 & 4, and I am very open with them about Reiki and other alternative therapies (Dowsing and Relaxation). When my 3yo wants comforting or healing he always comes to me and grabs my hands and puts them on himself, he then throws my hands away as quick as if they were hot potatoes when he feels he's had enough. Apparently their is a primary school in Melbourne that is full of children from Reiki parents, and when one falls over they all rush over to him/her and put their hands on them to help them stop hurting. The pure innocence of children is such a gift. It is just a shame that so many of us are socially un-attuned to what comes to us Naturally! If any of you have comments regarding Children and Reiki I would love to here them.
~~Up for Discussion~~
This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue.
Last week's question came from JoAnn: I have an issue that I'm sure some of your readers can help with. I have been asked to do a 10 minute television interview explaining Reiki. I have turned this down 3 times now and my employer, the Wellness Center of a hospital, is getting a bit anxious. My problem is I don't know what to say in layman terms. How do I break this down and yet be ready to answer questions from the interviewer who is notoriously "funny" (as in makes light of practically everything). Please don't give me hints. I already have plenty of those. I need word for word info. Knowing the importance of more people becoming aware of Reiki, especially in these times today, is the only reason I feel a need to go through with this. Thanks for all your help.
Libby: I would suggest going to many of the Reiki sites mentioned in the newsletter here and reading what people have put in writing and then picking from those what seems to fit for your experience. I've referred some of my prospective clients to: http://holisticonline.com/Reiki/hol_Reiki_home.htm which doesn't follow the way I practice exactly, but I has a nice tone. What I would say to any new clients is this: Reiki is a name for Universal Life Energy. I am a channel for this
Spiritual Energy. I have been attuned to the energy by a Reiki Master Teacher. Everyone has some access to this energy, but becoming attuned gives me a greater access to it. (I was told that attunement Reiki Level I opens the channel 4 times as big as the normal everyday access, and that Reiki Level II opens the channel 10 times more than that. Whew!) I flow the energy through my hands and into your body. We do this with your clothes on, but it helps if you can wear loose comfortable clothes. Most often I will touch you lightly, sometimes I may just hold my hands above your body. The energy goes wherever it is needed. I ask you to tell me about particular areas of your body that you've had difficulties with, so I'll be able to interpret better the intuitive understandings that come to me as I work. There is a system of basic hand positions that covers all of the major areas of the body. These basically correspond with the chakras. I may do a treatment that follows the system of hand positions on the front and back of the body, or I may follow my intuition and do some massage or gentle rocking on certain areas. Sometimes people feel a lot of heat during the session. Everyone who has worked with me has said that after the session they felt centered, calm and relaxed. I make no claims for healing powers of the energy, but I believe it helps. Reiki cannot be used for anything but good. After the session, it's a good idea to drink extra water. The energy often seems to flush out whatever is toxic to the body, and water is a good way to support that flushing. I hope that helps... It was good for me to actually write it down!
Shelley: I believe that none of us can really help you by telling you what to say or deciding whether you should do the interview. What I do in situations like this is ask whether it is in the Highest Good for the interview to take place. Sometimes I ask the question daily for several days. The answer is generally not a "yes" or "no" answer, but a point of wisdom that helps me make the choice. Deciding to do the interview also means taking responsibility for what may occur there. Recently, I have been channeling writing received from the Reiki guides which I find helpful. What I am getting on this is that you can present the subject of Reiki in a humorous way if you are exceedingly well prepared with your material. You may have to channel answers live and so it may be advisable to invoke the energy that you use prior to the interview.
Stephanie: I think the most important thing to get across to EVERYONE is that 'Reiki is just a word for something that we ALL contain: an enormous potential for healing ourselves and an enormous potential to open OTHERS up to THEIR potential as well. That is something, I think, that many practitioners miss as well. We get so wrapped up in the "mystery" or the "science" or the DOGMA of the Reiki "rules and regulations", that the ease and simplicity of it all has been lost. For those simply interested in a healing session, INTENT and INTUITION are the two key words here. The practitioner has a clear sincere intent that healing occur on whatever level and in whatever form necessary for the greater good of everyone involved (allowing intuition to guide them as they go through the laying hands process), and the recipient simply must be open to receive and allow their OWN energy to work through blocks that are affecting their healing process. At best, any Reiki master is simply the catalyst by which someone else comes to know their innate healing self more effectively, and an attunement is one of the tools used to create that scenario. But, there isn't anything magickal about the attunement. As I said, it is a tool. (IMPORTANT: This is not and should not be a scenario in which a "master" deems you worthy either by your knowledge, class or bank account.) The point is for the recipient to choose to receive the attunement and the attun-ER to have a clear sincere intent of what it is they are doing. After that, technique is secondary. And in the end, 'reiki' is just one of MANY valid ways to explore your innate healing potential. Practitioners tend to deify reiki when the energy itself is what matters above and beyond the label itself.
Maggie Batt: For Joann...You should definitely do the 15 minute television gig. I have just recently filmed a reality-tv documentary called Health Cops: New Orleans. I've had the opportunity to be a Health cop to a local lady and to change her life in 12 weeks. I was cast as the "alternative practitioner". I used Reiki, Yoga, herbs, spiritual consultations, flower
essences, breathwork, feng shui, kitchen witchery and much more. One of the first scenes we filmed, I gave a Reiki treatment. You can imagine my excitement, that now all of America can learn about Reiki and see the changes in this lady for themselves. The best way to describe it in layman's terms can be as follows: "Everything is made up of energy, (people, plants & animals, etc.). There are many ways to channel this energy into your body, (breathwork, tai chi, yoga)--Reiki is one of those ways. When a practitioner is attuned to this energy, he/she can channel it and lay their hands on the receiver's energy centers (chakras). It can then revitalize and clean out their energy systems. This can effect the recipient on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. "
Next week's question comes from Yvette: Do any of have information on doing a space clearing? A gal I worked with just moved into a new apartment, and she is having nightmares. I wanted something simple that we could do together to make her feel more secure and make sure it is not the leftovers from the previous tenant that she is picking up on.
~~Just for Fun~~~
DAMN KIDS! (one of my favorite sayings :o)
A farmer in the country has a watermelon patch and upon inspection he discovers that some of the local kids have been helping themselves to a feast.
The farmer thinks of ways to discourage this profit eating situation. So he puts up a sign that reads, "WARNING: ONE OF THESE WATERMELONS CONTAINS CYANIDE!
The farmer returns a week later to discover that none of the watermelons have been eaten, but finds another sign that reads: "NOW THERE ARE TWO!"
