~~Reflection~~ Teri Moore, editor & RMT

This week, I share this column with Taggart King . . . .

Symbols and Beyond
©Taggart King August 2000 www.reiki-evolution.co.uk

In the Western style of Reiki, the Reiki symbols are seen to be very
important. They are seen as an integral part of the system; indeed for many
people the symbols are Reiki, the symbols are the energy. However new
information coming from Japan, and the experiences of some Reiki people,
suggest that they might not be as necessary as was once thought.

Firstly, it is interesting to note that the 'attunement' methods used by
Mikao Usui's Reiki Association in Japan (the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai) do not
involve the use of symbols: the Gakkai's students are connected to Reiki,
but the Reiki symbols are not used in this process.

Secondly, Hiroshi Doi - a member of the 'Gakkai who has brought their basic
teachings to the Western world - says that Mikao Usui introduced the symbols
into his Reiki technique for the benefit of his students. The story was that
some students could just not accept that they could 'do this thing', and by
giving them something concrete to use, they learned to focus and control the
energy more easily.

Hiroshi Doi also says that the current 'Gakkai students do not use the Reiki
symbols, though they are shown them out of historical interest. Mikao Usui
no doubt chose the symbols very carefully, to represent different aspects of
the energy, but the energy and the connection to the energy came first it
seems.

So perhaps the message we should be getting from the above is that we may
choose to use the symbols if we want to or need to use them, but they are
not necessarily an essential part of the system, and if we feel that we can
move beyond them, that is ok, and that is still Reiki.

I have been in contact with a Moldovan Doctor (and Reiki Master) whose Reiki
friends use Christian symbols to control and focus the Reiki energy; I also
know a Muslim Reiki Master who uses Muslim prayers to do the same thing.
From personal experience I can say that it is possible to produce the
desired effect with the energy through intent only, whether that be distant
healing or gearing the energy in the direction of mental/emotional balancing
or physical healing.

For me there is a distinction to be made between the energy of Reiki, and
any symbols that might be used to control and focus the energy in a
particular way. Reiki is the energy, you are attuned to the energy, but
there are many ways of directing the energy, by using symbols from Japan,
from other cultures and through simple intent.

~~Reiki Experience~~

in response to Jenni's experience, Judy writes: I am Reiki III, and have
noticed that when I don't do self-Reiki on a regular basis--then I have more
of a tendency to get whatever bugs are going around. If I do self-Reiki
regularly, my immunity seems to be stronger. I don't have a regular
practice, and so I do Reiki on others when the opportunity arises with
friends and family.

And Rosemary adds: I am a 4th level RMT and I do feel it is important to
use the reiki when I am called to do so. If I haven't used it awhile, my
hands will tingle or heat near a depleted person. This will often happen near
children experiencing sad or upset emotions. I am also a first grade
teacher; I will place a hand just below the neck of a child and speak very
quietly This is very calming and helps an angry or emotional child. I used
this technique with an abused foster child with much success. I do find
that I am more sensitive to loud adults and am more sensitive to negative
comments I hear others make. I am clairsentient and can feel energies in a
room (not always a good thing) I send light out to ease a negative situation
whenever I can. I have started to teach Reiki, due to people insisting that
I was the person they trusted to attune them. I really didn't feel ready to
do so, but it was a clear sign from the universe that the time was ripe.
Sooo, I really enjoy teaching it as well.

~~Up for Discussion~~

This column features a different question each week for your musing,
opinion, and response. Comments received will be published in the next
issue.

Last week's question came Velma: I have a question. Mostly a curious
thought rather than anything important. The other day I gave blood. I am
only a level one practitioner, and practice mostly on myself. I'm
wondering...because my blood was still in me, could I have given reiki to my
blood and it would have been received by the people/person who received it,
or would that be something I would only be able to do once I achieve Reiki
II?

Linda: That was a very interesting question you asked about sending Reiki
in your blood, and, I might add, something I had never thought of doing!
Thank you for the great insight!! I believe that intent is everything, and
if you intend for the Reiki energy to be in your blood so that, not only
will your blood be for someone's good, but the Reiki flowing in it will also
aid in the recipient's healing process, then SO BE IT! God Bless You!

Myrya: Interesting thoughts, Velma :) It isn't rare for people to "charge"
gifts, money, clothing, boxes, etc. Never underestimate your Reiki, due to
the level received... (how I have been taught) for it is not really the
level or the highness achieved, but the intention and goodness of the Reiki.
I believe that anyone who has Reiki and has made it part of their life, most
definitely will have it running through them, their blood, their heart,
their soul. Reiki becomes a part of us and touches everyone we meet on our
journeys of life!!!

Rhonda: You bet you can "charge" your blood!! Anyone who needs extra blood
from a donor has a need for it and what better way to help them out than
with your own healing energy infused into your life-giving blood. Reiki can
go into anything, art, cooking, anything. Has anyone ever passed a hospital
and thought of all those sick people there that would benefit from Reiki?
There is no way to give healing to all those inside but why not a blanket
energy request for the building an all those inside. From the surgeons to
the folks in the janitorial and the morgue.

Next week's question comes from Kamal: This experience is concerning
attuning children. I have attuned about 12 children aged 4 - 12 years, about
10 children aged 12 -14 years and lots of older children and adults. I have
found that the younger the attunee, the easier it is to attune. The symbols
literally glide / slip into their auras and chakra probably because their
channels are not blocked! It is a joy to attune the little ones! Also the
more issues the attunee has to clear, the harder it is to attune. I wonder
if others have had similar experiences?

~~Just for Fun~~~

A little boy was in a relative's wedding. As he was coming down the aisle he
would take two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd alternating between the
bride's side and the groom's side. While facing the crowd, he would put his
hands up like claws and roar...so it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step,
ROAR, all the way down the aisle.

As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from laughing so hard by the
time he reached the pulpit. The little boy, however, was getting more and
more distressed from all the laughing, and was also near tears by the time
he reached the pulpit.

When asked what he was doing, the child sniffed and said, "I was being the
Ring Bear!"
