in the context of industrial quality control or personal development. Kaizen
is a Japanese word that is usually translated as 'improvement', but it means
more than that. The word has connotations of continuous, gradual, orderly
and never-ending improvement, the willingness to constantly, relentlessly
pursue improvement a small step at a time. The application of the kaizen
principle is the reason why Japan's economy was transformed after the Second
World War.
towards the end of the Reiki precepts. The line in Japanese is "Shin shin
kaizen, Usui Reiki Ryoho", which could be loosely translated as "Mind body
change it for better Usui Reiki method". So when Usui was talking about
using his system to improve the body and mind, I get the impression that we
are looking at a lifelong commitment to work with the system, to dedicate
ourselves to developing our effectiveness as a channel, to focus the energy
on ourselves again and again, long-term, in order to produce small
incremental improvements. But small changes build on previous small changes,
an enhancement upon an enhancement leads to amazing transformation over
time. And Usui's original system gives us the solid, concrete techniques
that we can use to develop ourselves over time: as channels, in terms of
spirituality, in terms of intuition, to produce our own individual Reiki

continuous and never-ending improvement to our practice of Reiki? Here are a
few suggestions.
s death by some of his students, comes a series of energy exercises called
'Hatsurei Ho'. This phrase means something like 'start up Reiki technique'.
It consists of a series of energy meditations/ visualisations that focus on
your Tanden (Dantien) and which are designed to be carried out every day.
The cumulative effect of doing these exercises day after day after day is to
gradually increase the clarity of your channel, and to allow you to grow
spiritually. The exercises take maybe 12-15 minutes to carry out each day,
and can be fitted into the busiest of schedules if the will is there. We can
all make this time for our Reiki practice.
you carry out the Western 'hands-on' method of treating yourself, or use
Usui's original self-treatment meditation, you should focus the energy on
yourself on a regular basis. We prefer to use the self-treatment meditation
because it seems more intense and versatile. Usui's system was all about
spiritual development and self-healing, so Hatsurei Ho and self-treatment
can lie at the heart of your Reiki practice.
up again and again over a long period of time. Part of your training
involved receiving simple spiritual empowerments, repeatedly, at all levels.
Each empowerment reinforced your connection to the source, cleared your
channel, allowed you to develop spiritually and enhanced your intuitive
potential. To echo this practice, Taggart sends out a distant Reiju
empowerment every week, on a Monday, which can be 'tuned in to' by any Reiki
person.
positions that you had to apply to everyone you treated. Usui's method was
simpler and more elegant. You allowed the energy to guide your hands to the
right place to treat, different from one person to another, and different
within the same person from one treatment to another. The way we have been
taught to do this is through a 'technique' called 'Reiji Ho' (indication of
the spirit technique'), a way of emptying your mind and merging with the
energy, getting your head out of the way to allow intuition to bubble to the
surface. The exciting thing about Reiji Ho is that it works for everyone,
and with time - we come back to kaizen's small incremental improvements -
your hands will move more quickly, more consistently, and you will start to
attract more intuitive information. So every time we treat someone we should
spend time cultivating our 'Reiji' state of mind, and gradually, gradually,
we develop.
system didn't involve symbols, as far as most of his students were
concerned. They were expected to carry out meditations to learn to
experience the different energies. At Second Degree, by becoming earth ki
and heavenly ki again and again, for example, these energies became part of
their being. Once an energy becomes part of you, you can connect to it
direct without having to use a prop like a symbol. Usui provided some Shinto
mantras that could be used to invoke the energies, but even these could be
moved beyond with time. In my last article 'A Simple Way with Symbols' I
describe a meditation for becoming these energies. Use this regularly to
become the energies of Reiki.
practice of Reiki. We do not need to be perfect, we do not need to beat
ourselves up for not applying each and every principle all the time, but by
dedicating ourselves, and by forgiving ourselves, and by trying to do a
little better each day than we did the day before, we transform ourselves.

a reiki master it is wonderful to see so much feedback about reiki and
energy work as a whole. I study parapsyhic science and are currently working
on my PhD. I also attended massage school and I have practiced reiki for
many years and enjoy continuing my education in the field of holistic health
and science. With all that I have been called to connect people with
alternative resources. After 14 years at a job I felt it was time to go.
Live my purpose and connect. While in the past year on my own and making my
own company I have suffered financial loss, I have produced New England
Natural Living & Wellness Expo and Retreats, as well as the U.S. Reiki
Connection. Putting all of my own money in these events have empted my bank
accounts but certainly have filled my heart. The events have also
contributed to many other businesses success. Many people ask me how I can
do so much for no money. And sometimes when the bills are really late I ask
my self why not go back to the 9-5 life. Then my daughter comes home from
school and its perfectly clear, and then I get a call from a reiki client or
someone I have touched in other ways gives me a call. My newest challenge
is creating a network of reiki practitioners in the U.S. I talk to hundreds
even thousands online looking for ways to connect. Please feel free to
share this letter with readers and my website at anytime. There are many
free resources too! www.AlternativeBalance.com I am also having the first

thoughts and experience with intention differ slightly. I do believe that
one can be thinking about their groceries while giving a Reiki treatment and
it will not effect the quality of the reiki energy. what can be missed is
understanding and the opportunity to share something the receiver needs to
hear. Yet, this is relatively minor. The important thing is to remember
that the healer is the one receiving the Reiki. when we get caught up in
thoughts about healing the person it is as if we extend another stream of
energy to them. Only, this other stream is not the high vibration of reiki
but rather our own personal energy which may not be at a high enough level
to NOT allow an energy drain or worse. Especially, if our personal intent
to heal another being involves fear of their illness, fear of reiki not
working, fear of appearing a charlatan, fear of the suffering...Fear is low
level energy that can definitely allow unpleasant energetic feedback. So,
to be present and aware but dispassionate about this work of love that we
are gifted to share, I teach my students to let their attention rest in
their hands, or on the sensations the may feel, on breath patterns, on the
symbols, on love or joy, or the truth of the clients rich, whole, happy, and
powerful being , despite any appearance to the contrary. I find that any of
these tricks/techniques/technologies (isn't justification through language
wonderful...:) ) put me in a place where I can be most beneficial to the
healer (the client) and myself. All love multiplies itself and returns as
it expands.

receiving Reiki, it is possible that you may feel acute pain in your back in

indicative that your Kundalini has been touched. At this stage, if you do
not want to have sexual intercourse, you can transform this energy to a
higher consciousness energy by doing the Energy Circulation Exercise as

Mildred: I am very new to your website but find it very interesting and
informative. I have never taken a Reiki course and never knew anything
about it until I started having dreams with myself doing hand passes to
others, and began to see symbols floating around peoples heads and neck
area, especially where the thyroids are located. My sister told me she
believes I might have unconsciously tapped into the Reiki system and that
perhaps I should get some formal training. I decided to ask your opinion. I
have looked up some of the available symbols on the web and one or two look
the same, but not all. Please do give me your opinion. (ed. note: if

and goes to wherever it is needed most. Then why do we use certain hand
positions? Surely if you just placed hands on a recipient's shoulders the
Reiki would flow to where it was needed? This has always confused me and my
fellow Reiki masters here in the UK have not been able to shed any further
light.
where it is needed because the energy is consciously intended to go where we
direct it. We are only a channel remember. We are directing it to go to
specific places on the body. The energy is balanced when it is distributed
evenly on the different positions. Why do we have settings on electrical
equipment? The electricity flows no matter what. To control how much is
given. If the toast in the toaster is only directed to the top of the toast.
It will be burnt and overcooked.
bothering handpositions at all ? Imho, it is not merely a matter of
'thinking' (being told), but also a matter of 'feeling'. You can give Reiki
starting from the classic handpositions; using alternative handpositions;
according to your intuition or using only one position. All these ways work
well, assuming you work with the right intentions. But, I'm sure you must
have already experienced the warmth and tender energy when receiving Reiki !
A Reiki treatment is like a huge gift you can enjoy, and when people move
their hands all over your body, it just feels so great ! My experience is
that this method makes these fine sensations and feelings more 'explicit'
than the 'one position' method. Could this have to do anything with the
strength of the Reiki-flow being greater close to the hands ? When you give
Reiki yourself, and you like to use your intuition, it's easier to
distinguish feelings when moving your hands over the body. Sensations can
show more clear. But then again, it all depends on your intuition, doesn't
it ? When I give Reiki, I often feel tension or pain when holding to long
on to the same position, especially with people who feel more comfortable
when I don't lay my hands on their body. Then I'm relieved I can move my own
body after a while -). Now, I think that you are perfectly able to sort out
for yourself what way of giving Reiki feels right for you. Just give
yourself to 'the Source', and be still. Just let It go, and go with the
Flow. Listen, feel and enjoy. The answer will soon flood into your mind.
the major energy flows of the body (re: Acupressure, Qi Gong and related
subjects). Also, as Reiki energy is self-guided, it sometimes may get
"stuck" working on a particular area of our body; ie during a healing
session it may want to work really deeply on a body part. So during a
hands-on Self Treatment, we use the various hand positions to "guide" the
Reiki and move it along to other parts of the body. Expanding on that, my
personal experiences have been that at level 2, Reiki becomes more intuitive
and I can often use intent alone, (no symbols, no touch) to bathe myself
with Reiki. I often do that when I'm in bed at night, just spread myself out
on the bed and let Reiki energy gush down from the heavens... last night I
had a clear vision of a brilliant white waterfall with gold sparkles
cascading down, refreshing, rejuvenating and healing. When I do that, Reiki
tends to go simultaneously to all areas of my body that needs to be healed,
whether I'm aware of them or not. The healing is often deeper. My personal
opinion on that is: by taking away the focus of Reiki coming from our hands,
we free the energy to "do its thing" (Or maybe its just me cause I'm a bit
of a control freak). Comments?
positions? The way I look at the flow of Energy is similar to taking a
drug. A drug taken orally, will eventually break down in the stomach and be
absorbed to where the body needs it most (take Panadol for example when you
have a headache, it ends up in your stomach, but 1/2 hour later your
headache starts to ease.) But inject it into your vein and you will have
instant results! To me Reiki is similar, by doing a sitting treatment on
the recipients Shoulders, the Reiki will eventually flow to where it is
needed most, but by using the Positions - or treating the areas that need it
most "directly", is like an injection into the vein, but we are injecting
Reiki directly to where it is needed most!
possible to fill an ice cube tray by pouring water into only one
compartment. Eventually the whole tray will fill up. But it is faster and
more efficient to run the tray back and forth under your tap and get all of
the compartments filled that way. While an obviously imperfect analogy,
this is somewhat how I see it with Reiki: if we are only able to reach a
certain area on a person, Reiki will find its way to where it is needed.
But it is more efficient if we use various hand placements. The "standard"
hand placements cover the central nervous system, as well as the heart and
lungs which supply the cardiopulmonary systems. That's a fairly good way to
direct the energy making it easiest to get where it needs to go. And many,
if not most, of us have the experience of being intuitively led to other
hand positions, which I interpret as being the most efficient place for
energy to be directed for that
person/animal/plant/whatever at that time.
the Reiki Intelligence knows where to go. A friend of a friend lived in
California and would get her Reiki Treatments from a RMT there. This RMT
used only the first hand position (palms over eyes) for a 45 minute session
on ALL his clients. The friend said to have had very powerful reactions and
releases to these treatments. When she moved from California to Wisconsin,
and received her first treatment from my friend, who is a Reiki One, she was
very surprised to learn there are other hand positions involved. But, after
a full treatment, with all the hand positions, she said she felt pretty much
the same relaxation and calm that she did from the RMT with only one hand
position. This lady has since been attuned to Reiki One by her RMT in
California. I do not know if she was instructed to use all the hand
positions or just the first. I am very glad you asked this question, and I
look forward to hearing all the answers!
regularly sending your newsletter, both my wife and
myself are enjoying it very much. I have a couple of experiences and a
related question to ask. A few years ago a friend of us was at the deathbed
of her mother. She was giving Reiki to her mother, who suddenly opened her
eyes and told her daughter to quit doing that. She closed her eyes again and
passed on a while later. Last March we had a phonecall from the local
hospital that a friend of ours had a stroke again and it looked like it was
close to the end. So we went over there and it looked indeed that it could
not last much longer, his breathing was irregular and he was in a coma.
Both my wife and myself gave him Reiki to help him leave this live. We left
him like that, but when we came back next day he was awake and alert again.
He is still with us in a full care home, but can not do very much anymore.
He recognizes us but does not remember our names. We do not know what Reiki
will do, but it decides what is the best course. However considering the
experiences we have had , should one be careful about giving Reiki at a
deathbed?
