~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

This week - guest columnist Taggart King

Symbols and Attunements
© Taggart King October 2000

In my article 'Symbols and Beyond' I spoke of the possibility of moving
beyond the Reiki symbols to access the energy they represent directly, and
the use of symbols from other cultures to direct the energy: Moslem prayers
and Christian symbols for example. Here I want to talk about an exciting
discovery for Reiki: you don't have to be attuned to the symbols for them to
work for you!

It has always been a basic tenet of Western Reiki that the Reiki symbols
don't work until you have been specifically 'attuned' to them, and all
Western style attunement systems - as far as I can see - involve being
attuned to symbols at First Degree, Second Degree and Master levels.
However, no one really knew if you needed to be attuned to the symbols for
them to work, because no one knew of a way to attune people without using
symbols!

All that has changed with the introduction of 'Reiju' empowerments from
Japan. Reiju is the way that the Reiki ability is conveyed to the students
of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Mikao Usui's Reiki Association), and within
other traditional Reiki streams in Japan. Reiju is an empowerment that seems
to derive from Tendai Buddhism, and within Japanese Reiki does not involve
the use of symbols at First Degree, Second-Degree or Master levels. Now that
we know how to connect people to Reiki without using symbols, and without
'attuning' people to symbols, we can at last find out whether one needs to
be attuned to a symbol for it to work for us.

I have experimented in three ways. Firstly, I have found that students
attuned at First Degree level, using Western-style attunements, can produce
noticeable effects in their hands when using the Reiki symbols.
Western-style Reiki First Degree attunements use the Reiki symbols, of
course, but you are not 'attuned' to them in the way that you are at Second
Degree level.

Secondly, I have found that the symbols work just as well for First Degree
students who are connected to Reiki using Reiju empowerments, and no symbols
enter into this process at all. In fact, I have noticed that students
attuned using Reiju seem to be more sensitive to the flow of Reiki than
students attuned in the Western style.

Finally, I have been using the original Usui method to attune people to
Reiki at Second Degree level, and this again does not use symbols: it uses a
way of connecting students directly to the energies that the symbols
represent. Students attuned in this way can use the Reiki symbols in just
the same way, and just as effectively, as students attuned using the Western
system. although they have not been 'attuned' to them.

So all this leads me to believe that once you have been connected to Reiki -
and symbols do not need to enter into this process - then the Reiki symbols
will work for you, and you do not need to be attuned to them specifically.
Not only that, but I believe that any symbol will direct the energy in a
particular way once you have been attuned to Reiki: Usui's chosen symbols
which come from Shintoism and Tendai Buddhism, but also symbols from other
cultures and traditions, and channeled symbols too.

So the symbols generate different aspects of the Reiki energy, symbols from
other cultures represent different facets of the energy, and you can - if
you wish - move beyond the symbols entirely and use direct intent. Intent is
a lot more important than we realize, which is liberating!

~~Reader's Corner~~

LJ on an earlier Discussion topic: Bonnie's response to last weeks question
has sparked a point of discussion and I want to respectfully respond. If we
are drawn to give Reiki, to whomever, wherever, then we need to honor that.
We need not question why. We are the channels for Reiki, not the source. The
Universal Source knows what is needed, and when, and where. I disagree
with this, we should always ask the question "why" along with the question
"what is my intent". Two simple questions, and when we are honest with
ourselves the answers to these questions are not always what we expect.
Yes, we are channels for Reiki and not the source, the source being
divinity. This is the reason to ask questions. I have seen a lot of harm
done when people stop asking questions and do it just because. Giving Reiki
to people/animals/events who don't want it, need it, or fear it causes harm.

Jean-Ann: Do you have any information about healing circles taking place in
Southern Indiana? Any information regarding the Scottsburg, New Albany,
Clarksville, Jeffersonville, Henryville, Salem areas would be most
appreciated. (send any info to teri@reikione.com and i'll post it here).

Sharon: Just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your newsletter so much! I
had my Reiki one training 3 weeks ago (had a lot of uncomfortable things
clear out) and was very comforted by all the info you had available. Six
months ago, I had never even heard of Reiki. I'm still in wonder of it,
trying to figure it out, & loving every minute of it. There are so many
questions - that will never end though, will it? Your newsletter has been
very helpful, reassuring & informative. Thank you!

Kathy: Just wanted to say I love your newsletter. Thank You for putting in
this beautiful effort to keep us all connected to each other and our energy
work. It certainly helps me keep up with the many questions that cross my
path.

Michelle, on an earlier Discussion: I have just been reading another one of
your amazing news letters and would like to say to Yasmin on the hand
positions debate. All are at there own level and are right in there own
mind. There is no right or wrong way there just Is. Read the books, hear the
words but go the path you feel is true to you. If you are unsure of which
path ask your higher self. Perhaps the reason we have been given the hand
positions is to work on any blockages that might arise from both directions
of it. Or it may be in doing it this way you are keeping the body a little
more balanced energy wise and not depriving the rest of the body a dose of
positive white light. There may be a 101 different reasons for the hand
positions, but just go with what feels true to you. ("for the good of all")
remember We all need to start somewhere and these hand positions make a good
solid foundation for us to build on and to grow into what ever shape we feel
is just so for us. As with everything about Reiki it is a solid foundation
to help us grow with the love and light of the universe to finally become
one again.

Comments? Suggestions? Complaints? They don't have to be about the
newsletter, just about Reiki or other healing topics. Be heard! Send them

~~Reiki Experience~~

Chad: I've been reading your newsletter for about 6 months now, about the
time that I was first Attuned to Reiki, and I've been wanting to share an
experience with you and the rest of the Reiki community that had happened to
me back in October when I was Attuned to the Master Level. During the
Attunement process with my Master, she had begun the process, and
my mind seemed to pause. All around me my Spirit Guides came forth, each
standing in a particular place, as her own Spirit Guides did the same behind
me. They then all opened their hearts to me, and I saw beams of silver
Light connect from their hearts to my own, filling me up with an amazing
Energy that has kept me charged ever since. During the process, each of my
Guides stood before me and vowed to help teach and guide me, bonding
themselves to different ideas: Loyalty, Strength, Courage, Valor, Honor,
Love, and Compassion. They have also had me uphold such virtues in my work
as a Reiki Master. Then they all bonded once more to me, both her Guides
and my own, and as the experience concluded, so did my Master's Attunement
process, both at the same time. I've carried the experience with me ever
since.

CeCe: Received your email today which was of interest to me, as I live in
an Assisted Living Facility where I am undergoing Reiki Sessions......my
compressed squash fracture of the 12th Vertebra is still in the healing
process, which has been very painful......I have taken two sessions of the
Reiki and you can't imagine the improvement the sessions have given
me....actually, I dropped the pain pills and can stand the pain without them
now...am looking forward to my next session....
Just thought, I would share my Reiki experience with you..... God Bless
Reiki and its Members!

Madge: I have recently been led to cancer patients and have been wondering.
My hubby died of cancer of the pancreas and would have loved reiki. my
wondering is about when you work on someone with cancer . Do you spend an
hour with them? I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this topic (send
any thoughts to teri@reikione.com)

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing,
opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next
issue.

Last week's question came from Kelly: I often send distance healing to
people I don't know: people or situations I hear about, friends of friends,
etc. I am aware that people don't always want to receive healing. I really
don't want to send it where it is not wanted and I certainly don't want the
karma that would result from doing that. Before I send healing, I usually
mentally say to myself something like, "This healing is to be received by
.... only if they wish to receive it. Take as much or as little as you
want, pass it on to someone else who does want it or send it back", or words
to that effect. Is this enough? On the other hand, as Reiki has its own
intelligence, is this issue taken care of for us? I would like to hear
other peoples thoughts on how they resolve this issue when distance healing
and any other methods they use.

Reikimaster Hedberg: In response to Kelly's question about sending out
Reiki to unknown recipients... I always say "If this Reiki energy is not
accepted or wanted here please send it where it will be most needed and
accepted". This eliminates second thoughts about sending Reiki or creating
a negative situation and benefits will still be achieved somewhere in the
universe. I always teach this to my students as well. Hopefully this idea
will be spread far and wide so one day ALL can benefit from Reiki's healing
energy!

Taggart: When we carry out Reiki treatments we are not imposing our will on
the recipient, we are not 'pushing' our preferred solution onto the
situation, we are not 'making' the person get better; when we do Reiki we
intend that the energy does whatever is right or appropriate for the person,
and the results are out of our hands. This is no different when we send
distant Reiki. If it isn't appropriate for the recipient to get some benefit
then they won't, no matter what we do. So I have no problem in sending Reiki
to someone who hasn't asked for it, because I'm not imposing the energy on
them. Imagine that someone has just been knocked down by a car and they are
bleeding profusely in front of us. Would we (a) agonise about whether our
desire to help them is all about our ego and something for us to resolve for
ourselves (b) worry whether the person is destined to bleed to death and we
would be interfering with their karma by intervening (c) act in a
compassionate way and help them... we would act in a compassionate way, a
natural way, and why should this be any different with Reiki. In fact I
believe that whenever we think of someone in a loving way then *dzzzt* we
have just sent them Reiki, so to avoid sending Reiki to someone we would
have to telephone them to get their permission before we thought of them,
but to telephone them we would have to think of them...! So don't worry,
Kelly, your intent is fine.

Sandy: I was taught at my Level Two class that we were never to send reiki
unless the practitioner had definitely gotten permission or a request to
send. It seems to be a matter of honoring and not interfering with someone
else's karma. Situations would seem to be another matter, especially if "the
highest and best good" was requested.

Next week's question comes from Jen: I was recently attuned for Reiki II.
( about 2 mos. ago) Since then so many issues have surfaced and I am
feeling completely overwhelmed by it all. Some of my closest family members
have also experienced a lot of difficult issues lately. Could all this be
related to Reiki? If so, what can I do to make the process smoother for all
of us? Thank you for any advice you may be able to give.
