~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT
Discussion column this week - whether or not to for Reiki - is one I always
get asked. There's a lot of propaganda out there that will tell you you're
bad if you charge; or the reverse, you're bad if you don't charge. There's
been so much in-fighting in the Reiki world that this has become one of
those topics you don't discuss in 'polite company' - like religion or
politics. 'Course, that's never stopped me, so here goes: :o]
going, so to speak. Sometimes it's hard for us to place value on the things
we do. Sometimes we think what we're doing (Reiki or whatever) isn't 'good
enough' or worthy of recognition. I can tell you that if you're coming from
this place, then ego is in the way. And we all know what a booger ego can
be - it likes to kick us when we're down so if we're already feeling unsure
about an aspect of ourselves or our practice, ego will be happy to reinforce
the belief for you.
are not your ego. Ego is a mask that hides who you really are so the real
you won't get hurt out here in the world (or at home with your family or at
school or wherever). You are beautiful just as you are. You are perfect
just as you are. You are worthy of recognition for the efforts you put out
to the Universe. And charging a fee for Reiki, to maintain the balance of
the energy flow, is absolutely acceptable.
still there about charging, then accept something in payment that you can
feel good about. Most folks, when they're given something, like to give
back in return. If you've given Reiki, I can almost guarantee your client
will want to do something nice for you. I tell the folks who come to me
what the cost is for a session, but then add 'or whatever you're comfortable
with.' This opens the door to all kinds of wonderful and unplanned
possibilities - like flowers, or lunch with a friend, or a new book. It's
not about the cash. It's never about the cash. It's about the energy
exchange. And it's about what brings you to a place of comfort where you
can stand in your personal place of power.

Reconnection people making the claims about DNA - the Indigo Children and
all that. I'm not putting it down, I'm not supporting it. If the changes
are going on, it is provable if anyone wishes to do so. It think it is
a terrible shame that there is so little recognition and communication
between allopathic medicine and 'everything else', but I don't see that gap
going away any time soon - in the United States,
anyway. Obviously things are different in the U.K., but the results seem to
be negative. In Canada, there is an effort afoot at government regulation.

i've been getting told reiki is being shown (by western science) to change
the dna of the practitioners." +++++++ In Amplified Prayer Therapy's APT
Intensive, we include the following information: When Jesus taught us to
love our neighbors, He was giving us one of the secrets of good health! What
we just heard was that certain diseases can afflict us when our frequency
goes down. Let's look at emotions! The quality of emotion we hold in our
body may in part determine the quality of our DNA that allows us to
experience life, and the quality of our immune system. Rhyne, Atkinson &
McRae in their study, Physiological and Psychological Effects of Compassion
and Anger (Summer 1995 Journal of Advancement in Medicine) saw that anger
depressed the production of the immune parameter we call S-IGA for 5 hours,
thus weakening the immune system. An emotion has a vibration associated
with it that creates pressure within the cells of our body. The cells are
bathed in a fluid medium, saline solution. In 1947, Dr. Hans Jenny
discovered that for every vibration we experience, there is a form that is
produced < consistently and repeatedly. This form serves as a template to
create pressure on the cells. Pressure on the DNA molecule now appears to be
a switch that determines where switch is turned off and turned on. Positive,
high frequency emotions produce many complex patterns < these wave forms
create many points of pressure on the cells. Negative, low frequency,
emotions produce simple patterns < few points of pressure on the cells. It
appears our genetic code is a variable matrixes so the choices we make,
individually, on a daily basis, moment by moment, may affect our genetic
options. Negative emotions produce low frequency responses. Compassion,
forgiveness, and love produce high frequency responses. The more we
experience high frequency emotions, the more we experience better health.
The more we love our neighbor and ourselves, the more we forgive our
neighbor and ourselves, the more compassion we have for our neighbor and
ourselves, the more resistance to disease we create. That is why we stress
INTENTION. In APT, we propose that through intention consciously choosing to
love will enhance your health as well as your relationships. (FYI -

mother-in-law reacted to a reiki session with her shoulders jumping quite
forcibly. I have experienced similar happenings with my father who suffers
arthritis in his spine and hands. However, I have also noticed a build up
of energy in my body just before my dad's body shakes in his shoulders, arms
and feet. I last did a hands on reiki session with him 3 days ago and felt
surges of energy (like being so physically excited you want to burst) just
before his body shook in different places. He does not notice the shakes
but always comments of a warmth spreading through these parts and his
arthritis easing. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

downloaded your second degree manual and have only had a chance to glance at

information. Basic info on the symbols, etc, simply didn't speak to my soul.

is my question: Recently, I heard a Catholic priest on the radio say that
charging money for healing work was "dark" energy, but that accepting
donations was alright. I am a third degree Reiki person, and when I was
first learning about Reiki, I felt funny about the notion of charging people
for healing work. When I asked my teacher about it, she said the charge was
for the time involved--not the healing work itself. And that people looking
to receive healing would benefit more if they gave something in exchange.
That doesn't necessarily have to be money. And I remember reading that Usui
charged money for teaching Reiki because when he offered it for free to
street people, they didn't respect the energy. I am wondering if other Reiki
practitioners think that charging money for healing comes from "dark"
intentions, and if we should do our healing work on a donations basis?
debate/objection that comes up for me, especially here in the "bible belt"
where many people preach the "money is evil". In times past, the community
supported its shaman/healer/priest and so the individual had no concern
about earning a living and could devote all his or her time to healing.
This sort of exchange doesn't exist in our modern society except in small
pockets. Face it, money is simply a form of exchange that is easier to
carry around than a chicken or a bag of turnips. I can trade my time for
food/clothing/etc. or I can trade it for money which I then use at a store
to trade for the same goods. So why should I be worried that it is ok to
charge to prepare a tax return/wait tables/for traditional medical services
by an MD and not ok to charge to spend an equal amount of my time in a Reiki
treatment? I still have to eat, and I have never turned away a person in
need because of a lack of money. I do ask them to at least pass on a favor
or an act of kindness to someone else. As far as asking for "donations"
instead of "fees" I simply don't see the that there is a difference. Maybe
we just need to figure out what our relationship is to money and why it
seems to be such a stumbling block.
healings & its' dark nature." As a RMT and certified spiritual
counselor, I set up a private office in my local community in order to
offer assistance. I, too, experienced turmoil in deciding whether or not I
should charge individuals for Reiki healings and counseling sessions. After
contemplating the situation with an open heart, I realized that in order to
reach humanity, I needed to advertise and pay rent! Still, if anyone
walks into the office in need of healing or counseling and cannot afford to
pay, I would gladly extend any assistance I can for free. I am sure I speak
for many RMTs when I say this. Judy, realize that individuals who make
comments of "ill" nature regarding healings and the charging of money are
merely expressing their projection of the situation. And, although I do not
wish to pass judgment, my observation regarding the practice of many priests
is that unless parishioners are able to pay for services such as: mass
offerings, baptisms and funeral prayers, the priests will not perform the
deeds! Recently, I heard of a situation where a family had requested a
priest to conduct a prayer
service at a wake and upon arriving, the priest requested his fee. The
family had forgotten to bring the money and the priest refused to render the
prayer service! The moral of the story is just that: morality and
inner-truth. If a RMT feels "right" about charging money for healings, then
by all means, he/she should honor his desire without being swayed by the
judgments of others. Likewise, if you are ever confronted with the request
to offer a free healing, remember that the life-force of REIKI--love, is
unlimited and undefined by monetary value.
other degrees/diplomas in alternative therapies on the notion that I could
go into business for myself! I have always been able to do the groundwork
for this, but then nothing happens - and always without capital to keep a
'business' going I have had to rethink my 'calling'! I now feel great
comfort in offering my services (for whatever remedy) for a donation, as not
everyone can afford these therapies - and what might be worth $5 to one
person, could be worth $30 to the next. I believe in Karma (I've seen the
repercussions in both good and bad situations) and as they always say "what
goes round - comes round". I know I will never be rich in money terms, but
what I have learnt from others more than makes up for it! PS: It actually
feels nice to be able to give something without having to ask for something
in return!
and went by donations only. People actually felt bad about that arrangement.
They weren't sure if they gave too much or too little. It was very
uncomfortable for them. Then, I had someone actually call me and ask that
if I was a Christian, how dare I take any money at all for healing that
comes from God? Well, I said, "God's healing is always free for the asking,
but if someone prefers to come to me to help facilitate that process, then
who will pay for the rent? the insurance? the Ceu's? the cost and upkeep of
a table and sheets, etc.? Well,
of course, there was silence. How can I teach someone the value of the gift
or of gratitude? In my own years of practice I can honestly say, that when
clients paid for Energy work or bartered for the service, that they
appreciated and valued the gift all that more. Usui learned that lesson, and
so did I. Then I discovered the energy of money and my own blocks and belief
systems to that (being raised a Catholic, I do understand that "dirty" talk
about money). There is nothing more beautiful than an energy exchange. And
money is energy. It is all what we do with it that makes it a positive or
negative experience. Enjoy the exchange, feel good about the exchange.
Remember the value and intention in the exchange itself.

A Simple Way with Symbols
© Taggart King August 2002
complicated way that we have ended up using the Reiki symbols in my article
'Simplicity and Sandwiches' which was published in our February 2002
Newsletter and which can be found on our web site. The way that most of us
now use symbols is a world away from the simple approach that Usui used. So
how can we work with symbols in a way that echoes more the way that Usui
taught his students?
the last few years of his life. The vast majority of his students were
taught in a very different way. Most of his students were given meditations
to use so that they could, over a long period of time, become more and more
familiar with the three energies taught at second-degree level, for example.
Once they were thoroughly familiar with the energies, once they had *become*
the energies again and again, then they were given a shortcut - a trigger -
to connect them to those energies. The triggers that they used were ancient
Shinto mantras called kotodama, or jumon, not symbols.
symbol) to connect us to an energy that we are not familiar with, and with
which we may never become familiar, depending on how we have been taught to
use the symbols. Usui had his students become the three energies again and
again and again, and when they were ingrained, when they were innate, only
then would you be given a way of connecting to the energies that were
already within you.
seen as some sort of 'Power' energy, in the way that the first symbol is
seen as the 'Power' symbol in the West. The first energy was simply earth
energy, energy of the physical body, a physical healing energy. The second
energy was seen as heavenly energy and the third energy was said to produce
'oneness'. Usui's students learned to get to grips with these energies
through meditation, so how can we learn to experience earth energy and
celestial energy? Well we can do this by using the symbols.
and your hands resting in your lap palms uppermost. In your mind's eye,
visualise the first symbol up in the air above you, and say its name
silently to yourself three times. Now imagine that cascades of energy are
flooding down onto you from that symbol, cascading into your head, your
torso, your hands; endless cascades of energy or light keep on flooding into
your body. Do this for several minutes. How does that feel? What impressions
do you get of the energy? Where was your attention focused? What were your
thoughts?
the air above you, saying its name three times, and drawing down endless
cascades of energy into your body. How does this feel by comparison? What
impressions do you get of the second energy? Where is your attention
focused? What is going on in your head?
person sits comfortably in a chair and the other stands behind. The person
standing up is going to send energy from the first or second symbol in quite
an intense way. What they do is this: 'charge' your hands with the energy of
the first symbol, say, by drawing the symbol over your palm, saying the name
three times, and press your hands together to 'transfer the effect across'
to he other hand. Now in your mind's eye draw out the first symbol up in the
air above you and say the name three times. Move your hands so that they are
hovering alongside the recipient's temples, and imagine that you are drawing
down cascades of energy from the symbol above you, which flood into your
crown, through your arms and out of your hands into the recipient. Keep on
visualising. How does the energy feel as it comes through your hands? What
impressions do you get in your body? How does it feel for the recipient?
What adjectives can they use to describe the essence of the energy that they
have received?

students, I can generalise about the sort of impression that most people
tend to get from the two symbols, the two energies. Maybe you will notice
some, though not all, of these experiences.

clouds or marshmallows, cool, blue, expansive, exhilarating, and uplifting.
heavenly energy, and these are two energies that you have available to you
when treating others. These energies are the essence of Usui's system at
second-degree level. The first energy focuses on the physical body, and the
second focuses on thoughts and emotions. They are so different, so
distinctive. Try using them on their own, just one energy, just one focus,
without mixing symbols together. Keep things simple and uncluttered by
focusing like a laser beam on one thing at a time, and see what happens. And
with time, and with familiarity with the two energies, try producing those
energies directly, using intent, and see what happens.

~~Just for Fun~~~
Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound"
that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of
course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.
Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of
the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off
when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One
student, however, wrote the following:
to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are
leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell,
it will not leave.
"Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell,
let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most
of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you
will go to Hell. Since there is more ! than one of these religions and
since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that
all souls go to Hell.
in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of
the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the
temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to
expand proportionately as souls are added.
1) If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell
breaks loose.
2) If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell,
then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
Freshman year, "...that it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with
you", and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in
having an affair with her, then #2 above cannot be true, and thus I am sure
that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze over."
