~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

Recently, while working on my new Reiki manuals, I was reading through Petter's "Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui." I thought I might find some information I wasn't sharing with my students that I could add to my training books. What I discovered was the described practice of transcending the traditional Reiki hand positions and allowing our intuition to guide us during a treatment. Petter spoke of this as a wonderful discovery. While I don't disagree, I have to admit I was a little perplexed by the 'discovery' part. You see, I've been teaching my students to follow their intuition for years now. I have them learn the standard positions and practice them; then I encourage those I teach to trust their instincts once they feel comfortable with the energy - to go with the flow, so to speak. My Reiki Master Teacher taught in a similar way as well.

I've had some discussions with several Reikis online this past week concerning this concept and have found many don't go outside of the standard treatment guidelines. Many have been told in no uncertain terms NOT to go outside of the standards by their teachers. Considering the very nature of Reiki, its ability to enable growth and healing, it would seem the opposite would be true. That as we become accustomed to the channeling of the Universal Life Energy, we'd develop the sensitivity to follow its course in our body and in our client's.

Something else I've discovered the last few years - when I treat someone with Reiki, I can 'read' them. I don't see big aura colors (though sometimes little sparks fly by) and near as I can tell there are no guides lurking about (but then, I've never been big on the idea of Reiki guides - go ahead and write me about this - I know you want to :o). It's similar to how I read Tarot or palms - I just know what's going on with them. I feel it in my gut and when I speak it out loud to my client, there's always a strange tingle that goes through me when I know I've hit on something. I don't share with everyone who comes to me, as not everyone wants to know what I pick up. I always ask before the treatment if they'd like to know what I 'see' and leave it up to them.

I'm curious to hear what you think about this idea - the intuitive use of Reiki and the reading of energy patterns as you treat someone. Perhaps you can read your own energy patterns as well when doing self-treatment, but I find I'm much too close to that subject to be objective. Or maybe you are most comfortable following the traditional guidelines for treatment. There is no right or wrong here - just a sharing of ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.

Bright blessings to you this coming week.

~~Reader's Corner~~

Teri: Are you an artist? Do you Reiki? Watch ReikiOne for an upcoming addition - Reiki Artists Online. As I've expanded my creative self, I'm meeting many of you who are artists as well so I decided it would be wonderful to have a place to show our art and share our ideas. I'll be adding a homepage feature (fingers crossed here) where you can upload photos/scans of your projects for folks to check out and a bulletin board so we can talk. I'm also planning on coordinating some round-robins in different medias, which should be fun! If you're interested, drop me a note and I'll let you know when these changes are complete.

Kelly: Last week I put forward a question about sending Reiki to unknown recipients that might not be wanted. The responses that came back were all different, do you think that this is an area that needs clarification for Reiki practitioners generally? Nevertheless, I was reassured by the responses that I am doing the right thing and would like to thank you for providing the opportunity for us all to communicate and share ideas.

Suzanne, on last week's Reflection article by Taggart: I have been Attuned to Usui, SS, Karuna Masterships, as well as Lightarian I & II. I also do Huna, these all being "energy" work. However, I had stopped using the symbols for some time, even before some of these Attunements. I have great results. Ok, you can say well they were put in you at the time, even Reiki I you receive them, but not in the hands. However, before I Attuned my mother to Reiki II, her hands got hotter than my did! My thought, we were promised this ability, the Attunements as well as the symbols are really to give you the confidence that you can do this. One night a wk a few of us meet at my house and there is one woman who is not Attuned to anything, she has much energy coming out of her, no doubt. "Faith will prelude the Miracle", have faith you can do this and there it is!

Chris, on last week's Reflection: On the subject of hand positions, I have been asking questions about this myself (reiji - ho). You may like to check out the lively discussion on http://www.healthypages.co.uk then go to discussion forums and then scroll down to Reiki. Taggart and others have put in their views on how to do reiji ho intuitive hand positions

Donna, on an earlier Discussion topic: It is my understanding that Reiki always goes to the highest good of all concerned! I do not believe that it can do any harm. I do believe that it helps to heal. Maybe sometimes not as gently as we wish, or with the outcome that we wish, but still to the highest good. Anytime that I feel that I have been drawn to send Reiki to someone "just because", I always state the intent that " if their higher self accepts this Reiki please let it go to them, and if not, please let it either return to me, or pass through to someone who they are in contact with who needs it and accepts it. This way you are never interfering with someone's will or path in life.

Bonnie, on the same Discussion topic of sending Reiki distantly: Yes, we are channels for Reiki and not the source, the source being divinity. This is the reason to ask questions. I have seen a lot of harm done when people stop asking questions and do it just because. Giving Reiki to people/animals/events who don't want it, need it, or fear it causes harm." Asking questions puts us in the mode of working from the mind, and not from the heart. If we are led, for whatever reason, to give Reiki, then there is a reason, and we need not understand it. We are channels - outside of the process, while at the same time part of it. Not wanting Reiki, not needing Reiki, fearing Reiki - these are all processes of the mind. I work from the understanding that Reiki will only be accepted to the level that the person/animal/issue will accept it. In no way can Reiki ever cause harm.

Gail, on sending distantly: When I was attuned to Reiki II, I was told that you could send Reiki as a beautiful gift. So I send it wrapped in lovely paper with a giant pink bow, and leave it at their doorstep, to accept or not, as they wish.

Article: The Sound of Reiki Music by David Gleekel

For reiki practitioners and singers among the reiki people who read ReikiOne, I have a suggestion for an exercise that might be fun (and could become a part of your self-healing rituals).

I have been doing it (in the shower) for the past year and find it VERY powerful.

You start off with an OMMMMM. You then chant the Power symbol or, if you don't know that yet (OOOOO...as in Pool). You then switch to the Emotional/Mental symbol or, if you don't know that yet (EYYYYYY as in Play). You next switch to the distant healing symbol, or if you don't know that yet, AHHHHHH as in Pot).

Repeat the above chanting in a series of three...it takes just under 10 minutes for me, just enough time to wash up in the shower, enjoy the sound, wake up, and totally ground myself. You can also add hands-on reiki while you are doing this.

It is wonderfully transformative and clearing.

Om Shanti Om.

~~Reiki Experience~~

Madge: I have recently been led to cancer patients and have been wondering. My hubby died of cancer of the pancreas and would have loved reiki. my wondering is about when you work on someone with cancer . Do you spend an hour with them? I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this topic (send any thoughts to teri@reikione.com)
~~~~~~~~~~
Tanya: I've had a few close relatives who had cancer. One summer I was called to a woman's house to give her Reiki for her cancer. The first session was amazing...I could feel the toxins from the chemo leave her body and her legs regained circulation. She was so happy, and started crying, saying, "I needed you so badly". She found that the Reiki helped her sleep after I left and she felt better for 1 or 2 days after that. She was bedridden and could not turn over, so I improvised.
As her cancer got worse, she got very restless. I had to cut the session short a few times due to her discomfort and sometimes felt frustrated because I really wanted to help her. What I found helped is when someone is very sick, to 'beam' the Reiki to them from a distance. At that point, I knew she was transitioning and needed the Reiki to soothe her spirit, rather than help her physically. As she was losing her physical strength, I could feel her spirit get stronger and stronger. Sometimes watching someone transition can be a beautiful experience. It may sound strange, but when you feel their heart chakra grow and grow before they pass on, it comforts me.
~~Up for Discussion~~
This column features a different question each week for your musing, opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next issue.
Last week's question came from Jen: I was recently attuned for Reiki II. ( about 2 mos. ago) Since then so many issues have surfaced and I am feeling completely overwhelmed by it all. Some of my closest family members have also experienced a lot of difficult issues lately. Could all this be related to Reiki? If so, what can I do to make the process smoother for all of us? Thank you for any advice you may be able to give.
Kelly: The difficulties that your family members are experiencing right now seem to be the perfect opportunity for you to use the Reiki II that you have just been attuned to. Even if you are all sharing the same house, you can still send them distance healing and use the symbols that you have learnt for both distance and hands-on healing. Given that you all live close together you will actually get to see the results for yourself.
Ruth: Regarding Jen's question about 'turmoil' after her level 2: While Reiki is a tremendous tool for self-healing, there are times when sessions with a good Reiki practitioner are called for. It may be something that is needed only periodically, or something that you will want to do on an ongoing, regular basis as you move forward along your path. The assistance of an objective, trained Reiki healer can be very very helpful.
Next week's question comes from JoAnn: I have an issue that I'm sure some of your readers can help with. I have been asked to do a 10 minute television interview explaining Reiki. I have turned this down 3 times now and my employer, the Wellness Center of a hospital, is getting a bit anxious. My problem is I don't know what to say in layman terms. How do I break this down and yet be ready to answer questions from the interviewer who is notoriously "funny" (as in makes light of practically everything). Please don't give me hints. I already have plenty of those. I need word for word info. Knowing the importance of more people becoming aware of Reiki, especially in these times today, is the only reason I feel a need to
go through with this. Thanks for all your help.
~~Just for Fun~~~
from White Song Eagle
The Wisdom of a Navajo Woman
A saleswoman is driving home in Northern Arizona when she sees a Navajo woman hitchhiking. Because the trip has been long and quiet, she stops the car and the Navajo woman climbs in.
During their small talk, the Navajo woman glances surreptitiously at a brown bag on the front seat between them.
"If you're wondering what's in the bag," offers the saleswoman, "it's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband."
The Navajo woman is silent for a while, nods several times and says, "Good trade."
